1 · This Week’s Action

The week in one line: the whole AI stack was sold — the builders and the operators from Monday, the applications on Friday. Capex (Rubin Build-Out) −13.45% to 1,813.50; opex (Agentic Ecosystem) −14.16% to 1,533.41; applications (Agentic Winners 40) −0.50% to 937.97. The builder had five of its 130 members up on the week. The runner between them, which made a record a week ago, had none of its 34 up. The applications index was up about 1.5% through Thursday and lost 2.0% on Friday alone.

Friday was the day the winners were sold — all of them. Up to Thursday this looked like last week again: chips out, software in. ServiceNow closed 6.1% higher on Thursday while TSMC’s careful words on 2027 sent the chip fund lower. Then on Friday the selling reached the companies that had been the shelter. Palantir −7.2%, CrowdStrike −7.0%, ServiceNow −4.4%, Oracle −4.6%, Meta −3.7%, Alphabet −2.5%, Microsoft and Amazon −1.9% each. The software fund IGV lost 4.8% on the day, the chip fund SOXX 4.1%, the Nasdaq 100 fund QQQ 2.5%. It looked like broad profit taking across everything that had worked in AI this year, into a weekend with the big reports still ahead.

The line on the Nasdaq 100 broke. The editor’s chart below draws the line from the 30 March low through the August low. It ran at about 729 on Friday; QQQ closed at 709.80, −5.52% on the week, under it for the first time since the line was drawn. The levels underneath: 704 (the mid-September low), 691, 674 and 660 (the summer low). The chip fund closed 24.7% under its June high; the tech sector fund XLK lost 7.7% on the week.

Where the money went. Not out of the market — into the parts of it with no AI story. Consumer staples (XLP) +5.0% to their highest close since 3 March, health care (XLV) +3.45% with a one-year closing high on Thursday, energy (XLE) +4.9%. The equal-weight S&P 500 rose 0.5% while the Nasdaq 100 fell 5.5%.

The ten worst of the week, across all three indices — the optics, the test tools, the neoclouds. Applied Optoelectronics −31.1%, Aehr Test Systems −28.4%, Vicor −28.0%, PDF Solutions −27.9%, DigitalOcean −26.8%, Coherent −25.5%, Cohu −25.5%, Lumentum −25.3%, Kioxia −25.3%, Fabrinet −25.3%. CoreWeave and Nebius fell 25.2% each. The ten best — software sold on price earlier in the year: CoStar +8.9%, Intuit +7.4%, freee +7.2%, Kingdee +6.8%, Appier +6.8%, Dassault Systèmes +6.2%, Salesforce +5.1%, Veeva +4.8%, SAP +4.4%, Canon +3.9%. Intuit and CoStar are still down about half on the year; this was a bounce in the cheapest names, not a turn in the group.

2 · The AI Board — where each layer stands

The house AI Board puts the three layers side by side, with the Directional Flow score under each — a measure of whether a stock’s trend is gaining or losing force. Its sentence of the day: most Rubin names are losing strength (107 of 126); most Ecosystem names are getting stronger (22 of 34); most Winners names are getting stronger (33 of 40).

Read that sentence with care this week, because two thirds of it is behind the price. The flow score is built from trends over weeks; it does not move in a day. The Ecosystem lost 14.2% in a week and every one of its members fell, and the flow still counts 22 of 34 as gaining force — its average is now turning down. The Winners lost 2% on Friday, and the flow still counts 33 of 40 as stronger, because their trends were improving until Thursday. The builder’s flow is the only one that has caught up: 12 stronger, 107 weaker, the average down 17.5 points in a month. Last week the flow led the price. This week the price moved faster than the flow can, and the honest reading is that the board will show Friday’s break over the coming week, not today.

Inside each layer. In the builder, no sector rose: the best was gases, chemicals and consumables at −1.4%, the worst high-speed interconnects −19.5%, storage −19.4%, testing and metrology −19.2% — the year’s winners (storage is still +233% on the year). In the operators, foundation models −19.3%, runtime and API gateways −17.4%, compute operators −16.2%; even the best, data and memory, fell 11.9%. In the applications, application leaders +1.5% was the best sleeve; the megacap gateway — the hyperscalers and the chip leader — −2.5%, the control plane −1.9%.

The NVIDIA ecosystem book (Jensen) fell 14.0% on the week, 5.6% on Friday.

3 · The Three Functional Indices — index, sectors, stocks

We read the three together because they are three stages of one spend: capex (what gets built), opex (what it costs to run), applications (what gets sold on top). HALO, the growth index with no AI thesis, is the control.

