1 · This Week’s Action

The global view. The ex-US world index closed the week at 85.18, down 1.42% — five cents under the 85.23 support this letter set last Saturday as the weekly-close falsifier. The record close of 86.41 lasted one session: Tuesday 86.06 (Monday was Labor Day in New York), Wednesday 85.39, Thursday 84.30 — the low of the move, under the support by almost a dollar — and Friday 85.18, a recovery that stopped a nickel short of the line. Last week’s edition said a weekly close under 85.23 “ends a record, not a drift.” On the letter’s own standard, that is what this week’s close did. The all-world index closed 159.94, down 1.11%, 1.5% under its August 13 record; the S&P fell 0.77%, the Nasdaq 100 0.57%.

The year’s order held but narrowed. VEU +15.8% for 2026, VT +13.4%, the S&P +12.1% — the ex-US lead over America is 3.7 points, from 4.5 last week, because this was a week the world gave back more than America did. It is the first stay-home week in two, and it came with the record’s reversal.

Korea is where the certificate was tested — twice, and it held on the week. Last Saturday this letter set the frame: hold above 183.46 on the weekly closes, 190.11 the sidecar-day cap. The fund did both things the frame did not ask for: Wednesday it closed 190.78, through the cap on a daily close; Thursday it closed 182.78, under the high water on a daily close, a 4.2% session. Friday’s 188.72 put it back between the lines — −0.08% on the week, flat to the cent, above 183.46 on the weekly close and under 190.11. In Seoul the week was not flat: the Kospi rose 3.3% in won, from 6,687 to 6,910, touched 7,172 on Tuesday, closed above 7,000 on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, and finished the week below it. The dollar wrapper had paid for Monday’s 4.2% Seoul session on Friday September 4, in New York, before Seoul opened — which is why the local index is up three percent on the week and the fund is unchanged. +94.1% on the year in dollars.

Behind it the regional board inverted for a fifth time in six weeks. Last week’s twenty-eight green of thirty-five became four green of thirty-one red — the narrowest board since this letter began tracking the breadth flips in July. The four: Thailand +0.98%, Poland +0.98%, Brazil +0.87%, Japan +0.28% — two periphery lines, one commodity exporter, and the one developed market whose currency was the story. The bottom was three continents wide: New Zealand −4.62%, Switzerland −4.48% the worst large market, China large-caps −3.87%, Australia −3.18%, Hong Kong −2.93%, India −2.68%, Indonesia −2.37%, Germany −2.32%. The best-to-worst spread narrowed to 5.60 points from 8.07 — a board that goes red almost everywhere while its spread narrows is de-grossing, not dispersing. Last week the money changed neighborhoods; this week it left.

The cross-asset backdrop — the barrel again, and then everything else again. USO +9.12% led the board by a distance for a second consecutive week — two nine-percent weeks back to back, +124% on the year — and the reason sits in section 2: Brent closed above $100 on Wednesday for the first time since July and settled $107.63 on Thursday after Houthi attacks cut Saudi capacity by about 600,000 barrels a day. The only other green lines were the two megacap wrappers, +0.12% and +0.09%, and the dollar was flat. The bottom: the bitcoin fund −3.23%, silver −2.84%, copper miners −2.35%, gold −1.97%, the long bond −1.63%, the belly −1.34%, the S&P −0.77%, the Nasdaq 100 −0.57%. Three green, nine red. Last week the oil line and the copper line pointed in opposite directions and this letter called it a supply shock, not a growth signal; this week they still do, and the two duration lines fell with both hedges, which is the supply shock arriving in the discount rate. The funding tells did not harden this week. They broke.

The US sectors. Three of eleven closed green: energy +1.69%, communications +0.51%, technology +0.21%. The bottom: health care −3.55% — the worst US sector by a distance, and section 1’s engine says it was the worst sector on earth — materials −2.84%, discretionary −1.70%, industrials −1.65%, utilities −1.60%, financials −1.46%, staples −1.42%, real estate −1.16%. Not the duration sort of last week, when the rate-sensitive groups and the commodity groups sat at the bottom together. This is a sort with two floors: the commodity-input groups (materials, industrials) still down, but the defensives — health care, utilities, staples — down as much or more. Sunday’s letter owns the tape beneath it; the geography is that a market selling its defensives on a down week is a market raising cash, not rotating.

The tech ETFs — the split held, and the chip stack split inside itself. Six green lines of twenty-one, and five of the six are silicon or the pipe to it: the S&P semiconductor fund +2.87% led the board, the fabless vehicle +1.18%, the grid fund +1.00%, the IoT line +0.56%, data centers +0.28%, SMH +0.27%. The red fifteen are the layer above the chip and the two side-bets: uranium −5.61%, fintech −4.74%, lithium −3.63%, ARK −3.06%, software −2.92% — a third consecutive week as one of the board’s worst lines — digital assets −2.69%, cloud −2.37%. The software-to-semis ratio kept falling; the pair monitor reads the spread at 0.6 standard deviations, closing from 1.1. Two weeks of software over silicon, now two weeks of silicon over software, and the sort has a name from last week: duration. What changed inside the stack is the part Sunday’s Hypergrowth letter owns — the equal-weight semis (+2.87%) beat the cap-weighted (+0.27%) by two and a half points because Nvidia fell 4.45% and the memory names were sold on Thursday and not bought back on Friday. The chip trade is no longer one trade.

The global sectors. Two green of twelve: energy +2.16% and communications +1.35%. Technology −0.13%, flat. Then the decider this letter has tracked for four editions: global financials fell 2.02% to 134.23 — from the 137.00 record set on September 3 to under the 134.55 August line, in six sessions. Materials −2.81% to 112.05, under the February line for a third week; the bottom is health care −3.95%, the worst global sector, with consumer discretionary −2.29% and REITs −1.53% beside it. Three editions ago materials set a record and un-cleared its line within five sessions. This week financials did the identical thing on a one-week delay. Two of the four sectors that decide the tape have now taken a record and given it back inside a week; the pattern this letter has been describing since August has a second data point, and it is the same shape.

Was the sector week global, or one region carrying the average? The house Sector Engine decomposes each of the eleven sectors into its four regional legs, and this week’s answer is the mirror of last week’s: eight cells green of forty-four. Last week every emerging-market cell was green; this week EM has one green cell in eleven — technology, +1.0%. The US has two (tech +0.9%, energy +0.8%), Europe three (tech +2.6%, communications +2.0%, utilities +0.1%), developed Asia two (energy +6.4%, utilities +1.6%). Health care was red in all four regions — US −4.6%, Europe −5.5%, developed Asia −3.5%, EM −1.2% — the only sector red everywhere, and the worst cell on the board in Europe. And the sharpest single split, for a third consecutive week, is energy, with the sign alternating a third time: the US cut +0.8%, Europe’s energy −3.2%, and developed Asia’s +6.4% — the strongest cell on the entire board, the Tokyo-proxied refiners and trading houses catching the barrel Europe’s integrated majors did not. Three weeks, three different regions owning the same commodity.

The Global Compass

Regions: the corridor split, and developed beat emerging for the first time in four weeks. Emerging fell more than developed — VWO −1.77% against VEA −1.45% — after three straight weeks of EM leading, and the composition of the loss is the week’s regional story: China large-caps −3.87%, India −2.68%, Indonesia −2.37%, Hong Kong −2.93% — the non-corridor half of EM — while the corridor split in two. Korea flat in dollars and +3.3% in won; Taiwan −1.13% in dollars and −0.8% in Taipei; Japan +0.28% in dollars to 98.56 — a new record close — and −1.55% on the Nikkei, −1.8% on the TOPIX. Japan made a record in the currency its wrapper reports in while falling in the currency its companies report in. The read this letter carried last week — the AI-supply-chain bid is cyclical inside a broadening market — got its counter-demonstration: when the market narrows, the corridor’s dollar wrappers are held up by their currencies for exactly as long as the currencies rise. The won and the yen both rose this week. Section 7 says why that is the asterisk, not the answer.

