On Sunday OpenAI’s chief executive said he agreed, would do the same, and would not take the company public this year. xAI’s owner replied “Dario is right.” We took the underlying story apart in Google and RSI — The Loop Nobody Has Closed and the evergreen entry Recursive Self-Improvement; this Pulse is about what the market did with it on Monday morning.

It sold the suppliers of compute, and it sold them in a particular order. The Kospi closed down 3.3% at 6,684 with SK Hynix −6.7% and Samsung −4.0%; SoftBank, OpenAI’s largest outside backer, fell 11.3% in Tokyo, its largest one-day drop since June; Kioxia fell 6.4%, Resonac 6.1%, SUMCO 3.6%. The Nikkei lost only 0.8%, Taiwan 0.7% with TSMC −1.2%, and the Hang Seng rose. Europe is lower at midday — the Euro Stoxx 50 −1.1%, the DAX −0.5%, the CAC −0.8%, the FTSE +0.5% — and the US pre-market has the Nasdaq-100 tracker at $703.64, down 1.6%, the S&P 500 tracker at $759.49, down 0.6%, and the Dow tracker down 0.3%.

The other two prices behind last week did not help: Brent is $108.33, up 3.6% and above Thursday’s $107.63 settlement, the high of the current run; the yen is 154.6 per dollar; gold is down 1.8%.

Verdict: the first door was touched and not opened; chips led software for a second week, but the bid went to power and construction, not to the tools. Both questions stay open into the Fed.

Last Sunday asked whether September ends the Rubin consolidation, and named the doors: 2,017 (the 50-day average), 2,155 (the range top), then the record. The Rubin Build-Out 100 closed Friday at 1,963.98, +1.0% on the week. It rose four sessions running to 1,986.30 on Wednesday, touched the 50-day — which has itself drifted down to 1,989 as August’s high closes rolled out of the window — and was sold 2.0% on Thursday. Friday recovered 0.9%. The 20-day average at 1,957 is reclaimed; the 50-day is not. The September 2 low at 1,877 was never in play, so the rising-lows argument stands, and the first door is still shut.

The second question — was Friday’s chip bid the catalyst or the reflex — got the answer at the index level and not at the sector level. Through a week of software prints and inflation data, chips led software again: the semiconductor fund +1.4%, the software fund −2.9%, the Nasdaq 100 fund −0.6% at 714.88, still inside its 701 / 746 frame. But inside Rubin the week belonged to data-centre construction (+6.7%) and data-centre power (+6.5%), foundry and integration (+5.2%) and the server assemblers (+3.9%). The equipment layer that the diary said must turn on kept falling: lithography −3.7%, storage −3.5%, photomasks −3.2%, wafer processing −3.1%. Half a catalyst. Oracle’s window is open — 153.83 on Friday against a 152.94 entry, paid above 157.53, sold below 148.35 — and closes at Tuesday’s close, with Adobe (252.23 against 248.83) beside it.

1 · The signal — cybersecurity into the frontier-model year

Ten cybersecurity names have been sold on the screen for two weeks and bought underneath it for a month. That divergence is this week’s subject.

The case for the sector is not a Closelook thesis; it is the companies’ own. Over the summer the frontier labs began publishing what their newest models can do to software — OpenAI wrote in August about putting its cyber-capable models “in more trusted hands”, and CrowdStrike announced with Nvidia a pair of models built for offence and defence. The argument, as the vendors make it, is that the time between a vulnerability being disclosed and being exploited at machine speed is collapsing, so defence has to move from human-led detection to automated response. Nvidia’s chief executive said in an interview reported on Thursday that cybersecurity is the AI industry’s next large market. The same models also widen the attack surface: every deployed agent and every tool server is a new door.

The diary does not score narratives; it scores what the tape did with them. On the year the narrative has been paid: Fortinet +96%, Okta +93%, Palo Alto +80%, CrowdStrike +76%, Datadog +63%, Cloudflare +56%, and the two funds +32% (CIBR) and +41% (WCBR), against the software fund at −4%. On the month it has been sold: nine of twelve instruments are down, Palo Alto by 14%, SentinelOne by 12%, Rubrik and Datadog by 10%. Eight of the twelve now sit ten percent or more below their 52-week highs, and most of those highs are dated August 13 to August 31 — five weeks ago.

What makes this a signal rather than a drawdown is the second reading, in section 4. The flow scan of Saturday has every one of the ten names “getting stronger” or “turning up” over twenty-one sessions, with the largest gains in exactly the names the price has punished most: Zscaler +37 points, Rubrik +34, Okta +26, SentinelOne +23, Palo Alto +22. Money has been moving into these names while their prices fell. The diary has a name for that configuration — flow building while price is sold — and a rule: it resolves within a few weeks, one way or the other, and the level that says which is in section 7.

2 · The three groups, name by name

Endpoint. Cloud and zero trust. Identity, observability and resilience. The digest divides the sector three ways, and the tape treats the three groups differently.

Endpoint and platform. CrowdStrike (206.74, −3.0% on the week, −10.5% off its August 31 record at 231) is the name whose print was paid — +22.1% in the three-session window after August 26, the widest window on its card — and which has since given back everything but the first day. It closed Friday 2% above its 50-day average. Palo Alto Networks (330.65, −0.8%, −16.5% off the August 13 high at 396) is 5% under its 50-day after selling a seventh consecutive double beat. SentinelOne (19.75, −0.7%, −17% off its high) is the small one of the three, +32% on the year and −12% on the month.

Cloud and zero trust. Cloudflare (306.53) was the week’s exception: +9.9%, back within 7% of its August 13 record at 330.83, 7.5% above its 50-day. Zscaler (164.54, −3.1%) is the outlier in the other direction — −27% on the year, −51% from a November 2025 high at 336.27, the only name in the set with a negative flow score (−52) and the largest 21-day improvement in it (+37). Fortinet (156.07, −0.1%) is the year’s best performer at +96% and one of the flattest weeks, 2% under its 50-day, 10% off its August 27 high.

Identity, observability, resilience. Okta (166.50, −2.4%) is the strongest chart in the sector: +93% on the year, +11% on the month, 4% off its August 31 record and 12% above its 50-day. Datadog (221.21, +3.9%) is the one still carrying the August verdict — 23% below its August 4 high after the beat-and-raise that was sold 19% on day one. Rubrik (86.65, −7.5%) was the week’s weakest, closing below its 50-day for the first time since the print, 19% off its August 27 high. IBM (243.29, +3.6%), named in the digest for its models partnership, is −18% on the year and −26% off its June high; the flow scan does not cover it.

3 · The Print Record — six clean quarters, one payment

The season’s scorecard for the group: six double beats, one paid. CrowdStrike’s +22.1% (from a 189.18 anchor; Thursday alone +20.5% to 227.96) is the exception that makes the rule visible. Palo Alto beat on both lines for the seventh quarter running — EPS $1.02 against $0.978, revenue $3.41 billion against $3.35 billion — and sold −8.0%, the third window in a row between −8% and −9%. Zscaler beat by 9% on EPS, grew revenue 25% to $898 million, raised the year, and sold −6.6%: the fifth unpaid window on a card that has beaten every estimate for eleven quarters.

Rubrik’s was the loudest: the largest EPS beat on its card ($0.20 against $0.039) answered with −17.4%, the second-deepest window in its history, on a record that has never once closed inside the ±3% band. Datadog’s beat-and-raise on August 6 was sold 19% on day one, four times its worst three-day reaction in the covered record, and the stock has not recovered it. Cloudflare’s double beat the same week was bought 5.6% on day one, touched a record intraday, and faded.

Read as a group, the record says the market audited the sector’s multiples in August, not its quarters. The quarters were fine. The entries were the problem — Palo Alto went in 12.6% up in three sessions, Rubrik and CrowdStrike went in after a 5% sector selloff, Datadog went in 0.6% off its high. That is the same shape the diary described in the software complex a month ago: perfect columns, unpaid windows. The next prints for the cohort are November (Palo Alto, Zscaler) and December (CrowdStrike, Rubrik). Between now and then the tape has no quarterly excuse.

4 · Directional Flow — ten rising scores, seven falling prices

The flow score is the diary’s measure of the direction and force of money moving through a name. It is not a price momentum reading; a name can fall on the screen while its score rises, and that is what the sector has done for a month. Over twenty-one sessions every name in the group improved: Zscaler +37.0, Rubrik +34.3, Okta +26.0, SentinelOne +22.7, Palo Alto +21.8, CrowdStrike +18.6, Cloudflare +17.3, Fortinet +8.7, Datadog +4.8. Over the last five sessions nine of ten still rose; Datadog was the only one to slip, and only by 0.7.

The levels of the scores matter as much as their direction. Fortinet (116), Palo Alto (112), Datadog (100), CrowdStrike (98) and Okta (97) are all at or near the +100 line the scanner treats as “strong” — these are names with money already behind them. Cloudflare (61), Rubrik (51), SentinelOne (49) and the CIBR fund itself (51) sit in the middle, building. Zscaler at −52 is the one still draining, and it is the one improving fastest: “turning up” is the scanner’s word for a score that was falling and has reversed.

Set the two columns beside each other and the picture is unusual for this year. In the spring the sector’s flow and price rose together. In August they parted: the price went down on the prints and the macro, the flow kept coming. The diary’s record with this configuration — flow building while price is sold two weeks running — is that it does not persist for long. Either the price catches up to the money, or the money stops. Section 7 names the level for each.

5 · The two funds against software and the index

One year on, the two cybersecurity funds are +25% each, the Nasdaq 100 fund +22%, the software fund −10%. The whole gap to software was built between April and August: from the April 10 low CIBR ran 68% to its August 13 high at 102.20 while IGV rose 48% into late August and has since given a quarter of that back. The last two weeks are the first sustained stretch since April in which the cyber funds have lagged the index on a one-month view — CIBR −5.5% and WCBR −6.9% against the Nasdaq 100 fund’s −0.5% — and the first in which they have fallen with software rather than against it.

CIBR closed Friday at 94.40, 0.1% above its 50-day average; it has hugged that line within half a percent for four straight sessions, a hair under it on Monday and Wednesday, a hair over on Tuesday and Friday. WCBR, the smaller and more concentrated fund, closed at 39.12, 0.5% below its own. That is the chart-level version of section 4: the price has come down exactly to the line where a rising-flow name either holds or does not. Above it the funds keep the year’s leadership over software; below it the sector rejoins the software drawdown it had escaped since April.

6 · Inside the Agentic Ecosystem — the security and identity sleeves

The Agentic Ecosystem index, the AI software supply chain, carries the sector in two sub-indices, and both lost ground last week. The Agentic Security sleeve — CrowdStrike, Palo Alto, Fortinet, SentinelOne, Rubrik, Zscaler, Trend Micro and Sangfor, equal weight — closed at 1,350.55: −3.1% on the week, −9.3% on the month, +38.1% on the year. Only Trend Micro (+1.6%) rose; Zscaler (−7.5%) and Rubrik (−6.0%) led it down. The Identity, Trust & Governance sleeve — Okta and SailPoint — was the weakest multi-name sub-index in the whole index at −6.8% (only the one-name Foundation Models sleeve fell more), SailPoint −11.1% and Okta −2.3%, though it remains +1.7% on the month and +40.0% on the year.

Operations & Observability, where Datadog sits with JFrog and Dynatrace, held better: −1.5% on the week, −0.8% on the month, +51.1% on the year. The Govern & Secure layer, which groups the security and identity sleeves, closed −2.8% on the week and −7.8% on the month at +42.0% for 2026 — still ahead of the Agentic Ecosystem headline at +55.3% only in the sense that it fell less in the summer. The parent index lost 1.2% on the week and 9.1% on the month.

Two more house readings belong here. The Agentic Security demand pulse — the diary’s attempt to read security spending from the vendors’ own disclosures rather than from price — sits at 39 of 100 with a “not enough data” regime flag, its endpoint basket −9.1% over twenty-one sessions (CrowdStrike −6.8%, SentinelOne −11.4%); the pulse has not confirmed anything the narrative says. The Enterprise Workflow pulse, by contrast, reads 82, carried by Salesforce’s disclosed agent revenue. And the AI Handoff ratio for trust-versus-execution — the diary’s price ratio of the governance layer against the execution layer — slipped 1.8% on the week to 1.017, still +1.7% since its June 30 base. The tape has not decided that security is where the agent economy pays; it has decided, for now, that workflow is.

The group level is the one to score. CIBR at 94.40 has the August 28 close at 98.56 four percent overhead; that was the last close before the two-week selloff, and a close above it says the money in section 4 has reached the price. The September 2 low at 93.54 is one percent below; a close under it says the flow was late and the sector is rejoining software. The individual levels follow the same logic — the pre-selloff close above, the post-print low below — and Rubrik is already at its line.

8 · The board and the questions ahead

Of the five Closelook indices, Rubin was again the only one that rose last week, for a second week running. Non-AI growth (HALO) is now flat on the year, the AI software users (Agentic Winners 40) −7%, and Europe’s AI names lost 4.4%. The only thing the market bought for two weeks running was the physical build-out — and inside it, power and construction rather than tools.

First question: does the flow reach the price, or does the price stop the flow? The scoring level is CIBR — 98.56 above, 93.54 below — with the seven single-name lines in section 7. The tape has a full week without a print in the group to answer, and the Fed on Wednesday to complicate it. If the cyber funds hold their 50-day through the Fed and the record-high names (Okta, Cloudflare) lead, the divergence resolves upward and the sector keeps its year. If Rubrik’s Friday close under its 50-day is the first of several, the flow was late.

Second question: does the Fed open Rubin’s first door? The doors have not moved: 1,989 (the 50-day, drifting lower each week the index stays under it), 2,155 (the range top), the record above. Below, 1,877 remains the line that must hold. Tuesday closes Oracle’s and Adobe’s windows and brings Taiwan’s August revenues; Wednesday is the decision, with a hike priced at roughly four chances in five; Thursday and Friday the Bank of Japan; Friday the quarterly expiry. A close above 1,989 on the decision day, with the equipment layer finally positive on the sector board, is what an opened door looks like. A close under 1,877 is what the October window looks like instead.

9 · The count

Nothing resolved. The Nasdaq 100 fund closed at 714.88, inside its 701 / 746 frame and just above its 50-day at 710.41; the potential third-of-a-third remains possible, not resolved. The S&P 500 fund lost 0.8% to 764.29, 1.7% under its August 13 record. The Magnificent Seven fund added 0.65% to 69.89 and closed a week back above the 69.5 shelf it lost the week before — the one equity line this week that was retaken.

The bond market withheld its countersignature for an eighth week and then some: the seven-to-ten-year Treasury fund fell 1.3% to 91.01, two full points under the 93 line it failed to hold in August, and the long fund lost 1.6% to 80.87, below the 81.2 it gave up last week. Gold fell 2.0% to 398.77, back under the 410.22 line and a point above its 396.75 falsifier; bitcoin’s fund lost 3.2% to 43.77 and gave back the 44.5 line it had just reclaimed. The dollar fund was unchanged. Hold both sides: the equity lines are being retaken one at a time while the instruments that confirm regimes keep breaking theirs.

One sentence to close, because a diary should say what it actually thinks. The cybersecurity names have been sold for a month on entries and multiples while every flow reading the diary keeps has strengthened; the price has come down to the line where that either pays or fails; the sector has no print to hide behind this week and a Fed decision to trade through; if CIBR closes above 98.56 the money was early and the sector keeps its year, and if it closes under 93.54 the money was wrong and the sector is software again. 1 · This Week’s Action

Where this letter sits, in one line. Sunday’s US edition reads the market at index and sector degree; this one reads it at name altitude — which companies the money went into, which it left, and what the flow behind each is doing. The backdrop, one line more: the S&P sold four sessions into a hot inflation print and bought the print, the chips beat the market a second week from under their average, the Nasdaq 100 without its technology stocks turned negative on the year, and the Fed decides on Wednesday with a hike four-fifths priced.

The selection, first — what the tracker paid and what it charged. Across the three AI indices’ constituents, the twelve best lines of the tracker’s week are eleven build-out names and one operator: Aehr Test +24.2%, Cohu +24.1%, FormFactor +18.8%, Bloom Energy +17.1%, Coherent +15.5%, HPE +14.1%, Corning +14.0%, Nokia +13.9%, AMD +13.1%, Marvell +13.1%, DigitalOcean +12.4%, Intel +12.3%. Test equipment, power, photonics, fibre, the CPU makers — the physical layer, and inside it the parts that are not memory.

The twelve worst: Zhipu −26.2%, UiPath −24.5%, Amgen −15.0%, Kingdee −14.9%, Elastic −13.3%, PTC −12.9%, HubSpot −12.4%, Adobe −11.7%, Shopify −11.7%, Money Forward −11.5%, Delta Electronics −11.2%, SailPoint −11.1% — enterprise software in three time zones, one health-care name, one Taiwanese power-supply maker. (The tracker’s week is a five-session window; across Labor Day it reaches back to Thursday 3 September, so its name-level moves are wider than the Friday-to-Friday tape the US letter reads.)

The medians say the same thing in one row: capex +2.25% with 85 of 126 green; opex −0.30% with 14 of 34; applications −6.13% with 4 of 40. Section 2 has the same cut per index and per sleeve, on the week and on the year; section 6 has what the book did about it on Friday.

The tech shelf — silicon green, everything else red. Six green lines of twenty-one, five of them chips or the things chips plug into: XSD +2.87%, SMHX +1.18%, the grid fund +1.00%, the internet-of-things fund +0.56%, data centres +0.28%, SMH +0.27%. Fifteen red, led by nuclear −5.61%, fintech −4.74%, lithium −3.63%, ARK −3.06%, software −2.92%, the digital-asset fund −2.69%, cloud −2.37%. Second consecutive week of the inversion, and it narrowed: the semis did not rise much; they did not fall while the index did. The software-to-semis ratio fell 3.18% on the week to 37% above its June 22 low, from 41% — ten percent of the ratio’s rise surrendered in two weeks.

The factor view — both legs down, the label held. The factor-regime gauge kept “momentum leading, risk appetite building” — indexed 159.61 against a 50-day at 155.45, 94.4th percentile — on a week in which SPMO −0.94% and SPLV −1.27% both fell. For this cohort the read is the same as a week ago and matters more into a Fed decision: when the tape sold, it sold the defensive factor harder than the momentum factor. The money that left the software names did not go to low-volatility. It went to a test-equipment maker.