Rubin Build-Out — capex

−13.45% to 1,813.50, −1.8% on Friday; 26.8% under the June 22 high, +76.4% on the year. Five of 130 members up, the median member −14.36%. It was a steady week of selling, not one crash: Korea’s memory scare on Tuesday, hot inflation on Wednesday, TSMC on Thursday, and the whole complex on Friday. ASML’s record quarter on Wednesday — with demand, it said, outrunning supply in 2027 and 2028 — and TSMC’s record quarter with a 66.4% gross margin on Thursday did not stop it. Both were strong; both were sold. The question the market is asking is not this year’s numbers but how long the spending lasts.

Agentic Ecosystem — opex

−14.16% to 1,533.41, −5.8% on Friday; a record on 9 October, and every point of the 14.2% from that record came this week. +55.4% on the year. Not one of 34 members rose; the median −14.06%. DigitalOcean −26.8%, CoreWeave −25.2%, Nebius −25.2%, Fastly −23.3%, IREN −23.3%. The companies that rent out computing power and sell access to models — the part of the stack that borrows most to grow — fell hardest. The best of the week fell too: Teradata −0.8%, Dynatrace −3.8%, Equinix −3.9%.

Agentic Winners 40 — applications

−0.50% to 937.97, −2.0% on Friday; −4.2% on the year, 7.0% under its January high. Twenty of 40 members up, the median +0.25%. Up to Thursday the group was doing what it did last week — gaining while the builders fell. Friday took the week away. The losers were the names that had carried it: Palantir −11.0% on the week, Oracle −9.3%, Tempus AI −8.8%, Nvidia −6.6% (the index holds it as the gateway to the stack). The winners were the cheap software platforms: CoStar, Intuit, freee, Kingdee, Appier.

4 · The Stack, Instrument by Instrument

The supply gauges — cooling hard. The four supply-side gauges of the AI Build-Out family: the Taiwan AI Supply Pulse at 74 (95 a week ago), compute spot tightness 49 (54), the Semicap / Test Pulse 27 (67), the Memory / HBM Pulse 15 (32). The equipment and memory gauges read 21-day stock momentum, so they follow the price — but the speed of the fall is the point: the memory gauge has gone from 55 to 15 in two weeks.

The demand gauges — holding. The house Agentic Demand index reads what companies say about AI demand on their calls and in their usage. It reads 75.0 across eight live pulses — agentic security 92.2, enterprise workflow 90.7, enterprise infrastructure the coolest at 61.5. This is the test for the fear that ran through the week — that the build-out is a repeat of the fibre glut of 2000, with capacity built far ahead of use. In 2000 the use never came. Today the demand side reads above the supply side, and the week’s news supported it: Anthropic’s numbers, reported from its pre-IPO meetings, put third-quarter revenue near 16.8 billion dollars and 1.70 dollars of revenue for every dollar of computing (FT). A gap would look like the demand index falling under 70 while the build-out held. This week it was the other way round.

The handoff — up the stack, by falling less. The house AI Handoff Board tracks money moving from one layer to the next. Use over build +15.0%, use over operate +15.9%, design over physical +5.4% — the applications fell far less than the builders and the operators. Verification over design −8.7%: the test-tool makers fell hardest of all.

The credit tape — the borrowers pay more. The house AI Credit Stress tape reads stress at the project-funded rung — CoreWeave, Nebius, the data-centre builders — at 89 of 100, against 41 for debt-funded Oracle and 8 for the cash-funded hyperscalers. Oracle’s 2055 bond yields 8.17%, 67 basis points more than twenty days ago; high-yield spreads widened 53 basis points in the same time. The stocks that fell 25% this week are the ones whose funding costs are rising.

1 · This Week’s Action

The winners were sold — all of them, and hardest into Friday. It started with the chips and did not stay there. The chip fund SOXX fell 11.8% to 493.39, its eighth down day in a row on Friday. Software joined on Wednesday and again on Friday: the software fund IGV fell 7.4%, 4.8% of it on Friday alone; CrowdStrike −17.3%, Palo Alto −18.3%, Snowflake −16.8%, Palantir −11.0%. And the hyperscalers went with them: Oracle −9.3%, Amazon −4.7%, Alphabet −3.1%, Microsoft −1.1%, with Alphabet −2.5%, Meta −3.7% and Microsoft −1.9% on Friday alone. Nvidia fell 6.6% to 214.13. This was not one sector’s bad week. It was broad profit-taking in everything that had carried the year.

The index and the market under it. The S&P 500 fund fell 1.97% to 763.25. The Nasdaq 100 fund fell 5.52% to 709.80. But the equal-weight S&P rose 0.49% — the average stock was up in a week the index was down two percent and the Nasdaq five. The Nasdaq 100 without its tech stocks rose 0.82% to 98.95, its second week up; the tech half of the Nasdaq 100 fell 9.15%. Small caps fell 3.05%.