Sectors: the defensives were sold harder than the cyclicals, on a down week. The engine’s cyclical-defensive spreads carry a sign this letter has not printed in a red week before: US +1.6% — cyclicals −1.1%, defensives −2.8% — and Europe +2.1% — cyclicals −0.4%, defensives −2.5%. Developed Asia was the exception again, −0.7%, the cyclicals down two percent against the defensives’ −1.3%. In price the week was risk-off; in relative terms it was risk-on, because the sectors that lost most were the ones that are supposed to lose least. Health care −4.6% in the US and −5.5% in Europe is what did it. That is not a rotation reading. It is a liquidation reading: the groups with the most gains to sell were sold, whatever their beta.

Sectors: the leaders’ bench cleared a line, held it a day, and gave it back — twice now. Three editions of materials read led, lagged, led-to-a-record, un-cleared. Two editions of financials: “one green day from its record,” then the record on Thursday September 3, then 134.23 this Friday, under the 134.55 line it had cleared to get there. Technology −0.13% and 4.7% under its June high; energy +2.16%, the barrel +124% on the year and the sector +42%; industrials −1.14%, 5.7% under its August high. A board where the closest challenger takes its record and gives it back within a week, and the previous challenger did the same thing three weeks earlier, is a board that can clear lines and cannot hold them. Last week this letter said that question had been open since materials first asked it. It is answered now, twice, the same way.

Stay home vs go global — the US view. America lost less: VEU −1.42%, VT −1.11%, SPY −0.77% — the first stay-home week in two, and it came the week the world index gave back its record. The year reads the other way and still comfortably: +15.8% against +13.4% against +12.1%, ex-US ahead by 3.7 points, from 4.5. Both readings, both honest: the trend is intact, the week went against it, and the weekly closes on VEU’s board are what decide which one is the signal — 86.41 the record, 86.08 the old one, and 85.23 now above the price, five cents above it, which makes it a line to reclaim rather than a line to hold.

Stay home vs go global — the Europe view: the mask flipped a fourth time. Last week the dollar wrapper fell less than the hedged one because the euro was bid. This week the euro slipped a fifth of a percent and the dollar-listed Europe fund fell 1.87% while the euro-hedged wrapper fell 1.66% — the currency was the worse half by a hair, the equities the story. Underneath: Germany −2.32% in dollars, the DAX −2.0% in euros, from 26,046 to 25,519; the Stoxx 600 −1.7%; the Euro Stoxx 50 −1.1%; France −1.66%; the UK −1.34%; and Switzerland −4.48% — the SMI’s worst week of the summer, −4.05% in francs, health care’s home index. And the bond market moved harder than the stock market: the Bund’s ten-year yield closed the week at 3.52%, up 17 basis points from 3.35%, after the ECB raised its deposit rate to 2.50% on Thursday — unanimously, Lagarde’s “no-brainer,” the second hike of the war — and France borrowed at 4.45% against Italy’s 4.35%: the inversion is ten basis points now, from six. The gilt 5.28%. Europe’s two core markets pointed the same way last week. This week the periphery joined them, and the Swiss defensives went first.

Stay home vs go global — the Asia view: the corridor was three markets this week. Last week the corridor answered twice in one direction. This week it answered three ways. Japan: a record close in dollars at 98.56, up 0.28%, on a week the Nikkei fell 1.55% from 65,021 to 64,011 and the TOPIX 1.8% — because dollar-yen fell from 155.66 to 153.55, the yen’s strongest level in seven months, past the peak of July’s intervention. Korea: +3.3% in Seoul, flat in New York, for the timing reason above; the local market touched 7,172 on Tuesday, closed 6,910 on Friday, under 7,000. Taiwan: −1.13% in dollars, −0.8% in Taipei, 110.91 from the 112.18 record set on September 4, after Thursday’s 108.92 — the corridor’s logic economy sold with the US chip leaders on Thursday and bought back less on Friday. Korea over Taiwan +1.1 points on the week; Korea over global semis −0.3. Memory over logic held; the corridor over the world did not. The re-rating question from July stays answered in price for Korea and Japan. The asterisk is now two currencies wide.

The engine’s Asia spreads put the wrapper-versus-home gap on one panel: Kospi minus EWY +3.4 points, Nikkei minus EWJ −1.8 points, Taiex minus EWT +0.3. The memory vehicle, DRAM, fell 0.99% to 59.10 — 61.58 on Wednesday, 58.56 on Thursday, and above the 58 line on every close of the week. Last week memory diverged from its region’s confirmation and then closed the gap in memory’s favour; this week memory held while the region’s wrappers gave ground. Two weeks of memory leading logic, and section 3’s Rubin sub-indices say which physical layers were bought with it.

Stay tech vs go broad. Tech led by losing less, at home and abroad. The Nasdaq 100 −0.57% against the S&P’s −0.77%; global tech −0.13% against the world’s −1.11%. Technology the third-best US sector and the third-best global sector; the equal-weight semis the best tech line, software among the worst. Tech led the way it led last week — by its silicon — but the aggregate went negative this time because the chips’ gain was smaller than the code’s loss and the biggest chip fell 4.45%. Same direction inside the stack, a weaker aggregate: the week the leadership narrowed inside the leader.

Momentum vs defensive — both ends fell, and the pattern broke the right way. International min-vol fell 0.84% to 93.98 — after three consecutive weeks of making a high and not holding it, it made no high at all. International momentum fell 0.96% to 53.74, ninety cents under the failed August breakout at 54.64, a fifth week below it. Global min-vol −1.75%. The defensive end fell almost as much as the aggressive end, on a week the world index fell 1.4%: the factor pair did not sort the week, the liquidation did. On the year momentum still leads min-vol +12.0% against +9.0%; the regime is intact, and for the first time in four weeks the week went neither with it nor against it — it went through it.

One more pair, awake and pointing the old way. EAFE value −0.81% against EAFE growth −2.23% — value led by 1.4 points on a down week, the second week running, and it led on the week the corridor’s growth wrappers gave ground and the commodity exporters (Brazil, Norway, Poland) held. On the year value keeps the argument, +15.3% against +6.9%, and the gap widened to 8.4 points from 6.9. Last week both factor pairs moved the same way — momentum up, value up, min-vol up but fading — and this letter called it a repricing. This week momentum and min-vol fell together and value led growth: the risk appetite that changed neighborhoods last week went home this week, and the neighborhood it left was growth.

2 · The State

The mechanism, named: the oil shock went into the curve, and the curve went into everything. Put the week in order. Monday, with New York closed, Seoul rose 4.2% on OpenAI’s new model and Tokyo 2%. Tuesday, Wall Street reopened and sold — the Dow −1.2%, six of thirty stocks up — while Brent went to $99 after the US struck five Iranian tankers and Iran said it had hit two American vessels and eight tankers; the ten-year closed at 4.81%, its highest since October 2023. Wednesday Brent closed above $100 for the first time since July, Europe fell two percent, the ten-year went to 4.86%, and the Treasury tripled its buyback to $6 billion. Thursday the ECB hiked, producer prices printed 5.4% on the year, Houthi attacks cut Saudi capacity by about 600,000 barrels a day, Brent settled $107.63, the thirty-year yield closed at 5.36% — its highest since 2007 — after a weak auction in which the buyback bought only $5.2 billion of the $6 billion offered, and the belly of the Treasury curve made a new low. Four down days; the world index’s record gone by Wednesday’s close. Then Friday, at 08:30 in Washington: CPI +0.4% on the month and 3.4% on the year, in line; core +0.3% against 0.2% expected; gasoline +3.9% and more than a third of the increase; hike odds for September 16 to about 82%. And the tape rose one percent — its first up day in five — with the chips +2.4%, the VIX −11%, and WTI back to $100 at the settle from $102.48. The honest name for the week: the market repriced the bill from Monday to Thursday and bought the invoice on Friday. Whether it pays twice is the question the Fed answers on Wednesday.