Our own board — the Rotation Ledger, on Friday’s closes, and the receipts. The scanner missed its Friday-night run a third week and this desk triggered it Saturday afternoon, so the tables carry Friday’s closes across 647 stocks. The shares: building flow (accelerating-up plus reversing-up) 36.5% of the universe, from 38.5%; decelerating-up 36.2%, from 34.5% — now the largest bucket outright, and still the long warning; accelerating-down 9.1%, from 8.4%; flat 18.2%.

Softer at the building end, heavier at the draining end, a second week. The receipts, both ways, because that is the contract: the fastest-risers table published here last Sunday — Atlassian, freee, Appier, e.l.f., Duolingo, Elastic, Veeva, Workday, Salesforce, ServiceNow, UiPath, Snowflake — was charged again on price: Atlassian −6.27%, ServiceNow −6.18%, Workday −5.15%, Salesforce −4.44%, Elastic −9.17%, Snowflake −2.43% after its paid window, UiPath the second-worst name in the family.

And the draining table — SanDisk, Kioxia, KLA, Applied Optoelectronics — was right this week: SanDisk −6.13%, Kioxia sold in Tokyo on Thursday, KLA −2.67%, and every one of them sat out Friday’s chip rally. Three weeks in: one lead, one lag, and one split — right on the draining side, wrong on the building side. The instrument reads a 252-day trend of flow; the software names it says are building have now been sold for two weeks by a market pricing a hike. The letter keeps the score it earns.

The strongest trends, confirmed on the medium term. Dell at 211 (+16.9 on the month), Lenovo 180 (+36.2 — the fastest-building high score on the board), HPE 143 (+18.4, the week after its paid window), Nebius 135 (flat on the month), Astera Labs 129, ams-OSRAM 125, Fortinet 116, Palo Alto 112 (+21.8), Nynomic 107, Datadog 100.

The confirmed board is the assemblers and the firewall pair, a third week running — and this week the assemblers were paid on price too: HPE +19.4% on the tape’s week, Dell +8.2%, Lenovo the book’s line in the sibling book. The exhibit of level-versus-change is unchanged and larger: Kioxia 262 and SanDisk 261 with the deepest monthly drains on the board (−66.2, −57.8), and this week the price agreed with the drain.

The same list, confirmed on the short term. Dell, Lenovo (+6.9 on five days), HPE, Fortinet, Palo Alto (+2.6), CrowdStrike 98 (+3.6, +18.6 on the month), Okta 97 (+7.0, +26.0), NetApp 94 (+3.5, +21.0 — the storage name the flow does confirm), Twilio 98.

Still the incumbent software layer and the hardware assemblers; still no chip designer and no memory name on it. What the confirmed board does not contain is the week’s best price list — Aehr, Cohu, FormFactor, Coherent — which sit on the draining side at 205, 89 and 84 with monthly changes of −14.8, −41.8 and −39.9. The test bench was paid from a drain, the same way storage was a fortnight ago.

Where new leadership shows up first — the fastest risers. SpaceX +32.4 on five days from a 23 score — a listing too new for a monthly column, and the book’s newest line — then Atlassian +17.1 (+78.4 on the month), Appier +12.4, freee +12.0, e.l.f. +10.4, Duolingo +10.4, Veeva +10.1, Elastic +9.9, Workday +9.1, Salesforce +8.9, Snowflake +8.4 (score 67), Fujikura +7.9.

Software plus consumer, a third week, one rung further along, and one rocket company. The question this table now has to answer is not whether the flow is building — it is — but whether flow that builds for three weeks while the price is sold for two is a leading indicator or a lagging one. The next scan on the far side of the Fed will say.

And the draining side. Zhipu −28.1 on five days from a 124 score (−104.2 on the month, the deepest in the universe by a distance), Applied Optoelectronics −15.4 from 177, Kioxia −14.0 from 262, SanDisk −11.9 from 261, Powell Industries −11.4, Furukawa Electric −10.8 from 179, Aixtron −10.6, Western Digital −10.0 from 159, Unimicron −9.8 from 225, GlobalFoundries −9.7.

The memory-and-optics complex, five weeks running, and this week the drain was paid in full: SanDisk the worst chip on Friday, Western Digital −4.3% on the week, the Japanese optics and materials names the worst lines in the build-out. Read against the price, the table did what it is built to do: it named the names that did not participate in the bounce.

2 · The State

The four buckets, briefly. New readers: we cut the growth trade into functional indices rather than sectors — capex (Rubin Build-Out, what gets built), opex (Agentic Ecosystem, what it costs to run), applications (Agentic Winners, what gets sold on top), and HALO as the control group carrying no AI thesis.

The week’s ladder: capex +1.04%, opex −1.17%, applications −4.71%; the control group −3.54%. On the year: capex +91.1%, opex +55.3%, applications −7.0% — from −2.4% a week ago; the control group +0.3%, one ordinary session from red. Euro-AI −2.79%. The physical layer is the only green line for a second week, and the margin widened from forty basis points to five points. The no-AI control group fell with the applications, which makes this a duration week rather than an AI week — everything priced on 2027 earnings was marked down by a five-year yield that rose 24 basis points in four sessions; the one layer priced on this year’s shipments rose. That is all this letter says about HALO this week.

Winners, the year: the megacap gateway +11.6% is the only green sleeve; enterprise −4.6%, application leaders −7.7%, control plane −9.0%, consumer −13.0%, endpoints −17.0% the worst. Read the three top to bottom: on the week, the strongest sleeve in every index is the one nearest the physical stack or nearest the consumer’s phone, the weakest is enterprise software; on the year, the strongest are memory, substrates and the model layer, the weakest are the consumer applications and the tools that were the spring’s leaders.

The best and worst stocks, per index — from the best sleeves and from the whole list. Inside Rubin: the best five are Aehr Test +24.2%, Cohu +24.1%, FormFactor +18.8% — three test-equipment names from the testing & metrology sleeve — Bloom Energy +17.1% from DC power, Coherent +15.5% from interconnects; then HPE, Corning, Nokia, AMD, Marvell, Intel, Teradyne. The worst five are Japanese and Taiwanese equipment and materials: Delta Electronics −11.2%, Nikon −9.4%, Sumco −8.4%, GlobalWafers −8.1%, Resonac −8.0%, then Toppan, Yaskawa, Canon, Cadence, Horiba, Hamamatsu, Disco. Three indices, one signature for a second week: the names that sell a physical thing or run a physical network were paid; the names that sell a seat were charged. And one detail for the flow ledger: the Ecosystem’s best five on price — DigitalOcean, Fastly, Cloudflare — are on the draining side of the flow tables, while its worst five — Elastic, SailPoint, Snowflake, Zscaler — are on the building side. The opex layer’s flow and its price have swapped places.

The floors, scored — the incumbent floor was sold, the challenger floor sat still. The incumbent floor: the names whose takeout-value argument this letter has carried — Workday −5.15%, ServiceNow −6.18%, Salesforce −4.44%, Atlassian −6.27% on the tape’s week — were sold together, with the flow still building under every one of them (Workday +45.7 on the month, Atlassian +78.4). Oracle beat every line, rose 4.3% after hours and gave it all back by Friday; Adobe beat and guided a shade under; both score Tuesday inside their bands. The floor’s argument has not changed; the market’s willingness to pay for it has, for two weeks. The challenger floor: Nebius −0.81%, CoreWeave −0.41%, IREN −1.90% on the tape, the compute-operators sub-index −1.21%, operators-against-suppliers −2.23% after +3.26%. Last week’s first green week in four did not get a second — but the operators were not sold either, in the week the five-year did what it did. Flat, in a duration week, for the most rate-sensitive sleeve of the stack, is its own kind of information.

The buckets against their highs. Applications closed 9.7% below the January record — from 5.3% a week ago; the gap doubled in four sessions — still +31% off the June 25 low. Opex sits 9.1% below its August 13 high, from 8.1%, 2.2% off its September 2 low. The build-out is 20.8% below June, from 22.0%, +15.0% off its July 29 low — and for a second week it is the only layer whose distance to its high shrank. The spring pattern — the index that bottoms first leads — has now failed for two weeks in the layer that bottomed first, and the layer that bottomed last led both.

The structural read — the count, from the US letter, as the gate. QQQ closed 714.88, 0.6% above the 50-day after one close under it on Thursday; 746.16 confirms, 694 voids, neither traded; Thursday’s 708.69 was the closest approach to the 704 shelf since the average was reclaimed. The count is unchanged — 1-2 off the April low, wave 3 ongoing — and the range is narrowing under the descending line from the mid-August high into a dated catalyst.

The house read, in Thomas’s words: the sideways movement will soon resolve into a bigger move, up or down; the catalyst may be Wednesday; October is the month that usually settles a late-summer consolidation one way or the other. For this cohort the corollary matters: if it resolves up, the first candidate to lead is the leader of the spring — the chips, already four points ahead of the market from under their average — and inside the chips, the names on this letter’s paid list, not its memory names.

3 · The AI Board — the stack, instrument by instrument

Why this section exists. The Hypergrowth letter carries the site’s AI instruments on one board — the three indices, their sectors and names, the flow behind them, the physical gauges of the build-out, demand, order flow and credit. Every panel is a house instrument, read from its own data, one paragraph each.

The three indices, year to date. Capex +91%, opex +55%, applications −7% — and the distances to the highs: the build-out 20.8% under June and closing the gap, the opex layer 9.1% under August and widening it, the applications 9.7% under January and widening it fastest.

Rubin — the sectors. Twenty of thirty-six green: DC construction +6.7%, DC power +6.5%, foundry +5.2%, AI factory systems and testing & metrology +3.9% at the top; lithography −3.7%, storage −3.5%, photomasks −3.2%, wafer processing −3.1% at the bottom. On the month HBM memory +7.4% is the only sleeve up more than three percent; wafer processing −22.0% trails everything.

Agentic Ecosystem — the sectors. Four green of fourteen — edge & distribution +4.1% the best line, runtime gateways, Europe and the substrate sleeve under a percent — and the bottom is governance and Asia: identity −6.8%, the Asian constituents −6.0%, data & memory −4.5%, with the single foundation-model name −26.3%. The opex layer bought its network edge and sold its trust layer.

Agentic Winners — the sectors. Nothing green: the megacap gateway −0.4% the best, consumer −2.8%, endpoints −4.1%, enterprise −5.4%, the application leaders −6.3%, the US constituents −7.0%, and the control plane −9.7% — the worst multi-name sleeve in the four-family system for the second week the governance thesis has been sold.

The capex list is test and power (Aehr, Cohu, FormFactor, Bloom, Coherent) against Japanese equipment and wafers (Delta Electronics, Nikon, Sumco, GlobalWafers, Resonac); the opex list is the edge (DigitalOcean, Fastly, Cloudflare, NetApp, Nebius) against enterprise data and security (Zhipu, Elastic, SailPoint, Snowflake, Zscaler); the applications list is the gateway and the consumer (Meta, AppLovin, Apple, Reddit, Oracle) against the seat-sellers (UiPath, Kingdee, PTC, HubSpot, Adobe). Three indices, one signature: the physical names and the gateways were paid, the seat-based software was charged.

Directional Flow — Rubin. 106 of 126 members are losing force — the largest decelerating-up cohort of any index for a second week — and the storage and optics names lead the draining side (Kioxia −66, SanDisk −58, Applied Optoelectronics −57 on the month) in the week their prices finally followed the flow down. Lenovo, HPE and Dell lead the building side: the assemblers, and this week they were paid.

Directional Flow — Agentic Ecosystem. 18 of 34 members are getting stronger and five more are turning up — the broadest building cohort on the board by share — and the names building are the names charged this week: Elastic (+47 on the month), Snowflake, Zscaler, Rubrik, SailPoint. The names paid this week — DigitalOcean, Fastly — are draining. The layer’s flow and its price disagree in both directions.

Directional Flow — Agentic Winners. 36 of 40 members are building — 24 turning up, 12 getting stronger — with Atlassian (+78 on the month), freee, Appier, Duolingo and Workday the fastest, all from low or negative scores, and all sold on price for a second week. The draining side is two names: AppLovin and Alphabet.

The Handoff Board. Ten ratios between the layers: the applications gave back against everything — use-against-build −5.7%, beyond-gateways −6.0%, use-against-operate −3.6% — the operators turned back against their suppliers (−2.2% after +3.3%), and the three ratios that rose are all inside the build-out: verification against design +2.4%, design against physical +2.1%, consumables against tools +1.7%. The parts of the stack that sell into this quarter’s volume re-rated against the parts that sell into next year’s capacity.

The AI Build-Out family — four gauges. Compute spot tightness 79, from 90 — the availability layer only, twelve GPUs, the rental layer still developing; Taiwan AI supply 96 on July’s revenue (foundry +99% and ODM +68% year over year, the August print due mid-month); memory/HBM 28 — the big three +22% on the 21-day window with SK hynix +36% carrying it, memory test −7%, packaging flat; semicap test 29 — front-end test −13%, packaging −12%, front-end capex −8%, and back-end test +1% the one green layer, which is the layer the model books bought a week ago.

Taiwan AI Pulse — the Asian leading indicator. Unchanged since the July print: foundry +99%, substrate +72%, ODM +68%, cooling +48%, OSAT +36% year over year, every layer at 86 or higher. The August monthly revenues arrive around the fifteenth; this is the earliest hard number on the build-out anywhere, and it lands in the Fed week.

Memory / HBM Pulse. The big three +22% on 21 days — SK hynix +36% the carrier, Samsung and Micron behind — while memory test (Advantest, Teradyne, Aehr) reads −7% on the window and HBM packaging flat. The gauge is a month wide; inside the week the American memory names fell four to six percent and the Korean one rose seven. The pulse and the price agree on the geography, not on the direction.

Semicap Test Pulse. Front-end test −13% (KLA, Onto, Camtek), advanced packaging −12% (BESI, ASMPT, Disco), front-end capex −8% (ASML, Applied, Lam, Tokyo Electron) — and back-end test +1%, the only green layer. The sibling books bought Advantest, BESI and Tokyo Electron a week ago; two of the three sit in the layers that read coldest.

Compute Spot Tightness. Composite 79 from 90, availability only — an H100 rents at 30% of a B200’s hourly price, the legacy-training tier at 67 cents an hour, the frontier tier at $3.80 with twenty providers. Signpost two lives on this page; the rental layer is not yet live, so the gauge says how available compute is, not what the previous generation earns.

The Agentic Demand Index. Eight pulses: enterprise application 94.6 the hottest, one pulse at 82, five clustered between 59 and 60, the coolest at 42. The token split for the week: 122.6 trillion tokens, China’s open models 62% of them, US models 35% — the builders of the world still run Chinese weights for nearly two of every three tokens, in the week GPT-6 shipped.

The AI-Order Signal Board. WATCH, score one of five: only the dispersion tripwire fired (19.53% against a 19.51% top-quartile floor); breadth 63% above the 50-day, the basket’s relative strength off its 20-day low, the upstream spread positive, and the single-name shock missed by three-tenths (Delta Electronics −6.7%). Price is sensing; revenue — Taiwan’s July layers all accelerating — has not blinked. The house holds the pair in WATCH.

AI Credit Stress — the tape. Spreads are quiet — high yield 2.7% at the 11th percentile of three years, investment grade 0.8% at the 30th — and Treasuries are not: the ten-year at 4.95% and the two-year at 4.56% on the snapshot date, with Thursday’s 30-year auction weak. The ladder: the self-funded hyperscalers still T1 with interest cover in the fifties and eighties; the debt-funded and project-funded rungs unchanged. The equity of the capacity traders sat still this week; their cost of capital rose with the curve.

1 · This Week’s Action

The global view. The ex-US world index closed the week at 85.18, down 1.42% — five cents under the 85.23 support this letter set last Saturday as the weekly-close falsifier. The record close of 86.41 lasted one session: Tuesday 86.06 (Monday was Labor Day in New York), Wednesday 85.39, Thursday 84.30 — the low of the move, under the support by almost a dollar — and Friday 85.18, a recovery that stopped a nickel short of the line. Last week’s edition said a weekly close under 85.23 “ends a record, not a drift.” On the letter’s own standard, that is what this week’s close did. The all-world index closed 159.94, down 1.11%, 1.5% under its August 13 record; the S&P fell 0.77%, the Nasdaq 100 0.57%.

The year’s order held but narrowed. VEU +15.8% for 2026, VT +13.4%, the S&P +12.1% — the ex-US lead over America is 3.7 points, from 4.5 last week, because this was a week the world gave back more than America did. It is the first stay-home week in two, and it came with the record’s reversal.

Korea is where the certificate was tested — twice, and it held on the week. Last Saturday this letter set the frame: hold above 183.46 on the weekly closes, 190.11 the sidecar-day cap. The fund did both things the frame did not ask for: Wednesday it closed 190.78, through the cap on a daily close; Thursday it closed 182.78, under the high water on a daily close, a 4.2% session. Friday’s 188.72 put it back between the lines — −0.08% on the week, flat to the cent, above 183.46 on the weekly close and under 190.11. In Seoul the week was not flat: the Kospi rose 3.3% in won, from 6,687 to 6,910, touched 7,172 on Tuesday, closed above 7,000 on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, and finished the week below it. The dollar wrapper had paid for Monday’s 4.2% Seoul session on Friday September 4, in New York, before Seoul opened — which is why the local index is up three percent on the week and the fund is unchanged. +94.1% on the year in dollars.

Behind it the regional board inverted for a fifth time in six weeks. Last week’s twenty-eight green of thirty-five became four green of thirty-one red — the narrowest board since this letter began tracking the breadth flips in July. The four: Thailand +0.98%, Poland +0.98%, Brazil +0.87%, Japan +0.28% — two periphery lines, one commodity exporter, and the one developed market whose currency was the story. The bottom was three continents wide: New Zealand −4.62%, Switzerland −4.48% the worst large market, China large-caps −3.87%, Australia −3.18%, Hong Kong −2.93%, India −2.68%, Indonesia −2.37%, Germany −2.32%. The best-to-worst spread narrowed to 5.60 points from 8.07 — a board that goes red almost everywhere while its spread narrows is de-grossing, not dispersing. Last week the money changed neighborhoods; this week it left.

The cross-asset backdrop — the barrel again, and then everything else again. USO +9.12% led the board by a distance for a second consecutive week — two nine-percent weeks back to back, +124% on the year — and the reason sits in section 2: Brent closed above $100 on Wednesday for the first time since July and settled $107.63 on Thursday after Houthi attacks cut Saudi capacity by about 600,000 barrels a day. The only other green lines were the two megacap wrappers, +0.12% and +0.09%, and the dollar was flat. The bottom: the bitcoin fund −3.23%, silver −2.84%, copper miners −2.35%, gold −1.97%, the long bond −1.63%, the belly −1.34%, the S&P −0.77%, the Nasdaq 100 −0.57%. Three green, nine red. Last week the oil line and the copper line pointed in opposite directions and this letter called it a supply shock, not a growth signal; this week they still do, and the two duration lines fell with both hedges, which is the supply shock arriving in the discount rate. The funding tells did not harden this week. They broke.