The tech bull channels broke. Since the 30 March low every dip in the tech funds stopped on a rising line, drawn from that low through the late-July low. This week QQQ closed under it — the line runs at about 729 to 732 now, the fund closed Friday at 709.80. Wednesday and Thursday it closed right on the line, at 728.95 and 728.00; Friday’s 2.5% drop took it through. The tech sector fund XLK closed at 183.47 against a line at about 193; the chip fund SMH at 539.79 against about 601. Software is the one that kept its spring line — IGV at 104.34 sits above the line from the April low through the June low, near 100 — but it fell through the steeper line it had followed since August.

The eleven S&P 500 sectors

Seven of eleven up — in a week the Nasdaq fell 5.5%. Consumer staples +5.02% to 87.62, their highest close since 3 March. Energy +4.86%. Health care +3.45% to 176.71, after a one-year closing high of 177.19 on Thursday. Materials +3.01%, utilities +1.93%, financials +1.44%, real estate +1.32%. Communications −0.05%, consumer discretionary −0.35%, industrials −0.88% — and technology −7.70%, the only sector with a real loss and still +27.4% on the year.

The shape of it: defensive growers. Staples and health care are the companies that keep growing when the economy slows — food, soap, medicine. Friday’s Pulse put it in one line: out of chips, into pills and soap. Since the 6 October record health care is up 6.0% and staples 6.0%, technology down 6.3%, chips 12.7%. Against the S&P this week staples beat it by 7.0 points, energy by 6.8, health care by 5.4; technology trailed by 5.7.

Breadth — health care and energy strong, tech thin. In health care 51 of 59 members closed above their 5-day average and 42 above the 50-day, with 17 new five-day highs against one low. In energy 16 of 21 are above the 50-day. In financials 55 of 76 are above the 5-day, 30 above the 50-day — up from none above the 20-day two weeks ago. Technology is the mirror: 26 of 72 above the 50-day, 45 new five-day lows against 7 highs.

The Nasdaq 100, cut six ways

The week: the Nasdaq 100 without tech +0.82%, the S&P 500 without tech +1.04%, the S&P without the Magnificent Seven −1.65%, the S&P −1.97%, the Magnificent Seven fund −3.38%, the Nasdaq 100 −5.52%, the Nasdaq tech sector −9.15%. On the year: Nasdaq tech +30.8% (from +44.0% a week ago), the Nasdaq 100 +15.5%, the S&P +11.9%, the S&P without tech +6.7%, the Nasdaq without tech −0.4%. Thirteen points of the tech half’s year went in five sessions.

The counterpoint: the Nasdaq without tech is green. QQXT closed at 98.95 — its low of the year was 95.56 on 1 October, and it closed at 99.26 on Thursday, the best close since the low. In the week the tech half fell 9%, the other half of the same index rose. That is rotation inside the Nasdaq, not a sell-everything week: the money that left Nvidia, CrowdStrike and Oracle went to the drug makers, the retailers and the food companies in the same index.

The editor’s chart: the Nasdaq 100 without tech over one year — at 98.95, two weeks off its early-October low near 95.5 and still under its August high near 105.

Momentum against low volatility — the turn. Momentum fell 6.79%, low volatility rose 3.24%. The ratio dropped below its 50-day average — from an indexed 166.4 to 150.2 — and the factor board now reads “defensive rotation — low-vol leading, regime-change watch.” It is still in the 82nd percentile of its range. One week does not end a momentum regime; it does mark the first real crack in it.

The tech ETFs we carry

Nineteen of twenty-one red. XSD −12.48%, SMHX −12.14%, SOXX −11.80%, SMH −10.53%, cybersecurity −10.16%, software −7.39%, cloud −6.78%. Only defence tech (SHLD +2.69%) and gaming (ESPO +0.65%) rose. The software-over-semis ratio still rose 3.5% — software fell less — and is 48% above its June low, but this week software was not the shelter it was a week ago; it was the second wave of the selling.

The names in one line each. The software names that rose were the out-of-favour ones — Intuit is still down 48% on the year; the ones that had led the year were sold.

The four indices: Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq 100, Russell 2000

The S&P 500 −1.97%, the Nasdaq 100 −5.52%, the Russell 2000 −3.05%. The Dow held up best: it gained 1.1% on Thursday and was still green at midday on Friday while the Nasdaq fell, because it holds more banks, health care and consumer names and fewer chips. The S&P is 2.0% under its 6 October record, the Nasdaq 6.6% under its own. The Russell is 6.4% under its 50-day average.