What did choose: the two quiet tells, both against — and the third one, for. The bond market first. IEF spent the week entirely under the reclaim line and falling — 92.16, 91.90, 91.18, 91.01 — never approaching 93.17, and printing 91.01 on Friday, a new low for the year and for the past twelve months. That is the fifth consecutive failed weekly reclaim, and the second of the five with no midweek push at all; last week the pattern changed from “trying and failing” to “not trying,” and this week it changed again to “falling.” TLT broke its own floor: 80.78 on Thursday, a new fifty-two-week low close, 80.87 Friday — under the 81.2 this letter said “keeps it a dissent rather than an alarm.” The structure the house has carried since July — the long bond holds, the belly refuses — did not hold this week; both ends fell, the belly more. The bond veto over the equity read is engaged, and it is no longer a dissent. Then the yen, which chose the other way again, harder: dollar-yen fell from 155.66 to 153.55, its low 153.48 on Wednesday — the yen’s strongest level in seven months, past the peak of July’s intervention, on a week the Bank of Japan meets next. Last week this letter revised the line to “156 is the line, 160 is the door” and said a weekly close under 155 “says the intervention-and-hike loop has taken over from the carry loop.” It closed under 155. The loop has taken over. Two tells against the bull, one for it — and the one for it is the one that unwinds the funding of the other two.

The podium turned once, and the tape heard the data instead. The ECB on Thursday: 2.50%, unanimous, no guidance on the next step, and Lagarde’s “no-brainer” — the second hike of the war, delivered with the Bund at its highest since 2011 and France borrowing dearer than Italy. Friday’s CPI was the number Waller said he was waiting for, and it came in hot on core by a tenth. The reading the previous two editions carried as the central tension — hard assets priced for an easing cycle against central banks leaning hawkish — resolved for a third week in the hawks’ favour, and this time on both sides of the Atlantic at once: gold −1.97% on the week, silver −2.84%, copper miners −2.35% with a −7% Thursday, the bitcoin fund −3.23%, the dollar flat at 99. Gold spent Thursday at 396.36 on the fund — under the 396.75 falsifier this letter set — and reclaimed it Friday at 398.77; the gold future at 4,366 from 4,430. Bitcoin −4.4% on the week to 76,813, with a 76,568 close on Thursday — the coin’s first close under the 77,000 floor of the zone it had not left since June. The same input, the same trade, and this time both scorecards say the same thing: the metal fell, the coin fell, and one of them left its range.

One session, and the pattern with a memory inside it — inverted. Two weeks of Friday sessions gave this letter a rhyme: a discount rate leaning up on a policy signal buys duration-light quality; leaning up on a growth signal buys the order book. This Friday was a third variant — a discount rate leaning up on an inflation signal — and the market bought the order book anyway: chips +2.4%, Marvell +4.7%, Intel +2.9%, AMD +2.1%, the equal-weight S&P +0.8%, discretionary +0.9% on a Michigan sentiment print of 47.8, the weakest since May’s record low, with one-year inflation expectations at 4.6%. The consumer said stagflation and the tape bought the consumer. What did not come back is the part that matters for the physical layer: SanDisk −3.4%, Western Digital −2.4%, Micron flat on a day the rest of the chip trade was bought in the exact order it had been sold on Thursday. The chip trade is being sorted from the inside now. Sunday’s Hypergrowth letter owns the names; the geography is that the memory economy is Korean, and Korea’s wrapper closed the week flat.

The two hard-asset charts, read the house way. Gold: the impulse out of the consolidation stalled a second week, this time from above — the fund’s Thursday close at 396.36 was under the falsifier, Friday’s 398.77 was back above it, and the week’s high of 406.56 never re-approached the 410.22 line to clear. The count’s leg is alive by 39 cents of Thursday close and two dollars of Friday close. Bitcoin: the coin closed under the zone on Thursday — 76,568 — and stayed under it Friday at 76,813; the fund closed 43.77, under both the 44 and 44.5 lines it had reclaimed a week ago, with a 43.42 low. Last week one hedge reclaimed its lines and the other made a lower low; this week both lost their lines, one by a daily close and one by the weekly. The pair ratio that had pushed to the bottom of its post-February range — the crypto leg holding better than the metal — turned: on the week the metal held better. Inside the duration repricing there is no longer a preferred hedge; there is a preferred cash position.

Seoul: the certificate was tested from both sides in one week, and it is intact on the weekly close. The fund walked 188.87 → 189.91 → 190.78 (through the cap) → 182.78 (under the high water) → 188.72. The structural read from four weeks ago — breakout, consolidation above the broken channel, completed double bottom, resistance at 180 — now has its confirmation candle, two held weeks, a daily close through the cap that did not become a weekly close, and a daily close under the high water that did not become one either. What it also has is the currency clause working both ways at once: the won rose 1.1% to 1,341 — the corridor’s currency was bid on the week — and the local index rose 3.3% while the wrapper stood still, because the wrapper had already paid for the local rally before it happened. The certificate is genuine and co-signed. This week the co-signature was worth three points of return the dollar investor did not receive.

Europe, two machines, and the weighing machine moved first. The voting machine sold everything with a defensive label: Switzerland −4%, health care −5.5% in the engine’s European cut, real estate −3.4%, the DAX −2%, the Stoxx 600 −1.7%. The weighing machine, which moved last week for the first time in a month, moved again and harder: the Bund 3.52% from 3.35%, up 17 basis points in a week and 37 in twenty-one days; France 4.45% from 4.21%, up 24; Italy 4.35% from 4.14%, up 21; the gilt 5.28% from 5.06%, up 22. France over Italy is ten basis points now, from six, from four tenths of one three weeks ago. And the sovereign board’s composite jumped: the Sovereign Pressure Index at +0.85 from +0.43, with the twenty-one-day baseline at +0.37 — the pressure re-heating on the ten-year leg (z-score 1.9) with the curve flattening (z-slope −2.3): the belly of every G7 curve sold, the long ends less. The equal-weight G7 ten-year yield rose 18 basis points on the week to 4.21%, its path Monday to Friday 3.98, 4.06, 4.12, 4.21, 4.21. And the hemisphere swap this letter tracked for two weeks stopped swapping: the US thirty-year sold to 5.36% and Japan’s thirty-year sold to 4.05% from 3.97% — both sovereign complexes exhaling at once, for the first time since August. The Atlantic has the pressure, the Pacific joined it, and the ECB hiked into it.

The macro print. Friday’s CPI belongs to Sunday’s letter in its print-record detail; its geography belongs here, and it was the reverse of last week’s payrolls. A hot core number did not lift the corridor — Seoul had closed 1.8% lower on Thursday’s New York tape before the print, and the dollar wrappers on Korea and Taiwan recovered 3% and 2% on Friday from Thursday’s holes without recovering the week. It did not sell Germany further; the DAX rose 0.6% into the US open. And it bought the cyclical end of every US board while the memory names, the software complex and both hedges stayed sold. Two weeks ago the market would not pay for beats; last week it paid for a growth number; this week it paid for an inflation number. A market that pays for a hot CPI is telling you it had already paid for a hotter one — from Monday to Thursday, in the curve. Section 6 says what follows if the Fed disagrees with the tape’s arithmetic.

Hold both halves. The equity boards resolved downward — the world index under its falsifier by five cents, financials under its August line a week after its record, breadth from twenty-eight of thirty-five to four, the four house indices three red of four. The funding tells split the same way they did last week and each one moved further: the belly at a new low and the long bond through its floor, the yen through 155 the other way, the Atlantic and the Pacific sovereign complexes selling together. Sideways ended two weeks ago upward. This week it ended again, downward, and the bill for the record was presented before the number that was supposed to present it.