The US sectors. Three of eleven closed green: energy +1.69%, communications +0.51%, technology +0.21%. The bottom: health care −3.55% — the worst US sector by a distance, and section 1’s engine says it was the worst sector on earth — materials −2.84%, discretionary −1.70%, industrials −1.65%, utilities −1.60%, financials −1.46%, staples −1.42%, real estate −1.16%. Not the duration sort of last week, when the rate-sensitive groups and the commodity groups sat at the bottom together. This is a sort with two floors: the commodity-input groups (materials, industrials) still down, but the defensives — health care, utilities, staples — down as much or more. Sunday’s letter owns the tape beneath it; the geography is that a market selling its defensives on a down week is a market raising cash, not rotating.

The tech ETFs — the split held, and the chip stack split inside itself. Six green lines of twenty-one, and five of the six are silicon or the pipe to it: the S&P semiconductor fund +2.87% led the board, the fabless vehicle +1.18%, the grid fund +1.00%, the IoT line +0.56%, data centers +0.28%, SMH +0.27%. The red fifteen are the layer above the chip and the two side-bets: uranium −5.61%, fintech −4.74%, lithium −3.63%, ARK −3.06%, software −2.92% — a third consecutive week as one of the board’s worst lines — digital assets −2.69%, cloud −2.37%. The software-to-semis ratio kept falling; the pair monitor reads the spread at 0.6 standard deviations, closing from 1.1. Two weeks of software over silicon, now two weeks of silicon over software, and the sort has a name from last week: duration. What changed inside the stack is the part Sunday’s Hypergrowth letter owns — the equal-weight semis (+2.87%) beat the cap-weighted (+0.27%) by two and a half points because Nvidia fell 4.45% and the memory names were sold on Thursday and not bought back on Friday. The chip trade is no longer one trade.

The global sectors. Two green of twelve: energy +2.16% and communications +1.35%. Technology −0.13%, flat. Then the decider this letter has tracked for four editions: global financials fell 2.02% to 134.23 — from the 137.00 record set on September 3 to under the 134.55 August line, in six sessions. Materials −2.81% to 112.05, under the February line for a third week; the bottom is health care −3.95%, the worst global sector, with consumer discretionary −2.29% and REITs −1.53% beside it. Three editions ago materials set a record and un-cleared its line within five sessions. This week financials did the identical thing on a one-week delay. Two of the four sectors that decide the tape have now taken a record and given it back inside a week; the pattern this letter has been describing since August has a second data point, and it is the same shape.

Was the sector week global, or one region carrying the average? The house Sector Engine decomposes each of the eleven sectors into its four regional legs, and this week’s answer is the mirror of last week’s: eight cells green of forty-four. Last week every emerging-market cell was green; this week EM has one green cell in eleven — technology, +1.0%. The US has two (tech +0.9%, energy +0.8%), Europe three (tech +2.6%, communications +2.0%, utilities +0.1%), developed Asia two (energy +6.4%, utilities +1.6%). Health care was red in all four regions — US −4.6%, Europe −5.5%, developed Asia −3.5%, EM −1.2% — the only sector red everywhere, and the worst cell on the board in Europe. And the sharpest single split, for a third consecutive week, is energy, with the sign alternating a third time: the US cut +0.8%, Europe’s energy −3.2%, and developed Asia’s +6.4% — the strongest cell on the entire board, the Tokyo-proxied refiners and trading houses catching the barrel Europe’s integrated majors did not. Three weeks, three different regions owning the same commodity.

The Global Compass

Regions: the corridor split, and developed beat emerging for the first time in four weeks. Emerging fell more than developed — VWO −1.77% against VEA −1.45% — after three straight weeks of EM leading, and the composition of the loss is the week’s regional story: China large-caps −3.87%, India −2.68%, Indonesia −2.37%, Hong Kong −2.93% — the non-corridor half of EM — while the corridor split in two. Korea flat in dollars and +3.3% in won; Taiwan −1.13% in dollars and −0.8% in Taipei; Japan +0.28% in dollars to 98.56 — a new record close — and −1.55% on the Nikkei, −1.8% on the TOPIX. Japan made a record in the currency its wrapper reports in while falling in the currency its companies report in. The read this letter carried last week — the AI-supply-chain bid is cyclical inside a broadening market — got its counter-demonstration: when the market narrows, the corridor’s dollar wrappers are held up by their currencies for exactly as long as the currencies rise. The won and the yen both rose this week. Section 7 says why that is the asterisk, not the answer.

Sectors: the defensives were sold harder than the cyclicals, on a down week. The engine’s cyclical-defensive spreads carry a sign this letter has not printed in a red week before: US +1.6% — cyclicals −1.1%, defensives −2.8% — and Europe +2.1% — cyclicals −0.4%, defensives −2.5%. Developed Asia was the exception again, −0.7%, the cyclicals down two percent against the defensives’ −1.3%. In price the week was risk-off; in relative terms it was risk-on, because the sectors that lost most were the ones that are supposed to lose least. Health care −4.6% in the US and −5.5% in Europe is what did it. That is not a rotation reading. It is a liquidation reading: the groups with the most gains to sell were sold, whatever their beta.

Sectors: the leaders’ bench cleared a line, held it a day, and gave it back — twice now. Three editions of materials read led, lagged, led-to-a-record, un-cleared. Two editions of financials: “one green day from its record,” then the record on Thursday September 3, then 134.23 this Friday, under the 134.55 line it had cleared to get there. Technology −0.13% and 4.7% under its June high; energy +2.16%, the barrel +124% on the year and the sector +42%; industrials −1.14%, 5.7% under its August high. A board where the closest challenger takes its record and gives it back within a week, and the previous challenger did the same thing three weeks earlier, is a board that can clear lines and cannot hold them. Last week this letter said that question had been open since materials first asked it. It is answered now, twice, the same way.

Stay home vs go global — the US view. America lost less: VEU −1.42%, VT −1.11%, SPY −0.77% — the first stay-home week in two, and it came the week the world index gave back its record. The year reads the other way and still comfortably: +15.8% against +13.4% against +12.1%, ex-US ahead by 3.7 points, from 4.5. Both readings, both honest: the trend is intact, the week went against it, and the weekly closes on VEU’s board are what decide which one is the signal — 86.41 the record, 86.08 the old one, and 85.23 now above the price, five cents above it, which makes it a line to reclaim rather than a line to hold.

Stay home vs go global — the Europe view: the mask flipped a fourth time. Last week the dollar wrapper fell less than the hedged one because the euro was bid. This week the euro slipped a fifth of a percent and the dollar-listed Europe fund fell 1.87% while the euro-hedged wrapper fell 1.66% — the currency was the worse half by a hair, the equities the story. Underneath: Germany −2.32% in dollars, the DAX −2.0% in euros, from 26,046 to 25,519; the Stoxx 600 −1.7%; the Euro Stoxx 50 −1.1%; France −1.66%; the UK −1.34%; and Switzerland −4.48% — the SMI’s worst week of the summer, −4.05% in francs, health care’s home index. And the bond market moved harder than the stock market: the Bund’s ten-year yield closed the week at 3.52%, up 17 basis points from 3.35%, after the ECB raised its deposit rate to 2.50% on Thursday — unanimously, Lagarde’s “no-brainer,” the second hike of the war — and France borrowed at 4.45% against Italy’s 4.35%: the inversion is ten basis points now, from six. The gilt 5.28%. Europe’s two core markets pointed the same way last week. This week the periphery joined them, and the Swiss defensives went first.

Stay home vs go global — the Asia view: the corridor was three markets this week. Last week the corridor answered twice in one direction. This week it answered three ways. Japan: a record close in dollars at 98.56, up 0.28%, on a week the Nikkei fell 1.55% from 65,021 to 64,011 and the TOPIX 1.8% — because dollar-yen fell from 155.66 to 153.55, the yen’s strongest level in seven months, past the peak of July’s intervention. Korea: +3.3% in Seoul, flat in New York, for the timing reason above; the local market touched 7,172 on Tuesday, closed 6,910 on Friday, under 7,000. Taiwan: −1.13% in dollars, −0.8% in Taipei, 110.91 from the 112.18 record set on September 4, after Thursday’s 108.92 — the corridor’s logic economy sold with the US chip leaders on Thursday and bought back less on Friday. Korea over Taiwan +1.1 points on the week; Korea over global semis −0.3. Memory over logic held; the corridor over the world did not. The re-rating question from July stays answered in price for Korea and Japan. The asterisk is now two currencies wide.

The engine’s Asia spreads put the wrapper-versus-home gap on one panel: Kospi minus EWY +3.4 points, Nikkei minus EWJ −1.8 points, Taiex minus EWT +0.3. The memory vehicle, DRAM, fell 0.99% to 59.10 — 61.58 on Wednesday, 58.56 on Thursday, and above the 58 line on every close of the week. Last week memory diverged from its region’s confirmation and then closed the gap in memory’s favour; this week memory held while the region’s wrappers gave ground. Two weeks of memory leading logic, and section 3’s Rubin sub-indices say which physical layers were bought with it.

Stay tech vs go broad. Tech led by losing less, at home and abroad. The Nasdaq 100 −0.57% against the S&P’s −0.77%; global tech −0.13% against the world’s −1.11%. Technology the third-best US sector and the third-best global sector; the equal-weight semis the best tech line, software among the worst. Tech led the way it led last week — by its silicon — but the aggregate went negative this time because the chips’ gain was smaller than the code’s loss and the biggest chip fell 4.45%. Same direction inside the stack, a weaker aggregate: the week the leadership narrowed inside the leader.

Momentum vs defensive — both ends fell, and the pattern broke the right way. International min-vol fell 0.84% to 93.98 — after three consecutive weeks of making a high and not holding it, it made no high at all. International momentum fell 0.96% to 53.74, ninety cents under the failed August breakout at 54.64, a fifth week below it. Global min-vol −1.75%. The defensive end fell almost as much as the aggressive end, on a week the world index fell 1.4%: the factor pair did not sort the week, the liquidation did. On the year momentum still leads min-vol +12.0% against +9.0%; the regime is intact, and for the first time in four weeks the week went neither with it nor against it — it went through it.

One more pair, awake and pointing the old way. EAFE value −0.81% against EAFE growth −2.23% — value led by 1.4 points on a down week, the second week running, and it led on the week the corridor’s growth wrappers gave ground and the commodity exporters (Brazil, Norway, Poland) held. On the year value keeps the argument, +15.3% against +6.9%, and the gap widened to 8.4 points from 6.9. Last week both factor pairs moved the same way — momentum up, value up, min-vol up but fading — and this letter called it a repricing. This week momentum and min-vol fell together and value led growth: the risk appetite that changed neighborhoods last week went home this week, and the neighborhood it left was growth.

2 · The State

The mechanism, named: the oil shock went into the curve, and the curve went into everything. Put the week in order. Monday, with New York closed, Seoul rose 4.2% on OpenAI’s new model and Tokyo 2%. Tuesday, Wall Street reopened and sold — the Dow −1.2%, six of thirty stocks up — while Brent went to $99 after the US struck five Iranian tankers and Iran said it had hit two American vessels and eight tankers; the ten-year closed at 4.81%, its highest since October 2023. Wednesday Brent closed above $100 for the first time since July, Europe fell two percent, the ten-year went to 4.86%, and the Treasury tripled its buyback to $6 billion. Thursday the ECB hiked, producer prices printed 5.4% on the year, Houthi attacks cut Saudi capacity by about 600,000 barrels a day, Brent settled $107.63, the thirty-year yield closed at 5.36% — its highest since 2007 — after a weak auction in which the buyback bought only $5.2 billion of the $6 billion offered, and the belly of the Treasury curve made a new low. Four down days; the world index’s record gone by Wednesday’s close. Then Friday, at 08:30 in Washington: CPI +0.4% on the month and 3.4% on the year, in line; core +0.3% against 0.2% expected; gasoline +3.9% and more than a third of the increase; hike odds for September 16 to about 82%. And the tape rose one percent — its first up day in five — with the chips +2.4%, the VIX −11%, and WTI back to $100 at the settle from $102.48. The honest name for the week: the market repriced the bill from Monday to Thursday and bought the invoice on Friday. Whether it pays twice is the question the Fed answers on Wednesday.

What did choose: the two quiet tells, both against — and the third one, for. The bond market first. IEF spent the week entirely under the reclaim line and falling — 92.16, 91.90, 91.18, 91.01 — never approaching 93.17, and printing 91.01 on Friday, a new low for the year and for the past twelve months. That is the fifth consecutive failed weekly reclaim, and the second of the five with no midweek push at all; last week the pattern changed from “trying and failing” to “not trying,” and this week it changed again to “falling.” TLT broke its own floor: 80.78 on Thursday, a new fifty-two-week low close, 80.87 Friday — under the 81.2 this letter said “keeps it a dissent rather than an alarm.” The structure the house has carried since July — the long bond holds, the belly refuses — did not hold this week; both ends fell, the belly more. The bond veto over the equity read is engaged, and it is no longer a dissent. Then the yen, which chose the other way again, harder: dollar-yen fell from 155.66 to 153.55, its low 153.48 on Wednesday — the yen’s strongest level in seven months, past the peak of July’s intervention, on a week the Bank of Japan meets next. Last week this letter revised the line to “156 is the line, 160 is the door” and said a weekly close under 155 “says the intervention-and-hike loop has taken over from the carry loop.” It closed under 155. The loop has taken over. Two tells against the bull, one for it — and the one for it is the one that unwinds the funding of the other two.

The podium turned once, and the tape heard the data instead. The ECB on Thursday: 2.50%, unanimous, no guidance on the next step, and Lagarde’s “no-brainer” — the second hike of the war, delivered with the Bund at its highest since 2011 and France borrowing dearer than Italy. Friday’s CPI was the number Waller said he was waiting for, and it came in hot on core by a tenth. The reading the previous two editions carried as the central tension — hard assets priced for an easing cycle against central banks leaning hawkish — resolved for a third week in the hawks’ favour, and this time on both sides of the Atlantic at once: gold −1.97% on the week, silver −2.84%, copper miners −2.35% with a −7% Thursday, the bitcoin fund −3.23%, the dollar flat at 99. Gold spent Thursday at 396.36 on the fund — under the 396.75 falsifier this letter set — and reclaimed it Friday at 398.77; the gold future at 4,366 from 4,430. Bitcoin −4.4% on the week to 76,813, with a 76,568 close on Thursday — the coin’s first close under the 77,000 floor of the zone it had not left since June. The same input, the same trade, and this time both scorecards say the same thing: the metal fell, the coin fell, and one of them left its range.

One session, and the pattern with a memory inside it — inverted. Two weeks of Friday sessions gave this letter a rhyme: a discount rate leaning up on a policy signal buys duration-light quality; leaning up on a growth signal buys the order book. This Friday was a third variant — a discount rate leaning up on an inflation signal — and the market bought the order book anyway: chips +2.4%, Marvell +4.7%, Intel +2.9%, AMD +2.1%, the equal-weight S&P +0.8%, discretionary +0.9% on a Michigan sentiment print of 47.8, the weakest since May’s record low, with one-year inflation expectations at 4.6%. The consumer said stagflation and the tape bought the consumer. What did not come back is the part that matters for the physical layer: SanDisk −3.4%, Western Digital −2.4%, Micron flat on a day the rest of the chip trade was bought in the exact order it had been sold on Thursday. The chip trade is being sorted from the inside now. Sunday’s Hypergrowth letter owns the names; the geography is that the memory economy is Korean, and Korea’s wrapper closed the week flat.

The two hard-asset charts, read the house way. Gold: the impulse out of the consolidation stalled a second week, this time from above — the fund’s Thursday close at 396.36 was under the falsifier, Friday’s 398.77 was back above it, and the week’s high of 406.56 never re-approached the 410.22 line to clear. The count’s leg is alive by 39 cents of Thursday close and two dollars of Friday close. Bitcoin: the coin closed under the zone on Thursday — 76,568 — and stayed under it Friday at 76,813; the fund closed 43.77, under both the 44 and 44.5 lines it had reclaimed a week ago, with a 43.42 low. Last week one hedge reclaimed its lines and the other made a lower low; this week both lost their lines, one by a daily close and one by the weekly. The pair ratio that had pushed to the bottom of its post-February range — the crypto leg holding better than the metal — turned: on the week the metal held better. Inside the duration repricing there is no longer a preferred hedge; there is a preferred cash position.

Seoul: the certificate was tested from both sides in one week, and it is intact on the weekly close. The fund walked 188.87 → 189.91 → 190.78 (through the cap) → 182.78 (under the high water) → 188.72. The structural read from four weeks ago — breakout, consolidation above the broken channel, completed double bottom, resistance at 180 — now has its confirmation candle, two held weeks, a daily close through the cap that did not become a weekly close, and a daily close under the high water that did not become one either. What it also has is the currency clause working both ways at once: the won rose 1.1% to 1,341 — the corridor’s currency was bid on the week — and the local index rose 3.3% while the wrapper stood still, because the wrapper had already paid for the local rally before it happened. The certificate is genuine and co-signed. This week the co-signature was worth three points of return the dollar investor did not receive.

Europe, two machines, and the weighing machine moved first. The voting machine sold everything with a defensive label: Switzerland −4%, health care −5.5% in the engine’s European cut, real estate −3.4%, the DAX −2%, the Stoxx 600 −1.7%. The weighing machine, which moved last week for the first time in a month, moved again and harder: the Bund 3.52% from 3.35%, up 17 basis points in a week and 37 in twenty-one days; France 4.45% from 4.21%, up 24; Italy 4.35% from 4.14%, up 21; the gilt 5.28% from 5.06%, up 22. France over Italy is ten basis points now, from six, from four tenths of one three weeks ago. And the sovereign board’s composite jumped: the Sovereign Pressure Index at +0.85 from +0.43, with the twenty-one-day baseline at +0.37 — the pressure re-heating on the ten-year leg (z-score 1.9) with the curve flattening (z-slope −2.3): the belly of every G7 curve sold, the long ends less. The equal-weight G7 ten-year yield rose 18 basis points on the week to 4.21%, its path Monday to Friday 3.98, 4.06, 4.12, 4.21, 4.21. And the hemisphere swap this letter tracked for two weeks stopped swapping: the US thirty-year sold to 5.36% and Japan’s thirty-year sold to 4.05% from 3.97% — both sovereign complexes exhaling at once, for the first time since August. The Atlantic has the pressure, the Pacific joined it, and the ECB hiked into it.