The Treasury curve, one month to thirty years

The ten-year yield fell from 5.24% to 5.10% on the week, the thirty-year to about 5.43%, the two-year to about 4.72%. It fell in a week of hot inflation numbers: consumer prices rose 3.7% on the year in September, core 2.6%, both above forecast (Wednesday); producer prices jumped 1.3% in the month (Thursday). The bond market looked past them — the ten-year touched 5.24% on Wednesday and fell to 5.10% on Thursday, as consumer spending outside food and energy stalled. The long-bond fund TLT rose 2.65% to 80.05, with a gap higher on Thursday on the heaviest volume of the month.

The editor’s read of the bond chart: TLT may have made an initial breakaway gap. On Thursday the fund opened at 80.47 after closing at 78.89 the day before, and the day’s low of 79.93 never came back to Wednesday’s high of 79.01 — a gap of almost a dollar, on 86.7 million shares, the heaviest volume of the month. Friday traded down to 79.67 and closed at 80.05, so the gap is still open. That close sits on the two lines on his three-year chart: the falling line from the 29 June high (87.45) and the 79.9 floor the fund held in 2024 and 2025 and first closed under on 24 September. 74 is the line below. His point: a breakaway gap starts a move; if the move is real, a second gap higher — a running gap — may follow soon, and the next test is a close clearly above the falling line. All four Treasury funds gapped higher on Thursday and held it on Friday: TLH (10–20 years) at 94.09 on its own falling line, IEF (7–10 years) at 90.42 back above its 89.9 line with 93.5 next, IEI (3–7 years) at 114.24.

The dollar

The dollar fund slipped 0.34% to 28.92 while the yields fell. A softer dollar and lower long yields in the same week is what a market pricing slower growth looks like.

2 · The State

The week, in order. Monday: Korea’s market, back from two days off, fell 3.5% to catch up with the US chip selling; in New York memory and optics were sold again — Lumentum −7.7% and SanDisk −6.5% at midday — while Meta rose 3.8%. Tuesday: the Kospi broke its 18-month uptrend; J&J and Citi fell after beating, JPMorgan recovered after missing; the chip fund closed back under its 50-day. Wednesday: hot inflation, the ten-year at 5.24%, the chip fund −3.7% and 20% under its June high, software −2.4%, Oracle −7.5%, AMD −4.9%; health care +2.0% the only shelter. ASML reported a record quarter and said it is sold out into 2028. Thursday: TSMC beat but called itself “prudent” on 2027; the chip fund −2.0%, Dell −7.7%; software was bought, ServiceNow +5.4%; the ten-year fell to 5.10%; health care +2.5% led again. Friday: the whole complex sold — chips −2.1% for the eighth day, software −4.3%, CrowdStrike, Snowflake and Palo Alto −7% — while the Dow stayed green and the money stayed in staples, banks and utilities.

The mechanism, named: profit-taking in the winners, not a flight from stocks. A sell-everything week takes the equal-weight S&P down with the index; this one did not. The S&P fell 2%, the average stock rose. The money went from the places it had made the most this year — chips +86% on the year before the week, the AI builder index +103% — to the places it had made the least: staples, health care, energy. Two things pushed it. The AI supply chain got its first hard question about 2027: TSMC prudent, an earlier report that put OpenAI’s revenue nearer 50 billion dollars than 70 billion. And a peak in rates with slower growth behind it — the ten-year off its 5.31% high of 5 October in a week of hot prices — favours companies that grow without a strong economy.

The channels, said plainly. The rising line from the 30 March low held every dip for six and a half months: in June, in July, in September. A break of it after the chips fell 25% from their June high is not a crash; it is the end of the easy part of the trend. What it changes is the stance — a dip that breaks the line is not bought the same way as a dip that holds it.

The chips — the second leg. SOXX 493.39: 24.7% under its 22 June high, 8.2% under its 50-day, 6.1% above the 465.00 July low. SMH 539.79, 19.3% under its June high; XSD 462.03, 28.7% under, back at its July level. The July low is the line the whole chip complex now trades against.

Software — from shelter to seller. IGV 104.34 — 7.4% under last Friday’s 112.67, which was its best close of 2026; 1.5% under its 50-day. CLOU 28.07, 6.8% under its 30.11 high of last Friday. CIBR 98.82, 10.2% lower on the week. A week ago software was making highs while the chips fell. This week it fell with them.