The structural read — the wave count, five years up, unchanged. Zoom out and this week changes the count’s status without changing the count. From the October 2022 low the house count on the world ex-US reads waves 1 and 2 complete and wave 3 still progressing — price riding the upper half of a four-year channel, with the September 4 record as a new high inside an advance whose projection runs to the channel’s top, above 90. On this count the week’s 1.4% is a pause in a third wave, the kind that arrives on a breadth collapse and a narrowing spread and does not change the direction of the channel. The count keeps its own falsifier — it fails at the channel, not at the 85.23 shelf — and the channel’s lower line sits near 72, a long way under the price. The all-world index, on the same chart, is riding its own rising line from the April 2025 low with the August record a point above it. The September base case this letter stated two weeks ago, about five percent of consolidation, is now 1.4% in on the world index and 1.8% on the S&P from its August high. The count says pause; the shelf says the pause is real. Probability, not prophecy.

3 · The Outlook

The three-index read — the money stayed in the layer that builds, and left everything else. We read the three together because they are three stages of one spend: capex (Rubin Build-Out, what gets built), opex (Agentic Ecosystem, what it costs to run), applications (Agentic Winners, what gets sold on top).

Capex +1.04% on the week — again the only green line of the four — and +91.1% on the year. Opex −1.17% and +55.3%. Applications −4.71% and −7.0%. The order of last week held and widened: the buildout index closed Friday at 1,963.98 after a 0.9% day, from 1,947 on Thursday, while the applications layer had the family’s worst week — 949.64 Monday on the Asian closes, 923.31 Tuesday, 905.30 Wednesday, and a 910.65 close. Inside the week the buildout was green Monday through Wednesday at 1,986 and gave back two percent on Thursday with the chips; the applications layer was red every session but Friday. That is the duration sort, second week, rendered in the house’s own instruments — and this week the physical layer’s lead over the digital one was six points, from three.

The control group fell with the stack — and further than two of its three layers. Last week HALO — our growth index carrying no AI thesis — fell 2.02% while the two lighter AI layers fell 2.3% and 2.4%: the AI stack moving with growth. This week HALO fell 3.54% while opex fell 1.17% and applications 4.71% — growth was sold, the applications layer of the AI trade was sold harder, and the physical layer was bought. Put the four weeks together: AI unwind inside a flat growth tape, AI bid inside a growth sell, growth sell with the stack inside it, and now a growth sell in which the stack’s top layer led the selling and its bottom layer escaped it. The oscillation between “the AI stack” and “everything else” has been replaced for a second week by a sort that runs through the stack itself — physical over digital — and this week the digital end of the stack traded like the most expensive growth in the market, because it is. Inside HALO the week was broad and red — 2 of 23 sub-indices green, Asia-Pacific +0.72% and energy transition +0.61% — with better food −7.13%, nuclear −5.89%, longevity −5.84%, hypergrowth −5.40% and med-devices −5.03% the casualties, and North America −4.75% against Europe −3.16%. HALO is +0.3% on the year now. It was +4.0% a week ago.

Read the three windows together, because the disagreement is still the signal — and it narrowed. On the year capex leads and it is not close: +91.1% against +55.3% against −7.0%. On the month the inversion is gone: capex −6.6%, opex −9.1%, applications −0.3% — the month’s leader is the layer that lost least, and it is the applications layer, because its selling started three weeks earlier. On the week, the year’s order: capex first, applications last. Two of the three windows now point to the builder, and the one that does not is pointing at whichever layer fell first. The leadership handoff this letter has described as contested for five weeks is, this week, not being contested — it is being liquidated from the top of the stack down.

The correction lows, re-measured. Applications — which bottomed first, on June 25 — is now +31.3% off its low, from +29.3% a week ago on the revised worker history (the Amphenol split reseed of September 6 restated the Rubin series; the family’s lows are unchanged). Capex, off its July 29 low, rose to +15.0% from +13.2%; opex fell to +2.2% off a new post-high low set on September 2 at 1,500, from +14.3% off the July low it has now undercut. The spring pattern — the index that bottoms first goes on to lead — is five weeks confirmed for the applications layer’s low and two weeks dented for its lead. Probability, not prophecy.

The structural line moved the wrong way for three of four. Applications closed 9.7% below its January high — from 5.3% below a week ago; it gave back the whole gap it had recovered in August. Opex sits 9.1% below its August 13 high, from 8.1%. HALO 9.3% below its January high, from 6.0%. Capex remains 20.8% below June — from 22.0%, the only layer whose distance to its peak shrank this week, for a second week. The buildout is the only house index closer to its high than it was a week ago, and it is the one furthest from it.

Inside capex: the plant got bought, the tools got sold. The best lines in the buildout were data-center construction +6.66%, DC power and electrical +6.46%, the US constituents +5.65%, foundry and integration +5.16%, AI factory systems +3.91%, testing and metrology +3.90%, substrates +3.19%, HBM memory +2.71% — the physical plant of the buildout and the parts of the chip that go into a rack. The bottom is the equipment that makes the chip: lithography −3.69%, storage −3.52% (still +341% on the year), photomasks −3.20%, wafer processing −3.09%, grid and power −2.08%, the Japan constituents −2.03%. The buildout’s own geography split: US members +5.65%, Europe +1.26%, Asia-Pacific ex-Japan +0.35%, Japan −2.03% — the same corridor split as section 1, inside the index that owns the corridor. Twenty of thirty-six sub-indices green; the buildout’s breadth was the best in the family for a second week, and it was the only index with breadth at all.

Inside opex: the edge got bought, the model got sold. The clear green line was edge and distribution +4.11% — Cloudflare +10.5% on Wednesday carried it — with runtime and API gateways +0.82%, Europe’s constituents +0.74% and the substrate layer +0.66% behind it. The bottom: foundation models −26.25% — the one-name sub-index, Zhipu, sold 10% on Tuesday after a Jefferies multiple cut and kept going; still +499% on the year — identity and governance −6.82%, Asia’s constituents −5.97%, data and memory −4.46%, execution −3.15%, agentic security −3.07%. Four of fourteen green. The layer that runs AI split by geography this week rather than by function: Europe and the US constituents (−1.53%) held, Asia’s (−5.97%) did not, and the one foundation-model name on the board lost a quarter of its value in a week without changing the sign of its year.

Inside applications: nothing held, and the megacap edge held least badly. Zero of nine sub-indices green. The best line was the megacap gateway −0.43%, still the only sub-index positive on the year at +11.6%; then consumer −2.79%, endpoints −4.08%, enterprise −5.45%. The bottom: control plane −9.72%, the US constituents −6.99%, Asia’s −6.85%, application leaders −6.29%, Europe’s −6.17%. Last week two edges survived the sort; this week one did, and only relatively. The control plane — the layer that orchestrates agents — lost nearly ten percent in four sessions, on the week the enterprise-software complex (Shopify, UiPath, Atlassian, ServiceNow, Workday) was sold Tuesday and not recovered. The applications layer is −7.0% on the year, from −2.4%. It was one ordinary week from green three weeks ago.

The regime gauge. The Money Temperature instrument board closed the week at 50 — down five from 55 a week ago, after 53 Tuesday, 55 Wednesday and 47 on Thursday, with the regime read “Risk-on rally” at moderate confidence, from high, and Thursday’s read “mixed / transitional” at low. The spread underneath cooled in every direction: risk appetite +19 from +28, speculation +12 from +9, dedollarization −13 from −7, duration −16 from −28. The duration spread narrowing from −28 to −16 is the week’s most awkward internal: money was still leaving long bonds, but less fast, on a week the long bond made a new low. The gauge reads that as the equity side cooling toward the bond side rather than the bond side warming — which is the liquidation reading again, in the instrument’s own words. Per instrument: the Nasdaq 100 warmest at 64, EM 63, the dollar 54, the S&P 52, bitcoin 49, the world ex-US 47, the long bond 36, gold 33 — the coldest instrument on the board.