The macro print. Friday’s CPI belongs to Sunday’s letter in its print-record detail; its geography belongs here, and it was the reverse of last week’s payrolls. A hot core number did not lift the corridor — Seoul had closed 1.8% lower on Thursday’s New York tape before the print, and the dollar wrappers on Korea and Taiwan recovered 3% and 2% on Friday from Thursday’s holes without recovering the week. It did not sell Germany further; the DAX rose 0.6% into the US open. And it bought the cyclical end of every US board while the memory names, the software complex and both hedges stayed sold. Two weeks ago the market would not pay for beats; last week it paid for a growth number; this week it paid for an inflation number. A market that pays for a hot CPI is telling you it had already paid for a hotter one — from Monday to Thursday, in the curve. Section 6 says what follows if the Fed disagrees with the tape’s arithmetic.

Hold both halves. The equity boards resolved downward — the world index under its falsifier by five cents, financials under its August line a week after its record, breadth from twenty-eight of thirty-five to four, the four house indices three red of four. The funding tells split the same way they did last week and each one moved further: the belly at a new low and the long bond through its floor, the yen through 155 the other way, the Atlantic and the Pacific sovereign complexes selling together. Sideways ended two weeks ago upward. This week it ended again, downward, and the bill for the record was presented before the number that was supposed to present it.

The structural read — the wave count, five years up, unchanged. Zoom out and this week changes the count’s status without changing the count. From the October 2022 low the house count on the world ex-US reads waves 1 and 2 complete and wave 3 still progressing — price riding the upper half of a four-year channel, with the September 4 record as a new high inside an advance whose projection runs to the channel’s top, above 90. On this count the week’s 1.4% is a pause in a third wave, the kind that arrives on a breadth collapse and a narrowing spread and does not change the direction of the channel. The count keeps its own falsifier — it fails at the channel, not at the 85.23 shelf — and the channel’s lower line sits near 72, a long way under the price. The all-world index, on the same chart, is riding its own rising line from the April 2025 low with the August record a point above it. The September base case this letter stated two weeks ago, about five percent of consolidation, is now 1.4% in on the world index and 1.8% on the S&P from its August high. The count says pause; the shelf says the pause is real. Probability, not prophecy.

3 · The Outlook

The three-index read — the money stayed in the layer that builds, and left everything else. We read the three together because they are three stages of one spend: capex (Rubin Build-Out, what gets built), opex (Agentic Ecosystem, what it costs to run), applications (Agentic Winners, what gets sold on top).

Capex +1.04% on the week — again the only green line of the four — and +91.1% on the year. Opex −1.17% and +55.3%. Applications −4.71% and −7.0%. The order of last week held and widened: the buildout index closed Friday at 1,963.98 after a 0.9% day, from 1,947 on Thursday, while the applications layer had the family’s worst week — 949.64 Monday on the Asian closes, 923.31 Tuesday, 905.30 Wednesday, and a 910.65 close. Inside the week the buildout was green Monday through Wednesday at 1,986 and gave back two percent on Thursday with the chips; the applications layer was red every session but Friday. That is the duration sort, second week, rendered in the house’s own instruments — and this week the physical layer’s lead over the digital one was six points, from three.

The control group fell with the stack — and further than two of its three layers. Last week HALO — our growth index carrying no AI thesis — fell 2.02% while the two lighter AI layers fell 2.3% and 2.4%: the AI stack moving with growth. This week HALO fell 3.54% while opex fell 1.17% and applications 4.71% — growth was sold, the applications layer of the AI trade was sold harder, and the physical layer was bought. Put the four weeks together: AI unwind inside a flat growth tape, AI bid inside a growth sell, growth sell with the stack inside it, and now a growth sell in which the stack’s top layer led the selling and its bottom layer escaped it. The oscillation between “the AI stack” and “everything else” has been replaced for a second week by a sort that runs through the stack itself — physical over digital — and this week the digital end of the stack traded like the most expensive growth in the market, because it is. Inside HALO the week was broad and red — 2 of 23 sub-indices green, Asia-Pacific +0.72% and energy transition +0.61% — with better food −7.13%, nuclear −5.89%, longevity −5.84%, hypergrowth −5.40% and med-devices −5.03% the casualties, and North America −4.75% against Europe −3.16%. HALO is +0.3% on the year now. It was +4.0% a week ago.

Read the three windows together, because the disagreement is still the signal — and it narrowed. On the year capex leads and it is not close: +91.1% against +55.3% against −7.0%. On the month the inversion is gone: capex −6.6%, opex −9.1%, applications −0.3% — the month’s leader is the layer that lost least, and it is the applications layer, because its selling started three weeks earlier. On the week, the year’s order: capex first, applications last. Two of the three windows now point to the builder, and the one that does not is pointing at whichever layer fell first. The leadership handoff this letter has described as contested for five weeks is, this week, not being contested — it is being liquidated from the top of the stack down.

The correction lows, re-measured. Applications — which bottomed first, on June 25 — is now +31.3% off its low, from +29.3% a week ago on the revised worker history (the Amphenol split reseed of September 6 restated the Rubin series; the family’s lows are unchanged). Capex, off its July 29 low, rose to +15.0% from +13.2%; opex fell to +2.2% off a new post-high low set on September 2 at 1,500, from +14.3% off the July low it has now undercut. The spring pattern — the index that bottoms first goes on to lead — is five weeks confirmed for the applications layer’s low and two weeks dented for its lead. Probability, not prophecy.

The structural line moved the wrong way for three of four. Applications closed 9.7% below its January high — from 5.3% below a week ago; it gave back the whole gap it had recovered in August. Opex sits 9.1% below its August 13 high, from 8.1%. HALO 9.3% below its January high, from 6.0%. Capex remains 20.8% below June — from 22.0%, the only layer whose distance to its peak shrank this week, for a second week. The buildout is the only house index closer to its high than it was a week ago, and it is the one furthest from it.

Inside capex: the plant got bought, the tools got sold. The best lines in the buildout were data-center construction +6.66%, DC power and electrical +6.46%, the US constituents +5.65%, foundry and integration +5.16%, AI factory systems +3.91%, testing and metrology +3.90%, substrates +3.19%, HBM memory +2.71% — the physical plant of the buildout and the parts of the chip that go into a rack. The bottom is the equipment that makes the chip: lithography −3.69%, storage −3.52% (still +341% on the year), photomasks −3.20%, wafer processing −3.09%, grid and power −2.08%, the Japan constituents −2.03%. The buildout’s own geography split: US members +5.65%, Europe +1.26%, Asia-Pacific ex-Japan +0.35%, Japan −2.03% — the same corridor split as section 1, inside the index that owns the corridor. Twenty of thirty-six sub-indices green; the buildout’s breadth was the best in the family for a second week, and it was the only index with breadth at all.

Inside opex: the edge got bought, the model got sold. The clear green line was edge and distribution +4.11% — Cloudflare +10.5% on Wednesday carried it — with runtime and API gateways +0.82%, Europe’s constituents +0.74% and the substrate layer +0.66% behind it. The bottom: foundation models −26.25% — the one-name sub-index, Zhipu, sold 10% on Tuesday after a Jefferies multiple cut and kept going; still +499% on the year — identity and governance −6.82%, Asia’s constituents −5.97%, data and memory −4.46%, execution −3.15%, agentic security −3.07%. Four of fourteen green. The layer that runs AI split by geography this week rather than by function: Europe and the US constituents (−1.53%) held, Asia’s (−5.97%) did not, and the one foundation-model name on the board lost a quarter of its value in a week without changing the sign of its year.

Inside applications: nothing held, and the megacap edge held least badly. Zero of nine sub-indices green. The best line was the megacap gateway −0.43%, still the only sub-index positive on the year at +11.6%; then consumer −2.79%, endpoints −4.08%, enterprise −5.45%. The bottom: control plane −9.72%, the US constituents −6.99%, Asia’s −6.85%, application leaders −6.29%, Europe’s −6.17%. Last week two edges survived the sort; this week one did, and only relatively. The control plane — the layer that orchestrates agents — lost nearly ten percent in four sessions, on the week the enterprise-software complex (Shopify, UiPath, Atlassian, ServiceNow, Workday) was sold Tuesday and not recovered. The applications layer is −7.0% on the year, from −2.4%. It was one ordinary week from green three weeks ago.

The regime gauge. The Money Temperature instrument board closed the week at 50 — down five from 55 a week ago, after 53 Tuesday, 55 Wednesday and 47 on Thursday, with the regime read “Risk-on rally” at moderate confidence, from high, and Thursday’s read “mixed / transitional” at low. The spread underneath cooled in every direction: risk appetite +19 from +28, speculation +12 from +9, dedollarization −13 from −7, duration −16 from −28. The duration spread narrowing from −28 to −16 is the week’s most awkward internal: money was still leaving long bonds, but less fast, on a week the long bond made a new low. The gauge reads that as the equity side cooling toward the bond side rather than the bond side warming — which is the liquidation reading again, in the instrument’s own words. Per instrument: the Nasdaq 100 warmest at 64, EM 63, the dollar 54, the S&P 52, bitcoin 49, the world ex-US 47, the long bond 36, gold 33 — the coldest instrument on the board.

1 · This Week’s Action

The tape, day by day. Another quiet index week sat on top of a bond rout, an oil shock and a jobs report — and it moved a tenth of a percent. Monday −0.30% as gold’s Friday break hung over August’s last session and the dollar caught its bid. Tuesday −0.69%, the widest down day: Japan’s 10-year closed above three percent for the first time since 1996, the Bund at a 2011 level, the US 10-year through 4.78% on a sixth straight rising session — and, overnight, the US and Iran exchanged fire with two tankers reported hit near Hormuz, WTI +5% in two sessions. Wednesday +0.44% with the 10-year at 4.81%, its highest since November 2023, and oil through 90. Thursday +1.05%, the widest move of the week: Waller cut the September hike odds to a coin flip, Nvidia bought Hugging Face, the belly of the curve steadied. Friday −0.39% on a payrolls print of 162,000 against roughly 53,000 expected — the first jobs report of the Warsh chairmanship, three times the forecast, with 55,000 of upward revisions behind it — which put the September hike back above 58% odds, spiked the two-year to 4.425%, and split the tape by layer in the opposite direction from the whole month: chips +3, software −2.

Five sessions, and the S&P finished +0.11% at 770.19, the Nasdaq 100 +0.35% at 718.96, still above the 50-day (711.08) it reclaimed last week, and the equal-weight S&P −0.77% — the second consecutive week cap-weight beat equal-weight. Everything that happened this week happened underneath the index again. This week, for the first time in three, what happened underneath favoured the silicon.

The cross-asset board — oil owns it. The best line on the board is not an equity: USO +9.45% on the week, +23.6% on the month, +105% on the year — the Hormuz exchange put WTI above 90 and Brent near 96 by Friday. The coin fund +3.03% (IBIT 45.23) and the two top-heavy US cuts (+1.22%, +1.13%) are the only other green of consequence. The hard assets were sold: gold −0.52% to 406.77 after Thursday’s high at 410.22 and Friday’s payrolls-day fall; silver −0.33%; copper miners −3.98%, the worst line. Both Treasury funds red — IEF −0.65% to 92.25, TLT −0.81% to 82.21 — with the belly making a new year-to-date low on Tuesday. Saturday’s letter carries the sovereign board and the hard-asset charts in full; the one-sentence version for the tape: gold and bitcoin both rose to their resistance and the first attempt to break failed — the read stays constructive, and it stays unconfirmed.

The sector read — energy took the board, and the inversion stopped. Five green of eleven: energy +2.20%, technology +0.86%, utilities +0.82%, health care +0.17%, financials flat. Six red: communications −0.85%, staples −1.02%, industrials −1.06%, real estate −1.24%, materials −1.39%, discretionary −1.96%, the worst. For two weeks this letter recorded full inversions — each week’s leaders became the next week’s casualties. This week the pattern broke: technology, top-three last week, stayed green; health care, bottom-five last week, came back to flat; energy, quietly strong for a month on both lenses, finally led outright. A tape that has been auditioning leaders and dismissing them after five sessions kept two of them this time.

The sector rankings — relative strength, three lenses. Our sector-RS board reads the rotation’s speed, and this week it reads a leader by a distance: energy +11.7 points against the index over 21 days, +6.7 over 63 — the month’s leader, and the only sector whose month is stronger than its quarter by that margin. Health care keeps the quarter crown (+7.6 over 63) and repaired its month (+4.4) after fading last week. Technology: +0.7 on the month, −0.6 on the quarter — the tired leader that was −4.5 on the quarter a fortnight ago has had its quarter forgiven; it is now flat on every lens, which is not leadership but is no longer the drag. Financials +0.1 and +6.7: flat month, strong quarter. And the bottom two moved: industrials −6.0 over 21 days is now the worst line on the board, while utilities, last on every lens a week ago, improved to −1.4 on the month as the long end rallied. The rotation slowed. Last week it ran in both directions at once; this week it ran in one — toward the sector that a Hormuz headline prices first.

Underneath the four focus sectors — the breadth split along the same line as the tape. The dispersion pages show the members behind each ETF. Technology: 51% of members above their 50-day — still only half — but 28 five-day highs against 15 lows, a +13 net after last week’s balanced 14-against-15. The chip names printed highs on Friday while the software names printed lows: the sector’s internals firmed exactly where its ETF did. Health care: 76% above the 50-day, 83% above the 100-day — and 2 five-day highs against 16 lows, −14 net after −20 last week. The medium-term structure is intact; the week’s tape has now been against it twice. Financials 12 highs against 7 lows with 92% above the 150-day — the strongest structure on the board. Energy the paradox: 90% of members above the 50-day, and yet 2 highs against 11 lows on Friday — the sector led on the week and was sold on payrolls day. Industrials the mirror: only 24% above the 50-day, but 27 highs against 15 lows — a broken sector bouncing broadly. One week ago the internals rotated as fast as the surface. This week they sorted by the same axis the surface did: silicon over code.

The factor read — the repair landed. The factor-regime gauge retired last week’s label. For three weeks it read momentum repair attempt below trend, with the percentile bleeding from 94.6 to 92.3 to 89.7. This week: the momentum-over-low-vol spread indexed at 159.08 against a 50-day at 155.92 — above trend — at the 94.18th percentile, and the state reads “momentum leading, risk appetite building”. The pair behind it: SPMO +2.00% against SPLV −0.45%, the twenty-day rates of change now +1.99 against −1.93, the sixty-day +3.02. Saturday’s letter found the international pair less decided — both ends rose, min-vol made a high on Thursday and gave it back. At home the style axis, which went quiet during the violent layer rotations of the last fortnight, moved this week — and it moved toward risk, on a hawkish jobs number, in the week the belly of the curve made a new low. That is the factor market saying the growth in the payrolls print matters more to it than the discount rate in the two-year. It is a reading, not a verdict; the gauge has retired labels before.

The axis, one week on — the everything-else trade trailed again, and the tech trade split down the middle. Two weeks ago the ex-tech cuts led at three-year highs; last week they gave back; this week they trailed a second time: the Nasdaq 100 ex-technology −1.39% against the Nasdaq 100’s +0.35%; the S&P ex-tech −0.39% against the S&P’s +0.11%. The year-to-date order still reads the other way, and the second pillar’s count — the number of consecutive weeks tech beats its ex-tech cuts — stands at two, against a stated limit of four. Run the pairs and one more thing shows: the Nasdaq 100’s own equal-weight technology sleeve fell 1.23% while the cap-weighted index rose. Tech beat everything-else this week, and inside tech, three names did the beating.

Because the money did not go where last week’s rule sent it. Last week the rule read “the market pays the layer, not the beat”, and it paid software: IGV +5.93%, through 107.70, green on the year. This week: software −4.50%, the worst line on the tech board but one — and the silicon it had been beating for a fortnight took the top of the board: SMH +2.51%, SOXX +2.21%, XSD +1.99%, SMHX +1.57%. IGV’s week, session by session, is the whole letter: Monday 109.98, holding the breakout; Tuesday −3.46% to 106.18, back under the 107.70 line it had broken the week before; Wednesday 103.42, under the year; Thursday +3.41% to 106.95 — green on 2026 again, intraday and at the close; Friday −2.23% to 104.57, red on the year by 1.06%. A breakout that lasted one weekly close, a retest that failed on the second session, a year regained on Thursday and given back on Friday. The pair board dates the turn: the software-to-semis ratio fell 6.84% in the week — from 52% above its June 22 low to 41% above it, a full month of the ratio’s rise surrendered in five sessions, most of it on Friday.

Underneath it, the participation statistic held for a second week — and changed its composition entirely: the Magnificent-7 basket +0.54% against equal-weight’s −0.77%, cap-weight above equal-weight in both indices again. But last week’s re-concentration was into the balance sheets — Microsoft +6.3%, Amazon +3.0%, Alphabet +0.5%. This week those three were the basket’s worst lines — Microsoft −2.69%, Amazon −2.97%, Alphabet −2.35% — and the basket was carried by two names with a chip thesis: Nvidia +5.89% and Meta +6.70%. The re-concentration is still on, and it is no longer a defensive crowding into size. It is a crowding into the two largest expressions of the silicon trade.

Inside tech — the split flipped, and it flipped to the chip. Thirteen green lines of twenty-one, led by the digital-asset fund +7.45% (the coin’s week), the AI-themed basket +3.20%, and the four semiconductor wrappers — SMH +2.51%, XSD +1.99%, SMHX +1.57% — with nuclear, fintech and the internet-of-things fund green behind them. Eight red, and the layer above the chip is all of them: defense tech −4.85%, software −4.50%, cybersecurity −4.03%, cloud −3.64%, then lithium, internet, quantum and grid. Last week: five green, all the layer above the chip; sixteen red, led by the silicon. This week: the exact inversion at board level. The three-week software-over-semis trend that this letter promoted from “tell” to “axis” seven days ago has been interrupted in one week — not overturned on the year, not overturned in the ratio’s two-month structure, but interrupted in the most emphatic single session of the summer.