The three-index read — capex and opex both sold, applications flat. Capex (Rubin Build-Out) −13.45%, 26.8% under its June high, +76.4% on the year. Opex (Agentic Ecosystem) −14.16%, from a record a week ago — not one of its 34 names rose. Applications (Agentic Winners 40) −0.50%, after −2.0% on Friday. The global view. The ex-US world index closed the week at 81.54, down 1.55% — a second weekly close under 82.85, the structural line this letter has carried since the summer. The path: Monday 82.49, Tuesday 82.61, Wednesday 81.66, Thursday 82.00, Friday 81.54. The index sits 5.6% under its September 4 record of 86.41 and 12.1% above its spring low of 72.75. The all-world index fell 1.88% to 156.82. The S&P 500 fund fell 1.97% to 763.25, 2.0% under its October 6 record; the Nasdaq 100 fund fell 5.52% to 709.80, 6.6% under its own.

America still leads the year — by less. The S&P 500 fund is +11.9% for 2026, the all-world index +11.2%, the world ex-US +10.9%. A week ago America led by 1.6 points; this week by 1.1. A week in which the American tech complex was sold hardest narrowed the gap without closing it. The house cointegration monitor still lists the VEU/SPY pair as breaking, the spread now 2.0 standard deviations below its mean, from 2.6.

The AI winners, sold in order. Read the week by what was sold, and when. Monday and Tuesday it was the chip makers: memory and optics first — Lumentum, SanDisk, Micron — and on Tuesday Korea’s Kospi fell 5.5% and broke the uptrend line it had held since April 2025. Wednesday the software joined: hot September consumer prices (3.7% on the year, the core rate 2.6%), BlackRock’s research arm cutting US stocks to neutral, and the software fund down 2.4% the same morning. Thursday Seoul fell another 7.6% with a trading halt, Tokyo 4.9%, Jakarta 10.8% on an MSCI downgrade warning. Friday the whole complex went: chips for an eighth losing day, software −4.3% — CrowdStrike, Snowflake and Palo Alto about −7% — and the hyperscalers too: Meta −3.7% on the day, Alphabet −2.5%, Microsoft −1.9%, Amazon −1.9%. This was not a verdict on one part of the AI trade. It was profit taking across all of it, from the parts that had risen most.

The scale of it. The chip index fell 11.4% and the chip majors fund 10.5%; equal-weight chips 12.5%; the memory vehicle DRAM 18.8%. Software fell 7.4% (IGV), the cloud fund 6.8%, the AI fund AIQ 6.9%, cybersecurity 10.2%. Of the hyperscalers on the week: Oracle −9.3%, Amazon −4.7%, Alphabet −3.1%, Meta −1.3%, Microsoft −1.1%; the Magnificent Seven fund −3.4% — after a record close on Tuesday. Global tech lost 8.3% and closed at 137.37, 10.2% under its October 6 record.

The tech uptrend broke. Since the March low, the tech complex has risen along a line that every pullback respected — the July drop included. This week three of the four funds closed under it. The Nasdaq 100 fund closed at 709.80 against a line at about 732 — 3.1% under; US technology (XLK) at 183.47 against 193 — 5.1% under; the chip majors at 539.79 against 601 — 10.1% under. Software is the exception: IGV’s own spring line sits at about 100, and the fund closed at 104.34, 4.3% above it. A broken uptrend does not say how far the decline runs. It says the trend that carried the index since March has ended — and that the next rally has to prove itself from below the line.

Where the money went — staples and health care, everywhere. The money did not leave the market; it changed seats. US consumer staples rose 5.0% to 87.62, their highest close since 3 March; US health care rose 3.5%, and on Thursday closed at 177.19, its highest close of the past year. It was not one country’s trade: the global staples fund rose 5.2% and global health care 3.6%, and the house Sector Engine has staples up in America (+5.0%), Europe (+3.2%) and developed Asia (+4.0%), health care up in all three (+3.5%, +4.6%, +5.3%). Seven of the eleven S&P 500 sectors rose while technology fell 7.7%. A tech week this bad with seven sectors green is a rotation, not a flight.

Asia paid for the sell-off. Korea’s fund fell 15.1% to 150.44; the Kospi lost 14.5% to 5,668 and the tech-heavy Kosdaq 10.9%. The Kospi is now 37.8% under its June high; the fund 31.4% under its own — and still +54.7% for 2026. Taiwan’s fund fell 7.0% to 106.26, 10% under its October 5 record; the Taiex 4.5%. Japan: the Nikkei −5.4% to 65,324, the TOPIX only −1.0% — Tokyo sold its chip names, not its market. Indonesia’s fund fell 16.4% after MSCI warned it may treat the market as standalone; Jakarta fell 10.8% on Thursday alone, its worst day since 1998. China’s A-shares −3.9%, the large caps −1.2%, Hong Kong flat.