1 · This Week’s Action

The global view. The ex-US world index closed the week at 86.41, up 1.15% — a new record close, above the 86.08 mark this letter set last Saturday as the confirmation line. It did not get there in a straight line. Monday closed 85.25, Tuesday 84.65 — under the 85.23 support on a daily close, the deepest dent in four weeks — and then three green sessions: 85.13, 85.95, 86.41. Three weeks of triggering marks in both directions and resolving nothing on the weekly close ended with a weekly close that resolved the upper one. The all-world index closed 161.73, up 0.45%, sixty-six cents under its August 13 record; the S&P gained 0.11%, the Nasdaq 100 0.35%.

The year’s order held and widened. VEU +17.5% for 2026, VT +14.7%, the S&P +12.9% — the ex-US lead over America is back to 4.5 points, from 3.3 last week, because this was a week the world carried. It is the first go-global week in three.

Korea is where the confirmation extended — and it came with the Friday number. Last Saturday this letter recorded the weekly close above 180 as the confirmation of the July breakout and set the new frame: hold above 180 on the weekly closes, 183.46 the week’s high water, 190.11 the sidecar-day cap. The fund closed Friday at 188.87, up 4.81% on the week — through the high-water mark, a dollar and a quarter under the cap — after a week that dipped to 175.80 on Tuesday’s close, under 180, and then recovered every session: 178.86, 180.56, 188.87. Friday alone was worth 4.6%. It is +94.3% on the year in dollars. The Tuesday close under the line and the Friday close over the cap are the same story: the week’s global bid was written on Friday morning at 08:30 in Washington, and the corridor was the place it landed hardest.

Behind it the whole regional board went broad. Last week’s ten green of thirty-five became twenty-eight green of seven red — the fourth breadth flip in five weeks (broad in July, narrow into August 15, broad on August 22, narrow on August 29, broad now). The leaders: Brazil +6.50% led the board, Korea +4.81%, Taiwan +3.97%, Poland +3.77%, Indonesia +3.16% — the corridor and the commodity periphery green at the same time, which has not happened since July. The losers were all one continent: Germany −1.57% the worst line, France −1.10%, the Euro Stoxx 50 −0.99%, Switzerland and EAFE growth the only other red lines among the majors. The best-to-worst spread widened to 8.07 points from 6.75 — a board that broadens while its spread widens is dispersing again, not rotating in place. That is the first structural change in the regional read in a month.

The cross-asset backdrop — the barrel, and then everything else. USO +9.45% was the board’s leader by a distance, and the reason sits in section 2: oil went from 83 to above 91 after the US and Iran exchanged fire on Tuesday and two tankers were reported hit near Hormuz. The bitcoin fund +3.03% was second, the top-20 and top-30 lines +1.22% and +1.13% third and fourth. The bottom: copper miners −3.98%, the long bond −0.81%, the belly −0.65%, gold −0.52%, the dollar −0.35%. Six green, six red. The oil line and the copper line pointing in opposite directions in the same week is the board’s own diagnosis: a supply shock, not a growth signal — the metal that prices growth was sold, the commodity that prices a strait was bought. And the two duration lines, IEF and TLT, red together on a week the dollar also fell: the funding tells this letter tracks did not rotate, they hardened.

The US sectors. Four of eleven closed green and financials closed flat to the cent: energy +2.20%, technology +0.86%, utilities +0.82%, health care +0.17%. The bottom: consumer discretionary −1.96%, materials −1.39%, real estate −1.24%, industrials −1.06%, staples −1.02%. Not the full inversion of the previous two weeks — technology stayed green from last week’s top three, communications fell out of it — but a specific shape: the two rate-sensitive groups (real estate, discretionary) and the two commodity-input groups (materials, industrials) at the bottom, the barrel and the chips at the top. Sunday’s letter owns the tape beneath it; the geography is that Friday’s jobs number sorted the sectors by their sensitivity to the discount rate, and the sort held through the close.

The tech ETFs — the split flipped back. Two Fridays ago this letter named the split — semis down, software up — and last week called it a rotation with a direction inside the stack. This week the direction reversed: thirteen green lines of twenty-one, led by silicon and crypto — digital assets +7.45%, WisdomTree AI +3.20%, SMH +2.51%, XSD +1.99%, ARK +1.93%, the fabless vehicle +1.57% — and the red eight are the layer above the chip, in the exact order it led last week: defense tech −4.85%, software −4.50% (the board’s worst after two weeks as its best), cybersecurity −4.03%, cloud −3.64%. The software-to-semis ratio that bottomed on June 22 and had risen 52% off that low gave back a full week of it on Friday alone; the pair monitor reads the spread at 1.1 standard deviations, closing. Two weeks of software over silicon, one week of silicon over software, and both on the same one-week cadence as every other board. The difference this time is that the reversal has a macro cause with a date on it: payrolls at 08:30 ET on September 4, a duration repricing that hit the long-dated cash flows of software and handed the order book to the cyclical end of the chip complex.

The global sectors. Seven green of twelve, and the top three are the same three that led the US: energy +2.29%, technology +1.65%, financials +1.23%. The detail that matters most is the one this letter has tracked as the tape’s decider for three editions: global financials closed Thursday at 137.00 — a new record — after sitting 0.38% under the old one a week ago, “one green day away.” It got the green day on Wednesday and Thursday, and gave back 0.6% on Friday to 136.20. Recorded, then eased — the same shape as materials two weeks ago, which set its record and un-cleared its February line within five sessions. Materials this week: −0.69% to 115.29, under the 116.54 February line for a second week, with copper miners −3.98% underneath it. The bottom of the global board: consumer discretionary −1.77%, industrials −1.15%, REITs −1.01%.

Was the sector week global, or one region carrying the average? The house Sector Engine decomposes each of the eleven sectors into its four regional legs, and this week’s answer inverts last week’s: emerging markets were the greenest column on the board — every one of the eleven EM cells green (tech +3.4%, energy +2.1%, industrials +2.0%) — while Asia-Pacific developed was red in eight of eleven (tech −2.4%, materials −3.0%, real estate −2.8%; utilities +5.4% the lone strong cell). Tech was green in three regions of four and red only in Japan-proxied developed Asia. And the sharpest single split, once more, is energy — but with the sign flipped from last week: the US cut rose 2.2% while Europe’s energy fell 3.1%, because the global vehicle is where the US barrel lives and the European vehicle is where the European refiner lives. Last week Europe’s energy rose while the global cut fell; this week the exact reverse. The barrel moves; the two wrappers take turns being the one that owns it.

The Global Compass

Regions: the corridor led for a second week — with the periphery alongside this time. Emerging beat developed a third straight week (VWO +1.07% against VEA +0.96%), but the composition changed again: the corridor (Korea, Taiwan, Japan all green, Korea the second-best line on the whole board) and the commodity periphery (Brazil, Poland, Indonesia, Argentina, Norway) rose together, while the developed core of Europe fell. Two weeks ago the EM bid was China and the periphery with the corridor resting; last week it was the corridor with China soft; this week it is both, with Germany and France the only large markets sold. The read this letter has carried — the AI-supply-chain bid is cyclical inside a broadening market — got its clearest single-week demonstration of the summer: a stronger-than-expected US economy is a bigger order book for the corridor, and a higher oil price is a better week for the exporters. Both landed on Friday.

Sectors: risk-on in the emerging column, risk-off in developed Asia, mixed at home. The engine’s cyclical-defensive spreads give the rotation its regime reading by region: EM +0.7% and Europe +0.4% cyclicals over defensives; the US −0.7% — both sides down, cyclicals more — and Asia-Pacific developed −2.2%, the only region where the defensives clearly out-held the cyclicals. That is the week’s most awkward internal: the region whose country funds led the board in dollars (Japan +2.51%) is the region whose local sector cut read defensive. The reconciliation is the yen: three days of yen strength from 160 to 156 flattered every dollar wrapper on Japan while the Tokyo tape itself rotated toward safety. Section 7 takes that apart.