2 · The State

The sorting rule broke — and the replacement is sharper: the market pays the number, not the beat and not the layer. Fourteen scoring windows closed this week, the record’s largest single week of the season. Seven paid: Nvidia +5.3% (the first paid Nvidia window since May 2024), Synopsys +7.2%, CrowdStrike +22.1%, Salesforce +25.3%, Elastic +10.3%, Dell +23.3%, GitLab +10.5%. Six sold: Marvell −12.9%, Autodesk −8.5%, IREN −9.2%, Rubrik −17.4%, MongoDB −15.1%, Palo Alto −8.0%. One flat: Workday +2.5%, one dollar under the paid line. Sort those by layer and the rule of last week fails on the first pass: three hardware and infrastructure names were paid (Nvidia, Dell, Synopsys), four software names were sold (Autodesk, Rubrik, MongoDB, Palo Alto). Sort them by the size of the beat and it fails again: MongoDB’s was its largest EPS beat in the covered record, Rubrik’s a raised guide, Palo Alto’s a seventh straight double beat — all sold. What sorts them is acceleration: whether the print showed a number still speeding up against a price that had already paid for the last speed. Dell’s $7.04 against $4.91, a 43% surprise on revenue up to $46.97 billion — paid 23%. Broadcom’s faultless quarter with a $34.8 billion guide that merely met the higher of two consensus numbers — sold 6.8% at Thursday’s low, closed −2.7%. Friday’s chart pick wrote the rule in one line: the market is not paying for beats; it is paying for growth that accelerates, and punishing anything that merely met a price already paid.

Broadcom is the rule’s exhibit for the week ahead, and its window is open. EPS $3.32 against $3.22, revenue $29.59 billion against $29.24 billion, AI-semiconductor revenue $16.7 billion, up 221% from a year earlier, against its own $16 billion target — and the stock was sold on the guide until the call put AI revenue at $115 billion for fiscal 2027 and $230 billion for 2028. It closed Thursday at 357.16, a dollar above the level that grades its window as sold, and Friday at 357.89, −2.95% on the week. The window scores at Tuesday’s close from a 367.24 anchor: Broadcom needs +2.6% by Tuesday to score flat, and the tape has to do it through Labor Day. A card that has flipped sign every quarter for a year — +10.0%, −16.0%, +8.9%, −17.2% — arrives at its next verdict with the whole chip complex having just risen 3.5% in a day.

The jobs number, taken seriously — because the tape took it two ways at once. Payrolls +162,000 against roughly 53,000; July revised from −23,000 to +21,000; unemployment 4.1% with participation rising to 61.6%. The rate market read it the obvious way: hike odds for September 16 back above 58% from Thursday’s coin flip, two-year 4.425%, dollar up, gold −1.4% toward $4,400, five of the seven largest technology stocks down. That is the discount-rate effect, and it hit everything whose value sits in the distant future — software and cloud −2, the long-duration growth lines, the ex-tech cuts. But a jobs report is also a demand statement, and the market put semiconductors on the cyclical side of that line: the Philadelphia index +3%, Nvidia toward its record, Applied Materials +5%, Astera Labs +11%. The same number raised the discount rate on the code and raised the near-term earnings expectation on the silicon. Friday’s split is not a rotation between two AI layers. It is the market grading one number twice, and the grades disagreeing by layer.

The veto, scored at the close — no fourth attempt; the belly was sold outright. Three weeks running IEF pushed above 93.17 midweek and was sold back by Friday, each push from higher than the last. This week it made no push at all: 92.74 Monday, 92.10 Tuesday — a new year-to-date low — 92.18, 92.28, 92.25 Friday. The 10-year touched 4.81% on Wednesday, its highest since November 2023; the 30-year finished at 5.247% from 5.207% with its buyback window starting Tuesday. TLT held its floor by a smaller margin — 82.21 against 81.2. Saturday’s letter carries the Pacific half, and it is the more interesting half this week: Japan’s 10-year closed above three percent for the first time since 1996 on Tuesday and was back under it by Friday, and Japan’s 30-year rallied — 3.970% from 4.125% — as the BoJ’s Takata talked “continuous” hikes and the yen went from through-160 to 156 in three sessions. The bond market has now declined to sign the equity resolution four weeks running. This week it did not even show up to argue.

The macro print was a number, and the number turned the September meeting into a hike question again. On Thursday Waller had the market at a coin flip for September 16. On Friday the payrolls put it back above 58%. Between them the yield curve did its own work: the belly at a year low, the long end selling and then steadying, oil through 90 on a shooting exchange in the Gulf that Saturday’s letter owns. The rate-hike-era pattern this letter identified on Warsh’s keynote — balance sheets bid, capex charged, hard assets sold — did not print on Friday. The balance sheets were sold (Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet all red on the week), the capex layer was bid (Rubin +2.5% on Friday alone), and the hard assets were sold. One session is one session; but this session contradicted the template of the last one, and the only consistent reading across both is the one the print record gave: the market pays what is accelerating, and on Friday the accelerating thing was the economy.

The count — above the average, both lines live, neither approached. The Nasdaq 100 closed 718.96 against a 50-day at 711.08 — 1.1% above, from 0.6% last week. The map is unchanged: 1-2 off the April low, wave 3 ongoing, 746.16 the confirmation (3.8% above), 694 the kill-switch (3.5% below). The week traded a 707.64 low on Tuesday and a 718.96 high on Friday’s close; neither line was in play. Saturday’s letter carries the five-year count on the world ex-US, which took its record close on Friday — wave 3 progressing, the three-week postponement over. The two counts still agree, and the domestic one is now the laggard: the world ex-US confirmed, the Nasdaq 100 is still 3.8% from doing so.

The same chart at four focal lengths. The house grid runs the count through its windows: the five-year view carries the wave structure — 1 and 2 complete, wave 3 ongoing inside its channel; the year-to-date view shows this summer’s 1-2 sequence against the 746 line, the 2 low held; the one-month view frames the index under the descending line from the mid-August high — Friday closed exactly on that line at 718.96, with the 701 shelf untested below; and the five-day view shows the week’s own micro-structure: Tuesday’s bond-rout gap down to 707, Thursday’s jump back to 718, and two sessions pressing against a flat 718 top. Four windows, one reading: an advance pausing at descending focal lengths — and the two smallest windows now sit at their line, not below it. A close above 718 on Tuesday resolves the month’s line upward; the count above does not need it, but the week ahead will read it.

3 · The Outlook

The four indices — the physical layer separated from the pack, and it did it on Friday. The family printed the week’s split in one row: Rubin Build-Out +0.40% (the capex layer, +88.1% on the year — the only green line, and green only because of Friday’s +2.5% session: 1886.14 to 1933.47), HALO −2.02% (broad growth, no AI thesis; +4.0%), Agentic Winners −2.30% (the applications; back under water on the year at −2.4%, from −0.12% a week ago, one week after this letter wrote “one ordinary week from a green year”), Agentic Ecosystem −2.39% (the opex layer; +57.1%). Across the Atlantic Euro-AI −3.4% through Thursday, its defense cluster −6.9% and its semiconductor cluster the only green sector at +0.2%. Last week the lightest layer led for a third week and the capex layer was the casualty. This week the lightest layer was the casualty and the capex layer led — by one session.

The control group did not flip this time, and that is the week’s most important internal. For two weeks HALO and the AI layers alternated: an AI unwind, then an AI bid inside a growth sell. This week HALO −2.02%, applications −2.30%, opex −2.39% — all three within forty basis points of each other, all three red — and only the physical layer apart. This was not an AI-versus-growth week. It was a duration week: everything priced on next year’s earnings fell about two percent together, and the one layer priced on this year’s shipments rose. Inside HALO the ladder says the same: Latin America +2.18%, space +2.08%, longevity +1.80% green; destination economy −6.27%, autonomous defense −5.84%, surgical −3.96% red — four green of twenty-three.

Inside the indices — where the week actually happened, and where the month is happening. Inside Rubin the top five are the physical stack, every one: Storage +11.04% (+357% on the year), AI Factory Systems +5.51%, DC Power & Electrical +5.17%, AI Factory +4.93%, Thermal Management +4.79% — twenty-two of thirty-six sub-indices green. The bottom is the buildout’s software: EDA & chip IP −7.76% — last week’s best line — high-speed interconnects −6.12%, wafer processing −4.94%, design −2.15%. Widen the window to the month and the old leaders are back on top of the whole tracker: Storage +17.1%, HBM Memory +15.8%, AI Factory Systems +11.4% lead the thirty-six on a one-month view, with wafer processing −20.3%, fab subsystems −14.2% and interconnects −10.3% at the bottom. The memory-and-storage complex that spent August draining from the highest flow scores on the board — SanDisk, Kioxia, Micron — is the month’s leader by price. Inside the Agentic Ecosystem the bid went to the operators for the first time in four weeks: compute operators +3.69%, the layer’s best line, Asia constituents +2.20%; at the bottom, operations & observability −7.93% — the worst sub-index in the entire four-family system, edge −3.99%, data & memory −3.82%, govern & secure −3.62%. Inside Agentic Winners, two green of nine: Asia +0.95%, megacap gateway +0.61%; control plane −4.36% and Europe −4.36% worst. Thursday’s Daily Pulse argued the next scarcity is permission to act — the governed, observable, reversible path from an enterprise’s own data to a transaction. The market spent this week selling exactly the sleeves that thesis names: observability, control plane, governance. A thesis and a tape disagreeing this cleanly is either an entry or a warning; the print record above says which names the market is still willing to pay in that layer, and it is a short list.

Best and worst week, by name — the mirror, fourth week running, and it favoured the silicon. Across the family’s constituents, the five best: IREN +26.0%, Bloom Energy +20.0%, Soitec +18.8%, SanDisk +17.2%, Dell +14.9% — then Appier +14.5%, Kioxia +13.7%, Viasat +11.8%, Modine +9.6%, Vertiv +9.1%, Micron +9.0%. Nine of the eleven are capex names — storage, power, cooling, the operators — the exact inversion of last week’s list, which was nine software and application names with not one chip. The five worst, with Amphenol excluded from the list as a split artefact in the worker’s data this week: Credo −26.7%, Unimicron −18.7%, MongoDB −17.4%, UiPath −16.3%, Axon −14.2% — then Cadence −14.0%, JFrog −11.3%, Synopsys −11.0% (after its paid window closed Monday), Fastly −10.6%, Palo Alto −10.3%, PTC −10.3%. Fourth consecutive week in which the prior week’s hero list leads the casualty list — Synopsys and Cadence were the EDA leaders seven days ago; IREN was the third-worst name in the system. The medians: capex +0.72%, opex −2.09%, HALO −2.15%, applications −2.38%. Green counts: 67 of 126 in the buildout, 30 of 96 in HALO, 12 of 34 in the opex layer, 11 of 40 in the applications.

The AI Handoff Board — the up-stack run stopped, and the operators turned. The handoff ratios had three consecutive weeks of the stack handing value up. This week: use-against-build −2.70% to 1.5967, beyond-gateways −4.10%, use-against-operate flat (+0.09%) — the applications gave back against the builders. The sharpest line is inside the buildout: verification-against-design +9.52% — test and metrology re-rating against the EDA names that led last week. And the line this letter has watched for a month reversed: operators-against-suppliers +3.26% after −4.79% a week ago — the neoclouds rising against the chipmakers that supply them, for the first time since the capacity trade was marked down in August. Trust-against-execution −0.23%: the security spike of last week went flat, and its names (Palo Alto, Zscaler) were sold.

The hyperscaler cohort — through the shelf on Thursday, back under on Friday. The Mag Pulse board reads the basket at 69.44, +0.54% on the week — 0.09% below the 69.5 shelf that has capped it since spring. It closed through the shelf on Thursday at 70.43 — the first close above it since spring — and was sold 1.41% on Friday to six cents under. Underneath, the composition inverted from last week: Meta +6.70%, Nvidia +5.89%, Tesla +1.53%, Apple +0.08% — and the three hyperscalers red: Alphabet −2.35%, Microsoft −2.69%, Amazon −2.97%. Last week’s re-concentration was the rate-hike-era playbook — the companies that fund themselves. This week the same basket beat equal-weight by 1.3 points while its self-funding trio fell: the money went to the chip and the chip’s largest customer. The shelf test is now a daily-close test; a weekly close through 69.5 has been attempted once and refused once. The December pivot at 62.56 is not on the map.

Compute tightness — the operators’ first green week in four, on the number. For three weeks this letter recorded the neoclouds marked down against the most supply-constrained guide of the cycle. This week: Nebius +8.23%, CoreWeave +3.65%, IREN +26.04% — the best name in the entire system — the compute-operators sub-index the best line in its layer at +3.69%, and the operators-against-suppliers ratio +3.26%. The demand statement did not change; the funding backdrop, on paper, got worse (the belly at a year low, hike odds up). What changed is the payrolls read: a stronger economy is more usage, more inference, more rented compute. The market paid the capacity traders on the cyclical reading of the same number that sold the software. That is one week against three. The book’s tilt watches the ratio, not the week.

The financing architecture underneath it — the special analysis is in production. Last week this letter announced a separate Closelook analysis of the August 10 platforms — the $500 billion of third-party capital that Nvidia, Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman and KKR are mobilizing to make AI factories an investable asset class, with Nvidia reportedly standing behind residual GPU values for up to a quarter of a project. The week added the other half of the picture: Nvidia agreed on Thursday to buy Hugging Face for $12.93 billion — roughly 86 times its revenue — nine months after paying about $20 billion for Groq’s assets, and disclosed supply and capacity commitments of $279 billion, from $119 billion three months earlier. Friday’s Daily Pulse read the two purchases as one ecosystem: the chips that serve existing models and the platform where open models are shared, bolted onto the supplier that finances the factories. The analysis publishes separately on closelook.net; this letter’s interest is narrower — a supplier that owns the model marketplace, the inference silicon and the financing vehicle is a supplier whose customers’ equity is being priced around its balance sheet, and this week the market priced those customers up.

Structural inflation — contained, unchanged, while the curve did everything else. The house composite in the macro lab reads 49, “Contained”, direction flat, structural character “Mixed” — unchanged from last week to the point. A supply-shock impulse registers (oil, Hormuz) and the gauge’s own note says it is not spreading to breadth or expectations. Hold that against a two-year at 4.425% and a September hike above 58%: the market is pricing the Fed on growth, not on inflation, and the gauge agrees with the market’s decomposition. If CPI on Friday disagrees, this paragraph changes first.

Breadth and temperature — narrowing, cooling, then warming into Friday. Equal-weight lost 0.77% against cap-weight’s +0.11% — the second cap-weight week — while the Money Temperature composite went 57 to 49 midweek to 55 on Friday, transition band, the state reading “risk-on rally”. A gauge that cooled eight points into Wednesday’s bond rout and recovered six of them on a hawkish jobs print is reading the same thing the factor pair read: appetite returned on Friday, and it returned narrowly — into the silicon, into the operators, into two megacaps.

The count, restated for the week ahead. Above the 50-day by 1.1%, 3.8% from confirmation, 3.5% from the kill-switch, with a holiday Monday, five scoring windows Tuesday and Wednesday, Oracle Tuesday night, Adobe Thursday night, the ECB Thursday, CPI Friday and the Fed the following Wednesday. The referees are booked, and this week they are macro referees.

1 · This Week’s Action

The global view. The ex-US world index closed the week at 86.41, up 1.15% — a new record close, above the 86.08 mark this letter set last Saturday as the confirmation line. It did not get there in a straight line. Monday closed 85.25, Tuesday 84.65 — under the 85.23 support on a daily close, the deepest dent in four weeks — and then three green sessions: 85.13, 85.95, 86.41. Three weeks of triggering marks in both directions and resolving nothing on the weekly close ended with a weekly close that resolved the upper one. The all-world index closed 161.73, up 0.45%, sixty-six cents under its August 13 record; the S&P gained 0.11%, the Nasdaq 100 0.35%.

The year’s order held and widened. VEU +17.5% for 2026, VT +14.7%, the S&P +12.9% — the ex-US lead over America is back to 4.5 points, from 3.3 last week, because this was a week the world carried. It is the first go-global week in three.

Korea is where the confirmation extended — and it came with the Friday number. Last Saturday this letter recorded the weekly close above 180 as the confirmation of the July breakout and set the new frame: hold above 180 on the weekly closes, 183.46 the week’s high water, 190.11 the sidecar-day cap. The fund closed Friday at 188.87, up 4.81% on the week — through the high-water mark, a dollar and a quarter under the cap — after a week that dipped to 175.80 on Tuesday’s close, under 180, and then recovered every session: 178.86, 180.56, 188.87. Friday alone was worth 4.6%. It is +94.3% on the year in dollars. The Tuesday close under the line and the Friday close over the cap are the same story: the week’s global bid was written on Friday morning at 08:30 in Washington, and the corridor was the place it landed hardest.

Behind it the whole regional board went broad. Last week’s ten green of thirty-five became twenty-eight green of seven red — the fourth breadth flip in five weeks (broad in July, narrow into August 15, broad on August 22, narrow on August 29, broad now). The leaders: Brazil +6.50% led the board, Korea +4.81%, Taiwan +3.97%, Poland +3.77%, Indonesia +3.16% — the corridor and the commodity periphery green at the same time, which has not happened since July. The losers were all one continent: Germany −1.57% the worst line, France −1.10%, the Euro Stoxx 50 −0.99%, Switzerland and EAFE growth the only other red lines among the majors. The best-to-worst spread widened to 8.07 points from 6.75 — a board that broadens while its spread widens is dispersing again, not rotating in place. That is the first structural change in the regional read in a month.

The cross-asset backdrop — the barrel, and then everything else. USO +9.45% was the board’s leader by a distance, and the reason sits in section 2: oil went from 83 to above 91 after the US and Iran exchanged fire on Tuesday and two tankers were reported hit near Hormuz. The bitcoin fund +3.03% was second, the top-20 and top-30 lines +1.22% and +1.13% third and fourth. The bottom: copper miners −3.98%, the long bond −0.81%, the belly −0.65%, gold −0.52%, the dollar −0.35%. Six green, six red. The oil line and the copper line pointing in opposite directions in the same week is the board’s own diagnosis: a supply shock, not a growth signal — the metal that prices growth was sold, the commodity that prices a strait was bought. And the two duration lines, IEF and TLT, red together on a week the dollar also fell: the funding tells this letter tracks did not rotate, they hardened.

The US sectors. Four of eleven closed green and financials closed flat to the cent: energy +2.20%, technology +0.86%, utilities +0.82%, health care +0.17%. The bottom: consumer discretionary −1.96%, materials −1.39%, real estate −1.24%, industrials −1.06%, staples −1.02%. Not the full inversion of the previous two weeks — technology stayed green from last week’s top three, communications fell out of it — but a specific shape: the two rate-sensitive groups (real estate, discretionary) and the two commodity-input groups (materials, industrials) at the bottom, the barrel and the chips at the top. Sunday’s letter owns the tape beneath it; the geography is that Friday’s jobs number sorted the sectors by their sensitivity to the discount rate, and the sort held through the close.