The regional board — fifteen green of thirty-five, and none of them in the chip corridor. The top: Switzerland +4.18%, Mexico +4.16%, India +3.54%, Britain +3.20%, EAFE min-vol +3.14%, Norway +2.55%, Poland +1.69%. The bottom: Indonesia −16.40%, Korea −15.12%, Taiwan −7.04%, Brazil −3.93%, China A-shares −3.89%, Japan −3.05%, emerging markets −2.89%. The best-to-worst spread was 20.6 points. Brazil gave back part of last week’s 14% ahead of its 25 October runoff.

The cross-asset backdrop — oil up, the long bond up, the metals down. Three green of twelve: oil +9.15% to 161.76 — a dime under its September high close — the long bond +2.65% and the belly +1.14%. The red: copper miners −6.73%, the Nasdaq top-30 fund −6.44%, silver −5.97%, the Nasdaq 100 −5.52%, the US top-20 fund −2.54%, the S&P −1.97%, the bitcoin fund −0.86%, gold −0.67%, the dollar −0.34%. The volatility index closed at 19.99, up 35% on the week.

The US sectors — seven of eleven green, technology alone at the bottom. Staples +5.02%, energy +4.86% — at its highest close of the year — health care +3.45%, materials +3.01%, utilities +1.93%, financials +1.44%, real estate +1.32%. Red: communication −0.05%, discretionary −0.35%, industrials −0.88% and technology −7.70%. The equal-weight S&P rose 0.49% while the S&P fell 1.97% and the Nasdaq 100 5.52% — the average stock beat the index for a second week, this time by two and a half points.

The tech ETFs — two of twenty-one green. The only green lines were defence technology +2.69% and gaming +0.65%. Everything else fell, software with silicon: WisdomTree AI −14.54%, digital transformation −12.57%, XSD −12.48%, the fabless fund −12.14%, SMH −10.53%, cybersecurity −10.16%, quantum −9.81%, IGV −7.39%, CLOU −6.78%. Last week software rose against the chips. This week it fell with them.

The global sectors — the defensives and energy led. Seven of eleven green: energy +5.18% (a record close of the year at 62.98), staples +5.16%, health care +3.64%, utilities +1.86%, financials +1.15%, real estate +0.74%, discretionary +0.73%. The red: technology −8.32%, industrials −0.88%, communication −0.53%, materials −0.24%. Global tech lost the 149.74 June high on Monday’s close and did not see it again.

Was the sector week global, or one region carrying it? Technology fell in America (−7.7%), emerging markets (−7.6%) and developed Asia (−2.5%) — and rose in Europe (+2.1%). Europe’s tech leg is mostly software and services; the emerging leg is Korea’s and Taiwan’s chips. The US-minus-Europe tech spread was −9.8 points, the widest in the matrix. Europe was green in all eleven sectors, America in seven, developed Asia in seven, emerging markets in none.

The Global Compass

Regions: developed over emerging. VEA −1.22% against VWO −2.89% — the reverse of last week. The emerging basket carries Korea, Taiwan and India’s opposite week; the corridor won the argument by losing more.

Sectors: defensives over cyclicals, in every region. The engine’s cyclical-minus-defensive spread was −6.4 points in the US (cyclicals −3.0%, defensives +3.5%), −3.0 in developed Asia, −3.0 in emerging markets and −1.8 in Europe. On the year the US spread is still +11.1 points; on the month it has turned to −4.8. Two weeks of defensives in a row is a pattern worth writing down.

Sectors: the leaders’ bench. Technology 137.37, 10.2% under its record. Industrials 188.09, 9.1% under August. Financials 129.03, 5.8% under the September 3 record, a sixth week under the 134.55 line. Materials 108.82, an eighth week under the February line.

Stay home vs go global — the US view. America lost the week but kept the year: SPY −1.97%, VT −1.88%, VEU −1.55% — the first week in six in which the world ex-US beat America. On the year: +11.9% against +11.2% against +10.9%.

Stay home vs go global — the Europe view: everyone up. In local terms: the STOXX 600 +2.09% to 644.74, the DAX +2.13% to 25,623, the CAC +1.97% to 7,957, the IBEX +1.54%, the Euro Stoxx 50 +0.50% — and outside the euro the FTSE 100 +3.13% to 10,882, 0.3% under its February high close, and Switzerland’s SMI +4.29%. The dollar-listed Europe fund rose 1.46%, the euro-hedged one 0.02% — the hedged fund holds the euro area’s exporters, chip equipment among them; the unhedged one also holds Britain and Switzerland, which led. The French fund made its lowest close in a year on Monday, 41.24, and ended at 42.12. The euro made a new low of the year on Monday too, 1.1160, and closed the week at 1.1236.