Sectors: the leaders’ bench cleared a line and kept it — for a day. Three weeks of materials read led, lagged, led-to-a-new-high, then cleared-and-un-cleared. This week financials joined the pattern: the record this letter said was “one green day away” arrived on Thursday at 137.00 and eased to 136.20 by Friday. Technology rose 1.65% and remains 4.6% under its June high; energy is its own story, the barrel +105% on the year and the sector +39%; industrials fell 1.15% and sits 4.6% under its August high. A board where the closest challenger takes its record and gives back half a percent the next day is a board that can clear lines. Whether it can hold them is still the open question, and it has been open since materials first asked it three weeks ago.

Stay home vs go global — the US view. The world won the week: VEU +1.15%, VT +0.45%, SPY +0.11% — the first go-global week in three, and it came with the record. The year reads the same way and wider: +17.5% against +14.7% against +12.9%, ex-US ahead by 4.5 points, from 3.3. Both readings, both honest: the trend is intact, and this week it was being sanded back up rather than down. The weekly closes on VEU’s new board — 86.41 the record, 86.08 the old one below it, 85.23 the support that was dented on Tuesday and held on the week — are the levels that say which one is the signal.

Stay home vs go global — the Europe view: the mask flipped a third time. Two weeks ago the euro was bid and the dollar wrapper rose while every European index fell. Last week the euro gave it back and the hedged wrapper beat the unhedged. This week the mask reversed again: the dollar-listed Europe fund fell 0.26% while the euro-hedged wrapper fell 0.87% — the currency was the better half, the equities the worse. Underneath, the exception of last week became the casualty of this one: Germany, which closed the prior Friday at a 52-week high, was the worst line on the whole regional board at −1.57%, France −1.10%, the Euro Stoxx 50 −0.99%; the UK +0.08% and Spain +0.64% the continent’s only green large lines. And the bond market agreed with the order, loudly: the Bund’s ten-year yield traded 3.36% on Tuesday, a level last seen in April 2011, and 3.38% on Wednesday, while France still borrowed dearer than Italy at ten years — 4.21% against 4.14% — and the gap widened to six basis points from four tenths of one. The continent’s two core markets are pointing in the same direction now. Down.

Stay home vs go global — the Asia view: the corridor answered twice. Last week’s question was whether the confirmation, delivered by the won, would hold. The week answered in two halves. Tuesday: Korea closed 175.80, under the 180 line — the Tuesday of the yen through 160 and the bond rout’s second day, the 1997 transmission channel this letter flagged as “not an abstraction” doing exactly what it does. Friday: 188.87, through the 183.46 high-water mark and within $1.24 of the 190.11 sidecar cap. Taiwan +3.97% to 112.18 — a new 52-week high; Japan +2.51% to 98.28, nineteen cents under its August record. The corridor took the Tuesday hit and delivered the Friday recovery, and the Friday recovery had a macro cause in Washington and a currency cause in Tokyo. The re-rating question from July stays answered as far as price can answer it; the new asterisk is that the answer now depends on a US jobs number and a yen that moved four figures in four days.

The engine’s Asia AI spreads put numbers on the corridor’s internal order, and the order reversed: Korea over Taiwan +0.8% on the week — memory leading logic, after last week’s logic-over-memory +2.4% — and Korea +2.3% over global semis for a second week. The memory vehicle itself, DRAM, rose 6.91% to 59.69, through the 58 line it lived under all of last week. Memory diverging from its own region’s confirmation was the corridor’s internal contradiction to watch; this week the contradiction closed, in memory’s favour.

Stay tech vs go broad. Tech led, narrowly at home and clearly abroad. The Nasdaq 100 +0.35% against the S&P’s +0.11%; global tech +1.65% against the world’s +0.45%. Technology the second-best US sector and the second-best global sector; the semis the best tech lines, software the worst. Tech led this week the way it led in the first half of the year — by its silicon — and the aggregate went positive because the chips outweighed the code. The reverse of last week’s internal rotation, same aggregate direction.

Momentum vs defensive — both ends rose, and the pattern held. International min-vol printed a new high on Thursday at 95.16 and faded to 94.78 by Friday, +1.04% on the week — the third consecutive week the defensive end has made a high and not held it into the close. Global min-vol did the identical thing: 128.22 Thursday, a new high, 127.51 Friday, +0.09%. International momentum rose 1.76% to 54.26 — thirty-eight cents under the failed August breakout at 54.64, a fourth week below it but the closest it has been. So the defensive end keeps making highs and giving them back, and the aggressive end keeps approaching its line and not taking it — the same postponement shape, now on a week the world index itself did resolve. On the year momentum still leads min-vol +13.1% against +9.9%; the regime is intact and, for once, the week went with it.

One more pair, awake again. EAFE value +1.49% against EAFE growth −0.38% — value led by nearly two points after last week’s dead heat, and it led on the week the corridor and the commodity periphery carried the board. On the year value keeps the argument, +16.2% against +9.3%. Last week both factor pairs flattened and the rotation ran through groups, not styles. This week both pairs moved and moved the same way — momentum up, value up, min-vol up but fading — which says the money changed risk appetite and neighborhoods at once. That is what a repricing looks like, as opposed to a rotation.

The Closelook letters — where this one sits. 2 · The State

The mechanism, named: a repricing of time, delivered by a jobs report. Put the week in order. Monday and Tuesday belonged to the bond market — Japan’s ten-year closed above 3% on Tuesday for the first time since 1996, the Bund touched its highest since April 2011, the US ten-year ran six straight rising sessions back to its January-2025 prints, and dollar-yen crossed 160 overnight. Wednesday the US ten-year touched 4.81%, its highest since November 2023, and oil went above $90 after the US and Iran exchanged fire and two tankers were reported hit near Hormuz. Thursday the tape had its best day in a month, Waller cut the hike odds to a coin flip, and the yen was already back at 157. Friday, at 08:30 in Washington: payrolls +162,000 against a consensus near 53,000, with 55,000 of upward revisions, unemployment 4.1%, participation 61.6% — the first jobs report of the Warsh Fed, three times the number. The two-year yield jumped to 4.43%; hike odds for September 16 went back above 58%; and the market re-priced duration in one session. The long-dated cash flows lost: gold −1.2% on the day, bitcoin −2%, software −2%, Apple and Microsoft the weakest shares in the Dow. The order book won: chips +3%, Nvidia and Caterpillar the strongest Dow shares, Korea +4.6% in a session. The honest name for the week is not sideways any more. It is a market that was handed a reason and moved on it.

What did choose: two of the quiet tells, in opposite directions. The bond market first. IEF spent the week entirely under the reclaim line — 92.74, 92.10, 92.18, 92.28, 92.25 — never approaching 93.17, and printing 92.10 on Tuesday, a new low for the year. That is the fourth consecutive failed weekly reclaim, and the first of the four that did not even attempt one: three failures from ascending midweek pushes, and then a week with no push at all. TLT held its own floor at 81.2 (82.21, −0.81%, low 81.87 Tuesday). The structure stands — the long bond holds, the belly refuses — and the house’s bond veto over the equity read stays engaged, now on a week the equity read gave its confirmation. Then the yen, which chose the other way. Dollar-yen crossed 160 overnight into Tuesday — through the 159.5 wire, the door this letter had watched since July’s record intervention, on the exact day Morgan Stanley’s desk noted that more than half the intervention’s effect had already faded. Then Bank of Japan board member Hajime Takata said hikes may need to become “continuous” rather than twice a year, and the yen ran three days: 159 Wednesday, 157 Thursday, 156 Friday — its strongest three-day run since the July intervention, and back under the wire it had just broken. Two tells, two directions: the belly of the US curve hardened against the bull, and the funding currency of the carry loop reversed in the bull’s favour. Last week both chose against. This week they split.