The tech ETFs — the split flipped back. Two Fridays ago this letter named the split — semis down, software up — and last week called it a rotation with a direction inside the stack. This week the direction reversed: thirteen green lines of twenty-one, led by silicon and crypto — digital assets +7.45%, WisdomTree AI +3.20%, SMH +2.51%, XSD +1.99%, ARK +1.93%, the fabless vehicle +1.57% — and the red eight are the layer above the chip, in the exact order it led last week: defense tech −4.85%, software −4.50% (the board’s worst after two weeks as its best), cybersecurity −4.03%, cloud −3.64%. The software-to-semis ratio that bottomed on June 22 and had risen 52% off that low gave back a full week of it on Friday alone; the pair monitor reads the spread at 1.1 standard deviations, closing. Two weeks of software over silicon, one week of silicon over software, and both on the same one-week cadence as every other board. The difference this time is that the reversal has a macro cause with a date on it: payrolls at 08:30 ET on September 4, a duration repricing that hit the long-dated cash flows of software and handed the order book to the cyclical end of the chip complex.

The global sectors. Seven green of twelve, and the top three are the same three that led the US: energy +2.29%, technology +1.65%, financials +1.23%. The detail that matters most is the one this letter has tracked as the tape’s decider for three editions: global financials closed Thursday at 137.00 — a new record — after sitting 0.38% under the old one a week ago, “one green day away.” It got the green day on Wednesday and Thursday, and gave back 0.6% on Friday to 136.20. Recorded, then eased — the same shape as materials two weeks ago, which set its record and un-cleared its February line within five sessions. Materials this week: −0.69% to 115.29, under the 116.54 February line for a second week, with copper miners −3.98% underneath it. The bottom of the global board: consumer discretionary −1.77%, industrials −1.15%, REITs −1.01%.

Was the sector week global, or one region carrying the average? The house Sector Engine decomposes each of the eleven sectors into its four regional legs, and this week’s answer inverts last week’s: emerging markets were the greenest column on the board — every one of the eleven EM cells green (tech +3.4%, energy +2.1%, industrials +2.0%) — while Asia-Pacific developed was red in eight of eleven (tech −2.4%, materials −3.0%, real estate −2.8%; utilities +5.4% the lone strong cell). Tech was green in three regions of four and red only in Japan-proxied developed Asia. And the sharpest single split, once more, is energy — but with the sign flipped from last week: the US cut rose 2.2% while Europe’s energy fell 3.1%, because the global vehicle is where the US barrel lives and the European vehicle is where the European refiner lives. Last week Europe’s energy rose while the global cut fell; this week the exact reverse. The barrel moves; the two wrappers take turns being the one that owns it.

The Global Compass

Regions: the corridor led for a second week — with the periphery alongside this time. Emerging beat developed a third straight week (VWO +1.07% against VEA +0.96%), but the composition changed again: the corridor (Korea, Taiwan, Japan all green, Korea the second-best line on the whole board) and the commodity periphery (Brazil, Poland, Indonesia, Argentina, Norway) rose together, while the developed core of Europe fell. Two weeks ago the EM bid was China and the periphery with the corridor resting; last week it was the corridor with China soft; this week it is both, with Germany and France the only large markets sold. The read this letter has carried — the AI-supply-chain bid is cyclical inside a broadening market — got its clearest single-week demonstration of the summer: a stronger-than-expected US economy is a bigger order book for the corridor, and a higher oil price is a better week for the exporters. Both landed on Friday.

Sectors: risk-on in the emerging column, risk-off in developed Asia, mixed at home. The engine’s cyclical-defensive spreads give the rotation its regime reading by region: EM +0.7% and Europe +0.4% cyclicals over defensives; the US −0.7% — both sides down, cyclicals more — and Asia-Pacific developed −2.2%, the only region where the defensives clearly out-held the cyclicals. That is the week’s most awkward internal: the region whose country funds led the board in dollars (Japan +2.51%) is the region whose local sector cut read defensive. The reconciliation is the yen: three days of yen strength from 160 to 156 flattered every dollar wrapper on Japan while the Tokyo tape itself rotated toward safety. Section 7 takes that apart.

Sectors: the leaders’ bench cleared a line and kept it — for a day. Three weeks of materials read led, lagged, led-to-a-new-high, then cleared-and-un-cleared. This week financials joined the pattern: the record this letter said was “one green day away” arrived on Thursday at 137.00 and eased to 136.20 by Friday. Technology rose 1.65% and remains 4.6% under its June high; energy is its own story, the barrel +105% on the year and the sector +39%; industrials fell 1.15% and sits 4.6% under its August high. A board where the closest challenger takes its record and gives back half a percent the next day is a board that can clear lines. Whether it can hold them is still the open question, and it has been open since materials first asked it three weeks ago.

Stay home vs go global — the US view. The world won the week: VEU +1.15%, VT +0.45%, SPY +0.11% — the first go-global week in three, and it came with the record. The year reads the same way and wider: +17.5% against +14.7% against +12.9%, ex-US ahead by 4.5 points, from 3.3. Both readings, both honest: the trend is intact, and this week it was being sanded back up rather than down. The weekly closes on VEU’s new board — 86.41 the record, 86.08 the old one below it, 85.23 the support that was dented on Tuesday and held on the week — are the levels that say which one is the signal.

Stay home vs go global — the Europe view: the mask flipped a third time. Two weeks ago the euro was bid and the dollar wrapper rose while every European index fell. Last week the euro gave it back and the hedged wrapper beat the unhedged. This week the mask reversed again: the dollar-listed Europe fund fell 0.26% while the euro-hedged wrapper fell 0.87% — the currency was the better half, the equities the worse. Underneath, the exception of last week became the casualty of this one: Germany, which closed the prior Friday at a 52-week high, was the worst line on the whole regional board at −1.57%, France −1.10%, the Euro Stoxx 50 −0.99%; the UK +0.08% and Spain +0.64% the continent’s only green large lines. And the bond market agreed with the order, loudly: the Bund’s ten-year yield traded 3.36% on Tuesday, a level last seen in April 2011, and 3.38% on Wednesday, while France still borrowed dearer than Italy at ten years — 4.21% against 4.14% — and the gap widened to six basis points from four tenths of one. The continent’s two core markets are pointing in the same direction now. Down.

Stay home vs go global — the Asia view: the corridor answered twice. Last week’s question was whether the confirmation, delivered by the won, would hold. The week answered in two halves. Tuesday: Korea closed 175.80, under the 180 line — the Tuesday of the yen through 160 and the bond rout’s second day, the 1997 transmission channel this letter flagged as “not an abstraction” doing exactly what it does. Friday: 188.87, through the 183.46 high-water mark and within $1.24 of the 190.11 sidecar cap. Taiwan +3.97% to 112.18 — a new 52-week high; Japan +2.51% to 98.28, nineteen cents under its August record. The corridor took the Tuesday hit and delivered the Friday recovery, and the Friday recovery had a macro cause in Washington and a currency cause in Tokyo. The re-rating question from July stays answered as far as price can answer it; the new asterisk is that the answer now depends on a US jobs number and a yen that moved four figures in four days.

The engine’s Asia AI spreads put numbers on the corridor’s internal order, and the order reversed: Korea over Taiwan +0.8% on the week — memory leading logic, after last week’s logic-over-memory +2.4% — and Korea +2.3% over global semis for a second week. The memory vehicle itself, DRAM, rose 6.91% to 59.69, through the 58 line it lived under all of last week. Memory diverging from its own region’s confirmation was the corridor’s internal contradiction to watch; this week the contradiction closed, in memory’s favour.

Stay tech vs go broad. Tech led, narrowly at home and clearly abroad. The Nasdaq 100 +0.35% against the S&P’s +0.11%; global tech +1.65% against the world’s +0.45%. Technology the second-best US sector and the second-best global sector; the semis the best tech lines, software the worst. Tech led this week the way it led in the first half of the year — by its silicon — and the aggregate went positive because the chips outweighed the code. The reverse of last week’s internal rotation, same aggregate direction.

Momentum vs defensive — both ends rose, and the pattern held. International min-vol printed a new high on Thursday at 95.16 and faded to 94.78 by Friday, +1.04% on the week — the third consecutive week the defensive end has made a high and not held it into the close. Global min-vol did the identical thing: 128.22 Thursday, a new high, 127.51 Friday, +0.09%. International momentum rose 1.76% to 54.26 — thirty-eight cents under the failed August breakout at 54.64, a fourth week below it but the closest it has been. So the defensive end keeps making highs and giving them back, and the aggressive end keeps approaching its line and not taking it — the same postponement shape, now on a week the world index itself did resolve. On the year momentum still leads min-vol +13.1% against +9.9%; the regime is intact and, for once, the week went with it.

One more pair, awake again. EAFE value +1.49% against EAFE growth −0.38% — value led by nearly two points after last week’s dead heat, and it led on the week the corridor and the commodity periphery carried the board. On the year value keeps the argument, +16.2% against +9.3%. Last week both factor pairs flattened and the rotation ran through groups, not styles. This week both pairs moved and moved the same way — momentum up, value up, min-vol up but fading — which says the money changed risk appetite and neighborhoods at once. That is what a repricing looks like, as opposed to a rotation.

The Closelook letters — where this one sits. 2 · The State

The mechanism, named: a repricing of time, delivered by a jobs report. Put the week in order. Monday and Tuesday belonged to the bond market — Japan’s ten-year closed above 3% on Tuesday for the first time since 1996, the Bund touched its highest since April 2011, the US ten-year ran six straight rising sessions back to its January-2025 prints, and dollar-yen crossed 160 overnight. Wednesday the US ten-year touched 4.81%, its highest since November 2023, and oil went above $90 after the US and Iran exchanged fire and two tankers were reported hit near Hormuz. Thursday the tape had its best day in a month, Waller cut the hike odds to a coin flip, and the yen was already back at 157. Friday, at 08:30 in Washington: payrolls +162,000 against a consensus near 53,000, with 55,000 of upward revisions, unemployment 4.1%, participation 61.6% — the first jobs report of the Warsh Fed, three times the number. The two-year yield jumped to 4.43%; hike odds for September 16 went back above 58%; and the market re-priced duration in one session. The long-dated cash flows lost: gold −1.2% on the day, bitcoin −2%, software −2%, Apple and Microsoft the weakest shares in the Dow. The order book won: chips +3%, Nvidia and Caterpillar the strongest Dow shares, Korea +4.6% in a session. The honest name for the week is not sideways any more. It is a market that was handed a reason and moved on it.

What did choose: two of the quiet tells, in opposite directions. The bond market first. IEF spent the week entirely under the reclaim line — 92.74, 92.10, 92.18, 92.28, 92.25 — never approaching 93.17, and printing 92.10 on Tuesday, a new low for the year. That is the fourth consecutive failed weekly reclaim, and the first of the four that did not even attempt one: three failures from ascending midweek pushes, and then a week with no push at all. TLT held its own floor at 81.2 (82.21, −0.81%, low 81.87 Tuesday). The structure stands — the long bond holds, the belly refuses — and the house’s bond veto over the equity read stays engaged, now on a week the equity read gave its confirmation. Then the yen, which chose the other way. Dollar-yen crossed 160 overnight into Tuesday — through the 159.5 wire, the door this letter had watched since July’s record intervention, on the exact day Morgan Stanley’s desk noted that more than half the intervention’s effect had already faded. Then Bank of Japan board member Hajime Takata said hikes may need to become “continuous” rather than twice a year, and the yen ran three days: 159 Wednesday, 157 Thursday, 156 Friday — its strongest three-day run since the July intervention, and back under the wire it had just broken. Two tells, two directions: the belly of the US curve hardened against the bull, and the funding currency of the carry loop reversed in the bull’s favour. Last week both chose against. This week they split.

The podium turned, twice, and the tape heard both. Thursday: Christopher Waller cut the September hike odds to a coin flip, the ten-year eased, the dollar fell a third day, gold and oil rose. Friday: the number. The reading the previous edition carried as the central tension — hard assets priced for an easing cycle against a central bank leaning hawkish — resolved for a second week in the hawks’ favour, and this time the resolution was the data rather than the podium: gold −0.52% on the week with Friday its worst session, the miners sold, silver −0.33%, the dollar index near 99 after three losing days into the number and then bid on it. Gold spent Tuesday under $400 on the fund and reclaimed it Thursday at 410.22 before Friday took it back to 406.77. Bitcoin +3.96% on the week to a Thursday bar at 81,272 and 80,913 Friday — the coin’s highest close in almost four months, and still inside the 77,000–83,000 zone it has not left. The same input, the same trade, two different scorecards: the metal fell, the coin rose, and neither left its range.

One session, and the pattern with a memory inside it — again. Last week this letter noted that Warsh’s keynote got exactly one session of market time, and that inside that session the old-guard megacaps caught the bid against the day while the capital-hungry end of the AI trade was sold. Friday produced the mirror image with the same discount-rate logic: a hot number, a hike more probable, and this time the balance-sheet giants were the casualties (Apple, Microsoft the weakest in the Dow) while the cyclical end of the same trade — chips, industrials, the corridor — was the winner. Both sessions are the same rhyme with the sign flipped on the growth term: when the discount rate leans up on a policy signal, the market buys duration-light quality; when it leans up on a growth signal, the market buys the order book. One Friday is one Friday. It is also the second time in two weeks the tape has told us it is sorting by duration.

The two hard-asset charts, read the house way. Gold: the impulse out of the consolidation stalled again, this time from below — the fund closed the week at 406.77, printed 396.75 on Tuesday, and never re-approached the August highs. The 4,400 spot falsifier from the last two editions is not on this week’s data sheet — the spot series was not pulled — so this letter records the fund’s levels and lets the count wait a week: 396.75 is the number to hold, 410.22 the number to clear. Bitcoin: the coin spent the entire week inside the 77,000–83,000 zone for a second week — 77,300 Wednesday, 81,272 Thursday, 80,913 Friday — and the fund closed at 45.23, above both the 44 and 44.5 lines it lost on the previous Friday, with a 46.35 print on Thursday. Last week both hedges stood at their falsifiers; this week one reclaimed its lines and the other made a lower low. The pair ratio that had pushed to the bottom of its post-February range kept going: inside the duration repricing, the crypto leg held better than the metal for a second week.

Seoul: the certificate held, and then it was rewritten. The buyback-session low was never revisited, and the Tuesday close under 180 (175.80) lasted one day. The fund walked 180.86 → 175.80 → 178.86 → 180.56 → 188.87 and closed the week through the 183.46 high water. The structural read from three weeks ago — breakout, consolidation above the broken channel, completed double bottom, resistance at 180 — now has its confirmation candle and its first held week, with the cap at 190.11 as the next line. What it also has is a currency it cannot control on either side: last week the won wrote the confirmation, this week the yen’s reversal and a US jobs number wrote the extension. The corridor’s certificate is genuine. It is co-signed.

Europe, two machines, one week on — and the weighing machine moved. The voting machine sold the core: Frankfurt gave back its new high, Paris fell, the Euro Stoxx 50 fell, and the euro was bid, so the dollar wrappers fell less than the hedged ones. The weighing machine, which barely moved last week, moved this week: France 4.207%, Italy 4.144% — the inversion held a third week and the gap widened to six basis points from four tenths. The Bund at 3.354% on Friday from 3.296% the week before; the German ten-year up 19 basis points in twenty-one days. And the sovereign board’s own composite turned back up: SPI +0.43 from +0.35, with the twenty-one-day baseline at −0.08 — the pressure re-heating, and led this time by the ten-year leg (z-score 0.85) rather than the long end. But the direction inside it swapped hemispheres for a second time: last week the US long end rallied and Japan’s sold; this week the US thirty-year sold back to 5.247% from 5.207% while Japan’s thirty-year rallied fifteen basis points to 3.970% from its 4.125% era high — the same week the yen recovered four figures. One sovereign complex inhaling, the other exhaling, and they have now swapped roles two weeks running. The Atlantic has the pressure again.

The macro print. Friday’s payrolls belong to Sunday’s letter in their print-record detail; their geography belongs here, and it was global inside one session. A US number three times the consensus lifted Korea 4.6%, Taiwan 1.9%, Brazil’s fund to the top of the regional board and the corridor’s memory vehicle 6.6% on the day — and sold Germany, France, the software complex and both hedges. The bar has moved again, in the other direction from last week: a fortnight ago the market would not pay for good prints; this week it paid for a good macro number, and paid the cyclical end of every board for it. A market that will not pay for beats but will pay for growth data is telling you where its risk sits: not in the companies, in the discount rate. Section 6 says what follows if the CPI on Friday disagrees.

Hold both halves. The equity boards resolved upward — the world index at a record, financials at a record, the corridor through its high water, breadth back to twenty-eight of thirty-five. The funding tells split — the belly of the US curve hardened for a fourth week, the yen reversed in the bull’s favour, the Atlantic sovereigns re-heated while the Pacific cooled. Sideways is over. What replaced it is a bull market that was confirmed by a tightening impulse, and that is a specific kind of confirmation.

The structural read — the wave count, five years up. Zoom out and the record changes the count’s status without changing the count. From the October 2022 low the house count on the world ex-US reads waves 1 and 2 complete and wave 3 still progressing — price riding the upper half of a four-year channel, and this week’s 86.41 is a new high inside an advance whose projection runs higher. On this count the three-week postponement was a pause in a third wave, and the record close is the pause ending as a third wave should end it: on a breadth flip to broad, with value and momentum both rising. The count keeps its own falsifier — it fails at the channel, not at the record shelf — and the section-4 ladder marks where that argument would begin. The September base case this letter stated last week, about five percent of consolidation, has not been withdrawn by one record close; it has been made harder to reach. Probability, not prophecy.

3 · The Outlook

The three-index read — the money went back up the stack, into the layer that builds. We read the three together because they are three stages of one spend: capex (Rubin Build-Out, what gets built), opex (Agentic Ecosystem, what it costs to run), applications (Agentic Winners, what gets sold on top).

Capex +0.40% on the week — the only green line of the four — and +88.1% on the year. Opex −2.39% and +57.1%. Applications −2.30% and −2.4%. The order of the last two weeks, money leaving the building layer for the selling layer, reversed in one session: the buildout index closed Friday at 1,933.47 after a 2.5% day, from 1,886 on Thursday, while both lighter layers closed the week lower than they started it. Inside the week the buildout was the worst of the three through Wednesday and the best by Friday. That is Friday’s duration split rendered in the house’s own instruments.