Europe split — the defensive markets led. Switzerland +4.2%, Britain +3.2%, Norway +2.6%, Poland +1.7%, Germany +1.5%, France +1.5% — against the Netherlands −2.6% and Austria −0.5%. The Netherlands is Europe’s chip-equipment market, and it fell with the chips. Switzerland and Britain are heavy in pharma, food and consumer staples — this week’s winning sectors, in index form.

Stay home vs go global — the Asia view: the corridor broke, India rose. Korea: EWY −15.12%; the Kospi −14.5%, with a trading halt on Thursday. Taiwan: EWT −7.04%; the Taiex −4.5% to 47,111, 5.4% under its October 6 record. Japan: the Nikkei −5.4%, the TOPIX −1.0%, the dollar fund −3.05% with the yen at 157.99. India: the Sensex +3.1% to 74,729, up from the low of the year it made on 8 October; the Nifty +2.8%; the dollar fund +3.54%. Australia +1.0%. India, the market that trailed all year because it owns almost no AI hardware, rose for the same reason this week.

Stay tech vs go broad. Broad won again, by more. The equal-weight S&P +0.49% against the S&P’s −1.97% and the Nasdaq 100’s −5.52%; the world −1.88% against global tech’s −8.32%. On the year tech still leads: global tech +30.8% against the world’s +11.2% — from +42.7% a week ago.

Momentum vs defensive — min-vol takes the year. International momentum fell 1.40% to 51.57; international min-vol rose 3.14% to 94.52, global min-vol +1.68%. On the year min-vol now leads, +9.6% against +7.5% — a week ago momentum led by 2.7 points. Momentum outside America is heavy in the chip exporters; min-vol is staples, utilities and health care.

One more pair: value over growth. EAFE value +1.48% against growth −1.18%. On the year value leads +11.1% against +4.4%.

The Closelook letters — where this one sits. The house thesis, compressed: the stock market is a growing system at the aggregate level in which most constituents slowly fade while a small group massively outperforms — and that group changes dynamically; it never stays static. Own the aggregate, know the current winner group, watch for the rotation. Last week the rotation ran inside the winner group, from the builders to the sellers. This week the winner group as a whole was sold, and the money went to the sectors that had been left behind all year. This letter reads the map; Sunday’s US letter reads the tape and its levels; Sunday evening’s Hypergrowth letter reads the names.

2 · The State

The mechanism, named: broad profit taking in the winners, and a rate peak underneath. Put the week in order. Monday: Seoul came back from its holiday and sold its memory makers; in New York memory and optics fell again — Lumentum −7.7%, SanDisk −6.5% at midday — while a few platforms rose. Tuesday: the Kospi −5.5%, under 6,000 at the low, after China’s CXMT flagged a new memory chip; the bank reports began, and good numbers met a cold reception. Wednesday: ASML reported a record €11.7 billion quarter and said it is sold out into 2028 — and the chip fund still fell 4.5%, to 20% under its June high; September consumer prices rose 3.7%, above forecast; BlackRock’s research arm cut US stocks to neutral; Barclays wrote that companies are putting only about 5% of their IT budgets into AI, and Dell fell 11.3%; software joined the selling. Thursday: TSMC posted a sixth record quarter and called itself “prudent” on 2027; producer prices jumped 1.3% in a month — and the ten-year yield fell to 5.10%. Friday: the whole complex sold, the hyperscalers included, while staples, banks and utilities rose.

The pattern under the dates: the best news of the season — ASML sold out, TSMC at a record — did not lift the chips, and the hottest inflation prints of the autumn did not lift the yield. A market that sells good news and ignores bad data is a market that is repositioning, not reacting. The repositioning had one direction: out of what had risen most, into what had not risen at all.

The rate peak, a second week. The ten-year closed at 5.09% on the house sovereign board (5.10% on the index), from 5.24% a week ago and 5.31% at the close on 5 October. The long-bond fund rose five days in a row from its 77.11 low close and finished at 80.05, +2.65%, its best week in a year; IEF 90.42, +1.14%. This happened in a week with 3.7% consumer inflation and a 1.3% monthly jump in producer prices — the bond market looked through both, to slower growth ahead. The odds of another Fed hike on 28 October fell from about a third on Thursday to about one in six on Friday.

The rate map — one sentence each. America: 5.09% on the ten-year, down 15 basis points on the week. Britain: 5.38%, 5.85% on the thirty-year — still the highest long yield on the board. Japan: 2.93%. Germany: 3.44%. France: 4.79%, Italy 4.48%. The French ten-year pays about 135 basis points over the Bund, from 138 — narrower by three, and still 31 basis points more than Italy; over 21 days the French ten-year has risen 33 basis points while the German one fell 5. The house sovereign pressure index slipped from 0.04 to −0.09, the equal-weight ten-year at 4.28%, from 4.36%.