The podium turned, twice, and the tape heard both. Thursday: Christopher Waller cut the September hike odds to a coin flip, the ten-year eased, the dollar fell a third day, gold and oil rose. Friday: the number. The reading the previous edition carried as the central tension — hard assets priced for an easing cycle against a central bank leaning hawkish — resolved for a second week in the hawks’ favour, and this time the resolution was the data rather than the podium: gold −0.52% on the week with Friday its worst session, the miners sold, silver −0.33%, the dollar index near 99 after three losing days into the number and then bid on it. Gold spent Tuesday under $400 on the fund and reclaimed it Thursday at 410.22 before Friday took it back to 406.77. Bitcoin +3.96% on the week to a Thursday bar at 81,272 and 80,913 Friday — the coin’s highest close in almost four months, and still inside the 77,000–83,000 zone it has not left. The same input, the same trade, two different scorecards: the metal fell, the coin rose, and neither left its range.

One session, and the pattern with a memory inside it — again. Last week this letter noted that Warsh’s keynote got exactly one session of market time, and that inside that session the old-guard megacaps caught the bid against the day while the capital-hungry end of the AI trade was sold. Friday produced the mirror image with the same discount-rate logic: a hot number, a hike more probable, and this time the balance-sheet giants were the casualties (Apple, Microsoft the weakest in the Dow) while the cyclical end of the same trade — chips, industrials, the corridor — was the winner. Both sessions are the same rhyme with the sign flipped on the growth term: when the discount rate leans up on a policy signal, the market buys duration-light quality; when it leans up on a growth signal, the market buys the order book. One Friday is one Friday. It is also the second time in two weeks the tape has told us it is sorting by duration.

The two hard-asset charts, read the house way. Gold: the impulse out of the consolidation stalled again, this time from below — the fund closed the week at 406.77, printed 396.75 on Tuesday, and never re-approached the August highs. The 4,400 spot falsifier from the last two editions is not on this week’s data sheet — the spot series was not pulled — so this letter records the fund’s levels and lets the count wait a week: 396.75 is the number to hold, 410.22 the number to clear. Bitcoin: the coin spent the entire week inside the 77,000–83,000 zone for a second week — 77,300 Wednesday, 81,272 Thursday, 80,913 Friday — and the fund closed at 45.23, above both the 44 and 44.5 lines it lost on the previous Friday, with a 46.35 print on Thursday. Last week both hedges stood at their falsifiers; this week one reclaimed its lines and the other made a lower low. The pair ratio that had pushed to the bottom of its post-February range kept going: inside the duration repricing, the crypto leg held better than the metal for a second week.

Seoul: the certificate held, and then it was rewritten. The buyback-session low was never revisited, and the Tuesday close under 180 (175.80) lasted one day. The fund walked 180.86 → 175.80 → 178.86 → 180.56 → 188.87 and closed the week through the 183.46 high water. The structural read from three weeks ago — breakout, consolidation above the broken channel, completed double bottom, resistance at 180 — now has its confirmation candle and its first held week, with the cap at 190.11 as the next line. What it also has is a currency it cannot control on either side: last week the won wrote the confirmation, this week the yen’s reversal and a US jobs number wrote the extension. The corridor’s certificate is genuine. It is co-signed.

Europe, two machines, one week on — and the weighing machine moved. The voting machine sold the core: Frankfurt gave back its new high, Paris fell, the Euro Stoxx 50 fell, and the euro was bid, so the dollar wrappers fell less than the hedged ones. The weighing machine, which barely moved last week, moved this week: France 4.207%, Italy 4.144% — the inversion held a third week and the gap widened to six basis points from four tenths. The Bund at 3.354% on Friday from 3.296% the week before; the German ten-year up 19 basis points in twenty-one days. And the sovereign board’s own composite turned back up: SPI +0.43 from +0.35, with the twenty-one-day baseline at −0.08 — the pressure re-heating, and led this time by the ten-year leg (z-score 0.85) rather than the long end. But the direction inside it swapped hemispheres for a second time: last week the US long end rallied and Japan’s sold; this week the US thirty-year sold back to 5.247% from 5.207% while Japan’s thirty-year rallied fifteen basis points to 3.970% from its 4.125% era high — the same week the yen recovered four figures. One sovereign complex inhaling, the other exhaling, and they have now swapped roles two weeks running. The Atlantic has the pressure again.

The macro print. Friday’s payrolls belong to Sunday’s letter in their print-record detail; their geography belongs here, and it was global inside one session. A US number three times the consensus lifted Korea 4.6%, Taiwan 1.9%, Brazil’s fund to the top of the regional board and the corridor’s memory vehicle 6.6% on the day — and sold Germany, France, the software complex and both hedges. The bar has moved again, in the other direction from last week: a fortnight ago the market would not pay for good prints; this week it paid for a good macro number, and paid the cyclical end of every board for it. A market that will not pay for beats but will pay for growth data is telling you where its risk sits: not in the companies, in the discount rate. Section 6 says what follows if the CPI on Friday disagrees.

Hold both halves. The equity boards resolved upward — the world index at a record, financials at a record, the corridor through its high water, breadth back to twenty-eight of thirty-five. The funding tells split — the belly of the US curve hardened for a fourth week, the yen reversed in the bull’s favour, the Atlantic sovereigns re-heated while the Pacific cooled. Sideways is over. What replaced it is a bull market that was confirmed by a tightening impulse, and that is a specific kind of confirmation.

The structural read — the wave count, five years up. Zoom out and the record changes the count’s status without changing the count. From the October 2022 low the house count on the world ex-US reads waves 1 and 2 complete and wave 3 still progressing — price riding the upper half of a four-year channel, and this week’s 86.41 is a new high inside an advance whose projection runs higher. On this count the three-week postponement was a pause in a third wave, and the record close is the pause ending as a third wave should end it: on a breadth flip to broad, with value and momentum both rising. The count keeps its own falsifier — it fails at the channel, not at the record shelf — and the section-4 ladder marks where that argument would begin. The September base case this letter stated last week, about five percent of consolidation, has not been withdrawn by one record close; it has been made harder to reach. Probability, not prophecy.

3 · The Outlook

The three-index read — the money went back up the stack, into the layer that builds. We read the three together because they are three stages of one spend: capex (Rubin Build-Out, what gets built), opex (Agentic Ecosystem, what it costs to run), applications (Agentic Winners, what gets sold on top).

Capex +0.40% on the week — the only green line of the four — and +88.1% on the year. Opex −2.39% and +57.1%. Applications −2.30% and −2.4%. The order of the last two weeks, money leaving the building layer for the selling layer, reversed in one session: the buildout index closed Friday at 1,933.47 after a 2.5% day, from 1,886 on Thursday, while both lighter layers closed the week lower than they started it. Inside the week the buildout was the worst of the three through Wednesday and the best by Friday. That is Friday’s duration split rendered in the house’s own instruments.

The control group agreed with the stack this time — and that is the week’s most important internal. Last week HALO — our growth index carrying no AI thesis — fell 2.25% while applications rose 4.68%: an AI bid inside a growth sell. This week HALO fell 2.02% while applications fell 2.30% and opex 2.39% — the AI stack’s two lighter layers moved with growth, not against it, and only the physical layer separated from the pack. Put the three weeks together: AI unwind inside a flat growth tape, then AI bid inside a growth sell, then growth sell with the AI stack inside it and capex alone outside. The oscillation between “the AI stack” and “everything else” that ran on a one-week cadence has been replaced, at least for one week, by a sort that runs through the stack itself: physical over digital. Inside HALO the week was broad and red — 4 of 23 sub-indices green — with Latin America +2.18%, space +2.08% and longevity +1.80% the exceptions and the destination economy −6.27%, autonomous defense −5.84% and med-devices −3.96% the casualties.