The control group agreed with the stack this time — and that is the week’s most important internal. Last week HALO — our growth index carrying no AI thesis — fell 2.25% while applications rose 4.68%: an AI bid inside a growth sell. This week HALO fell 2.02% while applications fell 2.30% and opex 2.39% — the AI stack’s two lighter layers moved with growth, not against it, and only the physical layer separated from the pack. Put the three weeks together: AI unwind inside a flat growth tape, then AI bid inside a growth sell, then growth sell with the AI stack inside it and capex alone outside. The oscillation between “the AI stack” and “everything else” that ran on a one-week cadence has been replaced, at least for one week, by a sort that runs through the stack itself: physical over digital. Inside HALO the week was broad and red — 4 of 23 sub-indices green — with Latin America +2.18%, space +2.08% and longevity +1.80% the exceptions and the destination economy −6.27%, autonomous defense −5.84% and med-devices −3.96% the casualties.

Read the three windows together, because the disagreement is still the signal. On the year capex leads and it is not close: +88.1% against +57.1% against −2.4%. On the month the inversion holds: applications +12.6%, opex +3.2%, capex −2.9%. On the week, the year’s order is back: capex first. Every window now points a different way — the year to the builder, the month to the seller, the week to the builder again — which is what a leadership handoff looks like when it is being contested rather than completed. The tilt this letter announced four weeks ago toward the lighter layers was wrong one week, right the next, and this week it was Friday’s casualty.

The correction lows, re-measured. Applications — which bottomed first, on July 23 — is now +29.3% off its low, from +32.3% a week ago. Capex, off its July 29 low, rose to +13.2% from +12.6%; opex slipped to +14.3% from +17.0%. The spring pattern — the index that bottoms first goes on to lead — is now four weeks confirmed and one week dented. Probability, not prophecy.

The structural line moved the other way. Applications closed 5.3% below its January high — from 3.05% below a week ago; it gave back most of the gap it had recovered. Opex sits 8.1% below its August 13 high, from 5.8%. Capex remains 22.0% below June — from 22.4%, the only layer whose distance to its peak shrank this week, by a hair. The layer that was one ordinary week from going green on the year is now 2.4% under it.

Inside capex: the fab floor lit up, the design lane went dark. The best line in the buildout was storage, +11.04% on the week and +357% on the year, then AI factory systems +5.51%, DC power +5.17%, the AI factory layer +4.93%, thermal +4.79% — the physical plant of the buildout, the racks, the power, the cooling, the drives. The bottom is last week’s top, inverted: EDA and chip IP −7.76% — the design-software lane that led the buildout last week at +5.98% — high-speed interconnects −6.12%, wafer processing −4.94%, design −2.15%. The software of the buildout was sold with the rest of software; the hardware of the buildout was bought with the rest of hardware. And the sharpest reversal on any board a week ago reversed again: HBM memory, last week’s worst at −4.01%, rose 2.83% in the week the corridor’s memory vehicle cleared its line. Twenty-two of thirty-six sub-indices green; the buildout’s breadth was the best in the family.

Inside opex: the compute got bought, the code got sold. The only clear green line was compute operators +3.69% — the layer that owns the machines — with Asia’s constituents +2.20% behind it. The bottom: operations and observability −7.93% — the best sub-index across all four families last week at +5.84% — edge and distribution −3.99%, data and memory −3.82%, govern and secure −3.62%, execution −3.39%. Four of fourteen green. The layer that runs AI split exactly the way tech did, and exactly the reverse of last week: the compute was bought, the code was sold. Foundation models −1.39%, still +712% on the year.

Inside applications: only the two edges held. Two of nine sub-indices green — Asia’s constituents +0.95% and the megacap gateway +0.61%, still the only sub-index positive on the year at +11.2%. The bottom: control plane −4.36%, Europe’s constituents −4.36%, the US constituents −2.95%, enterprise −2.89%, application leaders −2.68%. Last week every sub-index in the layer was green and this letter wrote “no rotation inside the layer; the whole layer was bought.” This week the whole layer was sold except its Asian and megacap edges — which is the same duration sort, applied to the applications layer: the two sub-indices that survived are the two with the shortest-dated cash flows.

The regime gauge. The Money Temperature instrument board closed the week at 55 — down two from 57 a week ago, but up six from the 49 it printed on Wednesday and Thursday, with the regime read “Risk-on rally” at high confidence. The spread underneath is the week in one line: risk appetite +28 and speculation +9, duration −28. Money moved into equities and out of long bonds at the same time. Equities went up, hard assets fell, and the gauge cooled into the middle of the week before warming on the number: the appetite the board reads is the rotation itself, and this week the rotation had a direction.

🟡 Day two of the global bond rout: the US 10-year yield touched 4.81% this morning, its highest since November 2023, Japan’s 10-year holds above 3% for a second session, Germany’s is at a 2011 high and Britain’s is a hair under 5.3%. 1 · This Week’s Action

Where this letter sits. Sunday’s US edition reads this market at index and sector degree — the tape, the levels, the count. This one reads it at name altitude: which companies the money actually went into, which it left, and what the flow behind each is doing. Same market, one rung lower. And this week the order of those two altitudes matters, because the name-level instrument moved first: what this page’s tables said seven days ago is what the index pages reported five days later.

The backdrop, one line. The index spent the week inside a one-percent band and everything underneath it rotated: software broke its June resistance and went green on the year, the Magnificent-7 basket beat the average stock for the first time in five weeks, Nvidia’s eleventh double beat was paid and half refunded, Thursday’s hardware beat-and-raises were sold in Friday daylight on Warsh’s first keynote — and the VIX fell 4.6% to 14.43.

The tech shelf — the split is now the whole board. The five green lines on the tech board are all the layer above the chip: software +5.93% (the board’s best, through its June resistance), cybersecurity +3.91%, cloud +2.82%, internet +2.69%, AI applications +1.25%. The sixteen red are led down by the silicon again: XSD −3.29% the worst line a second straight week, SMH −1.30%. Two weeks ago the software-up-semis-down split was a tell; last week it was demoted to “a line inside one sector”; this week it promoted itself back — as the axis the whole market paid by. The pair board dates it: the software-to-semis ratio bottomed June 22 and is 52% off that low.

The factor view — the style axis went quiet while the layer axis roared. The factor-regime gauge still reads momentum repair attempt below trend — indexed 155.25 against a 50-day at 157.22, the percentile bleeding a second week, 89.7th from 92.3rd. The pair behind it barely moved: SPMO −1.31% against SPLV −0.31%. For this cohort that quiet is information: the violent rotation ran through what companies do — layer by layer — not through how their charts behave. A hypergrowth book gets sold in factor unwinds; it gets re-sorted in layer rotations, and this week was the second kind.

A note before the ledger. The week’s best names in the whole family — Okta +23.0%, Salesforce +22.4%, freee +17.3%, Elastic +16.3%, CrowdStrike +13.8% — are nine-tenths software and applications, with not one chip, cloud operator or HALO name among them. The exact inversion of last week’s list (a copper miner, a genomics company, an energy-drink maker). Third consecutive week in which the prior week’s hero list leads the casualty list — the one-week-lease market at name altitude. The ledger below is read with that in mind.

Our own board — the Rotation Ledger, on Friday’s closes. The Directional Flow scan read this week is fresh: the scanner missed its Friday-night run and this desk triggered it Saturday morning, so the tables below carry Friday’s closes — no as-of asterisk this week. The buckets across 429 instruments: 93 accelerating-up (from 83), 80 reversing-up (from 77), 159 decelerating-up (unchanged — still the largest bucket and still the long warning), 65 flat, 32 accelerating-down. Slightly firmer at the building end than a week ago; the decelerating-up overhang intact. One instrument in 2.4 is building flow; one in thirteen is losing it outright.

The receipts — last week’s table, this week’s tape. This is the paragraph this edition exists for. Last Sunday the fastest-risers table — the engine’s address for leadership before the price board shows it — read: Atlassian +19.0 on five-day flow from a −38 score, freee +13.2, Appier +12.0, Elastic +11.7, Workday +11.6, e.l.f. +11.3, Duolingo +11.1 — “software names and consumer names building flow from negative scores”, published while the tape was still selling everything. This week the market paid that list, nearly line for line: Atlassian +11.7% on the week, Elastic +16.3% with a print paid nineteen percent in daylight, Workday +5.8% on its own beat-and-raise, Veeva +11.6%, Salesforce +22.4%, Okta +23.0%. The flow ledger led the tape by one week. The diary records it the way it records its misses: an instrument that fired correctly once is a data point, and this page will keep publishing the table before the week rather than after it — that is the only honest test.

The strongest trends, confirmed on the medium term. DELL at 204 (+22.0 on the month) — and DELL prints Tuesday after the close, arriving with the top score on the confirmed board; Lenovo 166 (+42.3), BlackBerry 144, HPE 137 (+24.3), Astera Labs 129, ams-OSRAM 124. One row to keep reading carefully: Aehr Test Systems at 218, flat on five days, after a further −20.6% price week — the 252-day regression still has not digested the crash, the standing exhibit of why the change columns lead and the level lags.

The same list, confirmed on the short term. DELL 204, Lenovo 166, HPE 137, Astera Labs 129 — and two names this cohort should notice arriving together: Fortinet 114 (+15.4 on the month) and Palo Alto 106 (+31.0). The firewall pair joining the confirmed board in the week the security sub-index led the entire four-family system is the flow and the price agreeing in real time.

Where new leadership shows up first — the fastest risers. The list that got paid, updated: Atlassian +19.0 on five days (21-day build now +70.4), freee +15.6, e.l.f. +13.0, Appier +11.9, Duolingo +11.3, Workday +11.1 (+44.4 on the month), Veeva +11.0. Still software plus consumer, still no chip or tool on it — the same shape one rung further along, with the prices now attached.

And the draining side. Z.ai −25.0 (score 170), KLA −18.5 at a score of −304 — the deepest acceleration-down in the universe — Kioxia −17.3 from a 293 score, SanDisk −15.5 from 284, Applied Optoelectronics −14.6, EchoStar, Fluence, Aixtron. The memory complex has now spent three weeks draining from among the highest scores on the board, and the price keeps following the drain: SanDisk −6.96% this week, Micron −3.51%, the DRAM vehicle under its 58 line all five sessions. Last edition wrote “the flow was early” about storage; this week the flow stayed early, in the same direction.

2 · The State

The four buckets, briefly. New readers: we cut the growth trade into functional indices rather than sectors — capex (Rubin Build-Out, what gets built), opex (Agentic Ecosystem, what it costs to run), applications (Agentic Winners, what gets sold on top), and HALO as the control group carrying no AI thesis at all.

The week’s ladder: applications +4.7%, opex +1.6%, capex −1.8%, HALO −2.3%. On the year: capex +87.1%, opex +60.9%, applications −0.1%, HALO +6.0%; Euro-AI +0.4% on the week, +32.9% on its year. The lightest layer led for a third week — all nine of its sub-sleeves green, and the layer now one ordinary week from a green year for the first time since January — while the control group fell.

The control group flipped, and this cohort should read it twice. Last week HALO held flat while the AI layers bled: an AI unwind, not a growth unwind. This week HALO fell 2.25% while the applications rose 4.68%: an AI bid inside a growth sell — the exact mirror, on the same one-week cadence as everything else. For a hypergrowth reader the two weeks together say something neither says alone: the market is not deciding between AI and growth. It is oscillating between them weekly, and the only thing bought in both weeks was the application layer. Inside HALO the casualties were last week’s heroes — longevity −3.2% after leading, speculative −7.4%, space −7.3% — with only Asia-Pacific and payments green.

The floors, scored — the asymmetry reversed a second time. Last edition: the results floor (the neocloud payments) deflated while the cheque floor (Workday’s reported takeout interest) held. This week both halves moved again. The challenger floor kept giving way: Nebius −4.5% to 209.18 — a third consecutive red week — CoreWeave −4.1%, IREN −15.4%, with the operators-against-suppliers handoff ratio down 4.8%: the capacity traders repriced against the very supplier who just capped his own year at 70% for lack of supply. And the incumbent floor got results under it: Workday printed a beat-and-raise, was paid 5.8% in Friday daylight, closed the week +2.35% at 204.72 — the floor built on a cheque now has a quarter’s numbers standing beside it, and an +11.1 five-day flow build behind those. The scoring window closes Tuesday; the mechanical verdict follows the letter’s rule, not its enthusiasm.

Inside the buckets — the sub-sleeves put names on the week. Inside the applications: Control Plane +7.87%, Enterprise +5.84%, Application Leaders +5.51%, and Megacap Gateway +3.38% — green again after two red weeks, still the only sleeve positive on the year. No internal rotation; the whole layer was bought. Inside the operating layer, the security stack got paid outright: Identity, Trust & Governance +13.66% — the best sub-index in the entire four-family system — operations & observability +5.84%, govern & secure +5.74%; at the bottom, compute operators −4.02% and foundation models −3.40% against their +723% year. Inside the buildout the best line was EDA & chip IP +5.98% — the buildout’s own software — while HBM Memory, last week’s only green sub-index, fell 4.01% into the bottom five. The layer axis runs through every bucket at every altitude.

The buckets against their highs. Applications closed 3.05% below the January record — from 7.4% below a week ago; it recovered half its remaining gap in five sessions — and +32.3% off the July 23 low, extending. Opex sits 5.8% below its August 13 high, +17.0% off its low. The buildout remains 22.4% below June, the only layer whose peak recedes. The spring pattern — the index that bottoms first leads — has now held for four consecutive weeks, in the layer that bottomed first.

The structural read — the count, from the US letter, as the gate. QQQ closed back above the 50-day it sat on to the cent (716.43 over 712.06); 746.16 confirms, 694 voids, neither traded; the five-day chart resolved an ascending triangle upward through 713. No invalidation; the referees print daily next week.

3 · The Outlook

The tells from last edition — scored. The storage call stayed right: flow led, price followed again (storage sleeve −6.2% inside the buildout, SanDisk and Kioxia still draining from 280–290 scores). The cybersecurity watch resolved as the week’s biggest hit: named two editions ago as the opex sleeve that structurally avoids the biggest-customer-becomes-competitor problem, held last week as “logic held, price did not” — this week the price arrived everywhere at once: Identity +13.66% the system’s best sub-index, the trust-against-execution handoff ratio +4.48%, Okta and CrowdStrike the family’s two best names, the firewall pair joining the confirmed flow board. The neocloud retention call stayed right in the other direction: the payments that died stayed dead, a third week.

The regime gauges, one paragraph. The Handoff Board: use-against-build +3.85% to 1.6007, use-against-operate +3.04%, beyond-gateways +3.19% — a third consecutive week of the stack handing value up — with trust-against-execution +4.48% the sharpest line and operators-against-suppliers −4.79% the sourest. The Money Temperature composite: 57, up four, second consecutive warming week, transition band — the gauge reading the rotation itself as appetite. The house inflation composite: 49, contained, direction flat, while the 30-year rallied to 5.207% into the buyback window.

Three signposts for when the thesis comes back. The hypergrowth thesis is not being refuted this month; it is being repriced and re-sorted — and a repriced thesis returns on evidence, not on mood. These are the three signposts this letter is now watching for the return leg, stated so they can be scored:

One — the model-release delta, as the scaling-law gauge. The capability gap between each frontier model generation and the last is the whole trade’s first principle: if the deltas keep coming, the compute demand curve stays convex and the buildout’s 70% supply-capped year is a floor, not a peak. If the deltas compress, every layer below the applications reprices. The gauge is public — release cadence, benchmark jumps, and whether each new model moves deployment (agents shipped, seats expanded) rather than demos.

Two — old-GPU rental prices, as the pent-up-demand gauge. Scarcity pricing at the frontier is contractual and opaque; the previous generation’s spot rental price is the honest meter. If demand genuinely exceeds supply by the margin the supplier claims, last-generation capacity holds its rate — overflow demand has nowhere else to go. If old-GPU rates roll over while new capacity ships, the “much greater than 70%” demand claim was thinner than the call made it sound. This signpost is also the residual-value question underneath the August 10 financing platforms — the one Nvidia is now reportedly underwriting up to a quarter of project values against, and the subject of the special analysis the US letter announced. One number, three constituencies: the operators’ equity, the platforms’ credit, and the thesis itself.

Three — incremental margins, not operating margins, as the monetization gauge. Operating margins tell you what a business has been; the incremental margin — how many cents of each new revenue dollar reach profit — tells you what it is becoming, and it is the number that separates scarcity sellers from everyone else in this stack. The pricing power of the scarcity sellers is eye-watering precisely there: when supply is the cap, each marginal unit ships at terms the buyer cannot negotiate. Watch the incremental margins of the constrained layers against the unconstrained ones as supply catches up through 2027 — the layer whose incremental margin holds while volume doubles is the layer the thesis returns through. The print record will carry the arithmetic per name as the season’s numbers land.

The week ahead — the referee’s calendar, name by name. Monday: five scoring windows close — Nvidia, Synopsys, and this cohort’s two paid software prints, CrowdStrike and Salesforce, graded at the close. Tuesday: six more — Workday’s results floor gets its mechanical verdict, Rubrik’s zero-flats card measures a beat-and-raise that was sold thirteen percent — plus Dell prints after the close carrying the top score on the confirmed flow board, and the MongoDB card publishes. Wednesday: Broadcom, the silicon’s referee, plus Snowflake and GitLab. Friday: the first Warsh-era payrolls. The September frame from Saturday’s letter governs the month: worst seasonal, a hike more probable, about minus five percent the base case — anything better constructive.

4 · Growth With No Tech Inside — the second pillar, first test week

The tape, day by day. The quietest index week of the summer sat on top of the loudest rotation. Monday −0.29% while the hard assets started giving back their Warsh-week gains. Tuesday +0.32% — the day the world ex-US index printed a record close and both min-vol funds made highs they would not hold. Wednesday +0.02%, the market flat to the cent into Nvidia’s print after the bell. Thursday +0.66%, the widest move of the week, as the supply-capped guide was paid: Nvidia +8.74%, the software beats from Wednesday night paid alongside it. Friday −0.23% on Warsh’s first keynote as chair — the hard assets sold, Thursday’s hardware beats sold harder, and the old-guard megacaps caught a bid against the whole tape.

Five sessions inside a one-percent band: the S&P +0.47% to 769.35, the Nasdaq 100 +0.42% to 716.43 — back above the 50-day average it closed on to the cent last week — and the equal-weight S&P −0.44%. The VIX fell 4.6% to 14.43 in a week the market sold clean beats. Everything that happened this week happened underneath the index again. For the first time in five weeks, what happened underneath favoured the top of it.

The sector read — the inversion, second week running. Three green of eleven, and they are last week’s bottom: communications +1.43%, technology +1.30%, financials +1.08%. Last week’s green three — health care, energy, materials — are in this week’s bottom five: XLV −1.98%, XLE −1.51%, XLB −0.67%. Utilities flat, staples and discretionary red, real estate −1.33%. Last week the sentence was “a board with the capex taken out and the non-tech growth put in”. This week the board put half the tech back in — the half that writes code — and took the non-tech growth back out. Two full inversions in two weeks is not leadership. It is a tape auditioning leaders and dismissing each after five sessions.