The consequence — the map, adjusted. This letter’s positioning, restated: this diary stays away from mainland Europe’s core, and from France in particular; Greece and Poland stay the exceptions. This week adds a nuance, not a change: the defensive markets — Switzerland and Britain — did what defensive markets do in a week like this one. The book holds Switzerland and has had it under review for weeks; a 4% week does not change why. This is a diary’s positioning, not advice.

Oil — the other winner. The oil fund rose 9.15% to 161.76, a dime under its September 15 high close of the year; Brent traded above 107 dollars on Monday. US energy closed at its highest of the year, 68.24, and global energy at 62.98. Oil at these levels is a cost for every economy that imports it — Europe and most of Asia — and a reason the bond market’s calm about inflation can be tested.

The hard assets — the metals fell, the coin held. Gold fell 0.67% to 382.01 — a third week under the 391.74 support it broke at the end of September. Silver fell 6.0%, copper miners 6.7%. Bitcoin closed Friday at 82,046, −0.6%; it closed above 83,000 only on Sunday and Tuesday. The fund held 46.15, above the 44.5 line. A week of risk reduction that did not reach the coin is worth noting — it had already lost its floor the week before.

Seoul: through every line. The fund walked 170.11 → 166.56 → 159.83 → 156.22 → 150.44. Last week this letter set 190.11 as the cap, 183.46 as the old high water and 180 as the line. All three are now far above the price. EWY is 31.4% under its June high and +54.7% on the year — the best market on the board in 2026, and the one that has given back the fastest.

Taiwan: TSMC’s record, and the market fell anyway. EWT closed 114.27, 113.46, 110.94, 109.14, 106.26. TSMC’s quarter was the best in its history; the company’s word for 2027 was “prudent”, and the market heard the word, not the number.

Europe, the voting machine and the weighing machine. Euro-AI’s chip architecture layer fell 20.1% and semi equipment 10.9% — while defence rose 9.6%, enterprise AI and data 3.6%, medtech 1.3% and industrial AI 1.3%. Europe’s AI index fell 2.66% in a week the American ones fell 13–14%; Europe’s AI exposure is mostly its own software and its machines, and the machines were the only part that fell hard.

The macro print. Three numbers: 3.7% consumer inflation, a 1.3% monthly jump in producer prices, and a ten-year yield that fell 15 basis points anyway. The first two say inflation is not finished. The third says the bond market expects growth to slow enough to finish it. For the equity map that meant one thing this week: the money moved to the companies whose profits do not depend on the next year of AI spending — and to the countries that own them.

The structural read — the editor’s count moves on: wave 4 is forming. Last week this letter carried the editor’s preferred count on the world ex-US: still inside the third wave of the advance from the October 2022 low, with a fourth-wave correction as the alternative. This week the editor has updated the count. The world ex-US is forming wave 4 — in the editor’s words, a typical complex consolidation. On the redrawn five-year chart, wave 1 ran from the 2022 low into early 2023, wave 2 corrected into late 2023, and wave 3 carried the index to this year’s top area — the record close of 86.41 on 4 September. The dashed path now drawn for wave 4 points to the mid-70s; the fifth wave after it to a new high above 90. The solid rising line from the 2022 low, at about 67 today, stays the line under the whole advance.

What changed, and what did not. What changed: the editor no longer reads this autumn’s pause as a step inside a running third wave. A second weekly close under 82.85 and the week’s lows near 81 fit the slower count better. What did not change: the count is still bullish on the larger trend. A fourth wave is a correction inside an advance, not the end of it — and the typical fourth wave is exactly what this autumn has looked like so far: sideways, overlapping, tiring to watch. It ends when the price stops making lower highs and lower lows; the chart’s dashed path puts the low in the mid-70s, the spring low of 72.75 and the rising line below it. (Editor’s count, 10-17.)

The all-world index — the same pause, seen closer. The editor reads VT the same way: the sideways stretch since August is the same kind of complex consolidation. On the one-year chart it is plain to see. VT made its high close of 162.39 on 13 August and has moved sideways since, between 156.82 and 162.39 on closing prices; Friday’s 156.82 is the lowest close of that range, 3.4% under the high. Below it are the 29 July low of 152.22 — the floor before the August breakout — and the spring low of 134.19. On the year VT is +11.2%. The world index is testing the bottom of its range, not yet out of it. (Editor’s read, 10-17.)