The sector rankings — relative strength, three lenses. Our sector-RS board reads the rotation’s speed. Technology, tagged Weakening last week with a negative 21-day read, has turned: +1.9% against the index over 21 days — the tired leader is repairing — though still −4.5% over 63: the quarter has not forgiven it yet. Health care keeps the quarter crown (+12.8% over 63 days) but the month is fading (+0.9%) — the same shape its breadth prints below. Energy +2.6% and +9.7% stays quietly strong on both lenses; financials −1.8% on the month against +10.9% on the quarter; materials near flat on both. And utilities is collapsing on every lens: −8.1% over 21 days, −5.5% over 63 — last on the board, in the week the long end rallied. The rotation is not just fast. It is now fast in both directions at once — tech repairing while its replacement leaders fade.

Underneath the four focus sectors — the breadth flipped with the boards. The dispersion pages show the members behind each ETF, and this week they show the rotation reaching the internals. Health care: still 76% of members above their 50-day — but 4 five-day highs against 24 five-day lows, a −20 differential, the exact inversion of last week’s 23-against-3. The sector that was “broad, not carried” spent this week broadly retreating. Technology: 50% above the 50-day, 14 five-day highs against 15 lows — balanced, no longer the narrowest sector on the board, its members firming as the ETF led. Materials 3 highs against 8 lows; financials 11 against 18 with 88% still above the 100-day — the medium-term structure intact, the week’s tape against it. One week ago the strong sectors were strong underneath and the largest sector was narrow underneath. This week the largest sector is the balanced one and last week’s leaders are printing lows. The internals rotate as fast as the surface now.

The factor read — repair attempt, below trend, percentile still bleeding. The factor-regime gauge holds its label from last week — momentum repair attempt below trend — and the numbers say the repair has not landed: the momentum-over-low-vol spread indexed at 155.25 against a 50-day at 157.22, still below trend, at the 89.7th percentile of its distribution — down from 92.3rd last week and 94.6th two weeks ago. The pair behind it went quiet rather than violent: SPMO −1.31% against SPLV −0.31%, the twenty-day rates of change now +2.05 against −1.51 — momentum winning the month — while the sixty-day still reads −5.36 against +4.71, the defensive leg owning the quarter. Saturday’s letter found the identical shape internationally: momentum three weeks under its failed breakout, min-vol making highs on Tuesday and fading them by Friday. On both continents, both ends of the factor spectrum keep refusing the baton. In a week when sectors and layers rotated violently, the style axis went still — which says the rotation is running through what companies do, not how their charts behave.

The axis, one week on — it inverted, and the destination is the story. Last week this letter re-drew the tape’s axis from software-vs-semis to tech-vs-everything-else, with the ex-tech cuts at three-year highs. One week later the axis inverted: the Nasdaq 100 ex-technology gave back 1.35% from that high while the Nasdaq 100 gained 0.42%; the S&P ex-tech lost 0.44% against the S&P’s +0.47%. The everything-else trade lasted exactly as long as every other leadership this tape has auditioned — five sessions.

Run the pairs explicitly, because each one carries its own sentence. Nasdaq 100 ex-tech against the Nasdaq 100 tech sleeve: −1.35% against +0.62% — the ex-tech cut that made a three-year high last week trailed its own tech sleeve by two points this week. S&P 500 ex-tech against the tech sector: −0.44% against +1.30% — same signature at index scale. The year-to-date order still reads the other way (the ex-tech cuts trail their parents on the year), which means this week did to the ex-tech trade exactly what the previous week did to tech: interrupted it without overturning it.

But the money did not go back to where it left. It went to two specific addresses inside tech, and to neither of the others. Software: IGV +5.93%, the best line on the tech board, through the 107.70 resistance that had capped it since June 1 — and, at +3.60%, green on the year for the first time since the winter. The last major sleeve underwater for 2026 surfaced this week. The pair board dates the move: the software-to-semis ratio bottomed on June 22 and is 52% off that low — a two-month trend this week extended, not a one-week bounce. And the balance sheets: the Magnificent-7 basket +2.66% against the equal-weight’s −0.44%. The silicon got neither half: XSD −3.29%, the worst tech line a second straight week, SMH −1.30%, the chip index within one percent of its floor. The axis is no longer tech-vs-everything-else, and it never went back to software-vs-semis as an internal affair. It is now the layer axis: code and balance sheets in; silicon, operators and last month’s defensive growth out.

Underneath it, the participation statistic that defined the last month broke: the defaults beat the average stock for the first time in five weeks — the Mag-7 basket +2.66% against equal-weight −0.44%, cap-weight above equal-weight in both indices. For four consecutive weeks this letter tracked the largest names trailing a resilient average stock and asked whether it was rotation or distribution. This week supplied the answer neither reading predicted: re-concentration. The money that left the defaults came back — on a hawkish keynote, into the names that finance themselves.

Inside tech — the split is now the whole board. Five green lines, all of them the layer above the chip: software +5.93%, cybersecurity +3.91%, cloud +2.82%, internet +2.69%, AI applications +1.25%. Sixteen red, led down by the silicon and its adjacents: XSD −3.29%, DAPP −2.21% (with the coin’s fade), ARKK −1.88%, fintech −1.60%, nuclear −1.52%, quantum −1.49%. Two weeks ago the split was one week old and this letter called it a tell. It is now a three-week trend with a dated bottom, a broken resistance, and the year’s first green print on the software sleeve. The layer axis runs through this board most visibly of all.

2 · The State

The sorting rule found its axis: the market pays the layer, not the beat. Last week the rule narrowed to “nothing gets paid”. This week it split cleanly in two — by layer, not by quality. The software prints were paid, and paid large: Okta +23.0% on the week on a double beat with raised guidance, Salesforce +22.4%, Elastic +16.3% (+19.3% in Friday daylight alone), CrowdStrike +13.8%, ServiceNow +12.6%, Workday +5.8% on its own beat-and-raise. The hardware and infrastructure prints were charged, whatever they reported: Rubrik, a clean beat-and-raise, sold 13.1% in Friday daylight; Marvell −10.3%; IREN −12.5% — and Fabrinet, the entry-premium exhibit of two weeks ago, bled a further 5.1% without printing anything. Same week, same tape, same quality of report; opposite verdicts, sorted entirely by what layer of the stack the reporter lives in.

Nvidia’s print is the rule’s largest exhibit. The eleventh consecutive double beat — revenue $96.0 billion against roughly $92 billion — with a fiscal-2028 outlook the CEO framed as supply-capped: demand above 70% growth, shipping at 70%. The market’s answer, in two sessions: paid +8.74% on Thursday to 227.98, half refunded on Friday, −4.57% to 217.55. A +1.32% week for the guide that would have been worth ten percent in April. The scoring window closes at Monday’s close, and it closes on a number the market has already argued itself into and half out of. On this record the printed columns were foregone; the two-day reaction shape — pay, then refund half on the macro — is the new information, and it rhymes with everything else the week did.

The 70% number, taken seriously. Fiscal 2028 runs roughly across calendar 2027, so what Wednesday’s call delivered was a growth forecast for next year, given tonight — and its construction is the unusual part. Huang’s exact framing: “Even though our demand is much greater than 70%, our supply allows us to confidently deliver 70%.” That is not a demand forecast with execution risk; it is a shipping schedule with demand overflow — the cap is the fabs, the packaging and the power, not the order book. The CFO added that customer forecasts “point to our growth doubling next year.” Read against this letter’s four layers: a supply-capped 70% year at the supplier is the strongest statement the capex thesis has ever received — and the market’s response was to pay the applications layer, half-refund the supplier, and keep selling the operators who rent the constrained compute. Either the market is looking through 2027 to what comes after the catch-up, or it is repricing the discount rate on everything that needs financing before it gets there. Friday’s keynote argues for the second reading; Monday’s scoring close and Wednesday’s Broadcom print will grade it.

The chart pick, scored and staged. Robinhood, published two Fridays ago at 95.10, scored +9.6% at its one-week checkpoint — recorded in the edition’s own scoring note, next checkpoint late September. Friday’s third edition published Synopsys pre-open with the machine block showing its Directional Flow still negative and accelerating down against a seven-driver fundamental repair — and the stock promptly fell 4.8% in the daylight session, the entry printing below the reference. The record keeps both: the pick that ran and the pick that opened red. That is what a published track record is for. And one lane of the thesis got independent confirmation this week: the EDA sub-index inside the buildout was its best line at +5.98% — the design-software lane leading the index it sits in, the same week its flagship name was charged. Layer paid, name charged: the rule again, one level down.

The veto, scored at the close: failed a third time — from the highest push yet. IEF spent midweek comfortably above the line — 93.51 on Tuesday, the strongest reclaim attempt of the three — and closed Friday at 92.85. Three consecutive weeks now: push through 93.17 midweek, sold back by Friday, each push from higher than the last. TLT held its floor again (82.88 against 81.2, +1.01% — the best line on the cross-asset board). The long end actually rallied into the buyback window — the 30-year finishing at 5.207% from 5.275% — while the belly kept getting sold on Fridays. The bond market has now declined to sign the equity resolution three weeks running, each refusal more emphatic in its intraweek shape, and Saturday’s letter adds the Pacific half: the yen closed through its wire for the first time, and Japan’s 30-year printed another era high. The veto stands, and its company got worse.

The macro print was a podium, not a datapoint. Warsh’s first Jackson Hole keynote as chair: the 2% vow, prices first, the bet that AI aids labor supply — with Hammack calling for hikes the same day and the July minutes’ three dissents behind them both. The direction had exactly one session to trade, and that session sold gold 1.9%, the miners near four, and bid the dollar and the balance-sheet megacaps. One session is one session; the question it opens — blip or September template — is section 4’s, and the market’s first answer was the rate-hike-era playbook to the letter: Amazon +3.97%, Alphabet +1.74%, Microsoft +1.68%, Apple +1.63%, Meta +1.21%, while Nvidia gave back 4.57% and the beat-and-raises were sold. When the discount rate leans up, the market buys the companies that fund themselves and sells the ones that need the capex cycle. Friday was a clean specimen.

The count — back above the average, both lines still live. The Nasdaq 100 reclaimed the 50-day it closed on to the cent last week: 716.43 against 712.06. The map is unchanged — 1-2 off the April low, wave 3 ongoing, 746.16 the confirmation (4.1% above), 694 the kill-switch (3.1% below) — and the week moved the index from the average to just above it without approaching either line. Saturday’s letter carries the five-year count on the world ex-US — wave 3 still progressing, the stall reading as a pause — and the two counts agree: postponement inside an advance, not a topping structure. Both counts also carry the same caveat: the falsifiers are close enough to answer quickly.

The same chart at four focal lengths. The house grid runs the count through its windows: the three-year view carries the wave structure — 1 and 2 complete, wave 3 ongoing inside its channel; the year-to-date view shows this summer’s 1-2 sequence against the 746 line; the one-month view frames the index between 746 above and the 701 August shelf below; and the five-day view shows the week’s own micro-structure — an ascending triangle pressing against the 713 line, resolved upward into Friday’s close at 716. Four windows, one reading: an advance pausing at descending focal lengths, with the smallest window the only one that resolved this week — and it resolved up.

3 · The Outlook

The four indices — the money went back into the thesis, and picked its lightest layer. The family printed the layer axis in one row: Agentic Winners +4.68% (the applications — all nine sub-indices green, and at −0.12% YTD one ordinary week from going green on the year for the first time since January), Agentic Ecosystem +1.59% (the opex layer; +60.9%), Rubin Build-Out −1.77% (the capex layer; +87.1%), HALO −2.25% (broad growth, no AI thesis; +6.0%) — with Euro-AI +0.4% across the Atlantic, +32.9% on its year.

The control group flipped, and that is the week’s most important internal. Last week HALO held flat while the AI layers bled — an AI unwind, not a growth unwind. This week HALO fell 2.25% while the applications rose 4.68% and the opex layer rose too: an AI bid inside a growth sell — the exact mirror. Two weeks, two opposite verdicts, same one-week cadence as every other board. What was bought in both weeks: the application layer. What was sold in both: nothing — which is the sideways market in one sentence. The index carrying no AI thesis, which last week was the house expression of the axis, spent this week as its casualty: longevity −3.2% after leading, speculative −7.4%, space −7.3%, only Asia-Pacific and payments green.

Inside the indices — where the week actually happened. Inside Rubin the best line was EDA & chip IP +5.98% — the buildout’s software — with design +3.55% and the chip architects +2.34% behind it, while HBM Memory, last week’s only green sub-index, fell 4.01% into the bottom five in the same week Korea’s fund confirmed its breakout in dollars. The bottom is unchanged in character: DC construction −6.69%, storage −6.18%, fab subsystems −5.15%, testing & metrology −5.04%. Inside the Agentic Ecosystem the security stack got paid outright: identity, trust & governance +13.66% — the best sub-index in the entire four-family system — operations & observability +5.84%, govern & secure +5.74%, agentic security +3.72%; at the bottom, compute operators −4.02% and foundation models −3.40% against their +723% year. Inside Agentic Winners, everything: control plane +7.87%, enterprise +5.84%, application leaders +5.51%, and megacap gateway +3.38%, green again after two red weeks, still the only sub-index positive on the year. No rotation inside the layer. The whole layer was bought.

Best and worst week, by name — the mirror, third week running. Across the family’s constituents, the five best: Okta +23.0%, Salesforce +22.4%, freee +17.3%, Elastic +16.3%, CrowdStrike +13.8% — then ServiceNow +12.6%, Ferrotec +11.9%, Atlassian +11.7%, Veeva +11.6%, Synopsys +11.2%. Nine of the ten are software or application names; not one chip, not one cloud operator, not one HALO name — the exact inversion of last week’s list, which was nine HALO-and-applications names with no software. The five worst: Aehr −20.6%, AST SpaceMobile −15.4%, IREN −15.4%, Applied Optoelectronics −14.9%, Everpure −14.0% — then Tempus AI −11.9%, last week’s best name in the entire system at +39.5%, now sixth-worst. Third consecutive week in which the prior week’s hero list leads the casualty list. The medians say it without names: applications +2.93%, opex +1.65%, capex −1.62%, HALO −2.18%. Green counts: 34 of 40 in the applications, 45 of 126 in the buildout, 26 of 99 in HALO.

The AI Handoff Board — a third week up-stack, with a security spike. The handoff ratios: use-against-build +3.85% to 1.6007, use-against-operate +3.04%, beyond-gateways +3.19% — the applications pulling away from builders and operators for a third consecutive week. The sharpest line is new: trust-against-execution +4.48% — the security layer re-rating against the workflow layer it protects, the Okta-CrowdStrike week expressed as a ratio. And the one going the other way is the operators again: operators-against-suppliers −4.79% — the neoclouds falling against the chipmakers that supply them, which is what a capacity trade looks like when the market stops paying for capacity.

The hyperscaler cohort — the streak broke at the shelf’s door. The Mag Pulse board reads the basket at 69.07, +2.66% on the week — 0.62% below the 69.5 shelf that has capped it since spring, from 3.2% below a week ago. Underneath: Microsoft +6.27%, Meta +5.11%, Apple +3.35%, Amazon +3.02%, Oracle +2.99% (+18.3% on the month), Nvidia +1.32% through its own print, Alphabet +0.51%. The hyperscaler cohort beat QQQ by 2.24 points. Four weeks of “the defaults trail the average stock” ended in one: the basket beat equal-weight by over three points, and the question this letter has carried — rotation or distribution — received the third answer: re-concentration into the balance sheets, on a hawkish podium. The shelf at 69.5 is now the working test: a weekly close through it would say the defaults are leading again for the first time since spring; a rejection would file this week as a defensive crowding into size. Either way, the December pivot at 62.56 has stopped being the live end of the map.

Compute tightness — the operators’ third red week, against a supply-capped guide. The demand signal could not have been louder: the chip supplier itself capped next year’s growth at 70% by shipping capacity, with demand above it. The operators who rent that compute were sold anyway — Nebius −4.5%, CoreWeave −4.1%, IREN −15.4% — their third consecutive red week, and the operators-against-suppliers ratio fell 4.8%. Price and thesis now disagree in the sharpest form yet: the tightest supply statement of the cycle, from its most authoritative source, against a funding market that keeps marking the capacity traders down. One of them is early. The book’s tilt has already chosen which.

The financing architecture underneath it — and a coming deep-dive. The operators’ bleed is, at bottom, a funding question, and the funding side moved structurally this month. On August 10 Nvidia announced compute-financing platforms with Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs and KKR — over $500 billion of third-party capital to be mobilized for AI factories, with the explicit aim of turning Nvidia compute and full-stack AI infrastructure into an investable asset class — long-duration, usage-linked revenue streams packaged for the capital that owns pipelines and toll roads, with Nvidia reportedly standing behind residual GPU values for up to a quarter of a project’s value, the exact risk that has kept banks away from lending against chips. BlackRock’s chief executive compared it to the birth of mortgage-backed securities in the 1970s. Hold that against this week’s tape: the market is repricing the equity of the capacity traders in the same weeks the industry is building the machinery to move that capacity onto credit — off the neoclouds’ balance sheets and into structured vehicles. Whether that machinery rescues the operators or disintermediates them is, in this letter’s view, the most consequential open question in the whole stack — and it gets its own treatment: a special Closelook analysis on the August 10 platforms — how AI infrastructure and GPUs become a financeable asset class, who carries the residual risk, and what the mortgage-securitization analogy implies for both directions — is in preparation and will publish separately on closelook.net.

Structural inflation — contained, while the long end rallied. The house composite in the macro lab reads 49, “Contained”, direction flat — unchanged. The 30-year rallied to 5.207% into the buyback window while the belly failed its third reclaim; the gauge keeps saying the long end’s problem is supply, not inflation, and this week the long end traded like a market that agrees — until Friday’s keynote reminded it that the short end has its own opinion. Warsh’s prices-first framing against a Contained structural gauge is the fall’s macro argument in miniature.

Breadth and temperature — the reversal week. Equal-weight lost 0.44% against cap-weight’s +0.47% — the first cap-weight week in five — while the Money Temperature composite warmed a second consecutive week, 57 from 53, still transition. Equities crept, hard assets fell, the gauge warmed anyway: what it is reading is rotation-as-appetite — money moving between layers at full speed rather than leaving. Participation narrowed this week by choice, not by damage: the average stock fell half a percent while the top of the index absorbed the inflow.