Read the three windows together, because the disagreement is still the signal. On the year capex leads and it is not close: +88.1% against +57.1% against −2.4%. On the month the inversion holds: applications +12.6%, opex +3.2%, capex −2.9%. On the week, the year’s order is back: capex first. Every window now points a different way — the year to the builder, the month to the seller, the week to the builder again — which is what a leadership handoff looks like when it is being contested rather than completed. The tilt this letter announced four weeks ago toward the lighter layers was wrong one week, right the next, and this week it was Friday’s casualty.

The correction lows, re-measured. Applications — which bottomed first, on July 23 — is now +29.3% off its low, from +32.3% a week ago. Capex, off its July 29 low, rose to +13.2% from +12.6%; opex slipped to +14.3% from +17.0%. The spring pattern — the index that bottoms first goes on to lead — is now four weeks confirmed and one week dented. Probability, not prophecy.

The structural line moved the other way. Applications closed 5.3% below its January high — from 3.05% below a week ago; it gave back most of the gap it had recovered. Opex sits 8.1% below its August 13 high, from 5.8%. Capex remains 22.0% below June — from 22.4%, the only layer whose distance to its peak shrank this week, by a hair. The layer that was one ordinary week from going green on the year is now 2.4% under it.

Inside capex: the fab floor lit up, the design lane went dark. The best line in the buildout was storage, +11.04% on the week and +357% on the year, then AI factory systems +5.51%, DC power +5.17%, the AI factory layer +4.93%, thermal +4.79% — the physical plant of the buildout, the racks, the power, the cooling, the drives. The bottom is last week’s top, inverted: EDA and chip IP −7.76% — the design-software lane that led the buildout last week at +5.98% — high-speed interconnects −6.12%, wafer processing −4.94%, design −2.15%. The software of the buildout was sold with the rest of software; the hardware of the buildout was bought with the rest of hardware. And the sharpest reversal on any board a week ago reversed again: HBM memory, last week’s worst at −4.01%, rose 2.83% in the week the corridor’s memory vehicle cleared its line. Twenty-two of thirty-six sub-indices green; the buildout’s breadth was the best in the family.

Inside opex: the compute got bought, the code got sold. The only clear green line was compute operators +3.69% — the layer that owns the machines — with Asia’s constituents +2.20% behind it. The bottom: operations and observability −7.93% — the best sub-index across all four families last week at +5.84% — edge and distribution −3.99%, data and memory −3.82%, govern and secure −3.62%, execution −3.39%. Four of fourteen green. The layer that runs AI split exactly the way tech did, and exactly the reverse of last week: the compute was bought, the code was sold. Foundation models −1.39%, still +712% on the year.

Inside applications: only the two edges held. Two of nine sub-indices green — Asia’s constituents +0.95% and the megacap gateway +0.61%, still the only sub-index positive on the year at +11.2%. The bottom: control plane −4.36%, Europe’s constituents −4.36%, the US constituents −2.95%, enterprise −2.89%, application leaders −2.68%. Last week every sub-index in the layer was green and this letter wrote “no rotation inside the layer; the whole layer was bought.” This week the whole layer was sold except its Asian and megacap edges — which is the same duration sort, applied to the applications layer: the two sub-indices that survived are the two with the shortest-dated cash flows.

The regime gauge. The Money Temperature instrument board closed the week at 55 — down two from 57 a week ago, but up six from the 49 it printed on Wednesday and Thursday, with the regime read “Risk-on rally” at high confidence. The spread underneath is the week in one line: risk appetite +28 and speculation +9, duration −28. Money moved into equities and out of long bonds at the same time. Equities went up, hard assets fell, and the gauge cooled into the middle of the week before warming on the number: the appetite the board reads is the rotation itself, and this week the rotation had a direction.

1 · This Week’s Action

The global view. The ex-US world index closed the week at 85.43, down 0.30% — and for the third week running, the flat number is the least informative one on the page. On Monday it closed 85.21, two cents under the 85.23 support on a daily close. On Tuesday it closed 86.08 — a new record close, above the 85.85 mark this letter set as confirmation. On Friday it printed 86.35 intraday — a new record high — and then closed ninety-two cents off it. A new record close on Tuesday, a new record print on Friday, and a red week: that is the whole edition in one line. The all-world index closed 161.01, up 0.15%; the S&P gained 0.47%, the Nasdaq 100 0.42%.

The year’s order held but narrowed. VEU +16.1% for 2026, VT +14.1%, the S&P +12.8% — the ex-US lead over America is 3.3 points now, from four last week, because this was one of the weeks America carried. Two of the last three have been.

Korea is where the week resolved something — the only place it did. Last Saturday this letter wrote that a weekly close above 180 was still the confirmation of the breakout that began at the July low. On Friday the Korea fund closed 180.20 — the confirmation arrived, by twenty cents — after a week that ran 173.64 on Monday to 182.14 on Thursday with a 183.46 high on Friday. It is +85.4% on the year, and it extended that lead in the week after its sidecar crash. One asterisk belongs on the certificate: the KOSPI itself fell 1.79% in won this week — the fund’s dollar gain was the currency’s work, nearly three points of it. A confirmation delivered by the won is still a confirmation; it is also revocable by the won. Section 7 takes that thought apart.

Behind it the whole regional board inverted — again. Last week’s bottom four, the AI supply-chain corridor, are back on top: Taiwan +3.45% led the board (the TAIEX +2.45% in local terms), Korea +1.04%, Japan +0.72%, with Brazil +1.40% the only periphery line green in both weeks. Last week’s leaders — Hong Kong, Mexico, New Zealand, China — all gave it back. Breadth narrowed from twenty-one green of thirty-five to ten green of twenty-five red, and the best-to-worst spread compressed again: twelve points three weeks ago, seven last week, 6.75 now. A board that inverts weekly while its spread shrinks is not dispersing. It is rotating in place.

The cross-asset backdrop — last week’s engine, in reverse. The four hard-asset lines that carried the previous edition are this week’s bottom of the board: gold −3.42%, oil −3.67%, silver −4.30%, copper miners −0.18%; the bitcoin fund held +0.50% but gave back both its lines on Friday’s close. Every equity index that was sold last week was bought: the top-20 +0.87%, the top-30 +0.62%, the S&P +0.47%, QQQ +0.42%. The board’s leader was TLT, +1.01% — the long bond, in the week the Treasury’s doubled buybacks approach their start date — with the dollar +1.00% behind it. IEF +0.03% to 92.85, and section 2 has what that three-cent week actually decided.

The US sectors. Three of eleven closed green — and the three are the exact bottom of last week’s table: communications +1.43%, technology +1.30%, financials +1.08%. Last week’s green three — health care, energy, materials — sit in this week’s bottom five: XLV −1.98%, XLE −1.51%, XLB −0.67%. The full inversion, second week running. Sunday’s letter owns the tape beneath it; the geography is that the sectors that own physical things handed the week back to the sectors that own code and balance sheets.

The tech ETFs. The split the desk named two Fridays ago — semis down, software up — held and broadened. The five green lines are all the layer above the chip: software +5.93% (the board’s best), cybersecurity +3.91%, cloud +2.82%, internet +2.69%, AI applications +1.25%. The red sixteen are led down by the silicon again: XSD −3.29%, the worst line a second consecutive week, SMH −1.30%, the fabless vehicle −0.41% — each still carrying +45% to +54% years. Two weeks ago software held while semis fell 4.7 to 8.5 percent; this week software led outright while semis fell again. That is no longer one week’s split. It is a rotation with a direction inside the stack — and the pair board dates it: the software-to-semis ratio (IGV over SMH) bottomed on June 22 and is 52 percent off that low, while still sitting 46 percent below where the trailing year began. A two-month trend inside a one-year collapse: silicon owned the year, software owns the summer’s second half.

The global sectors. The table inverted for the second consecutive week — last week’s leaders are the bottom three (materials −0.29%, health care −1.95%, energy −2.34%), and the money went back up the growth end: communications +1.00%, financials +0.83%, technology +0.82%. The detail that matters most sits in the middle: materials set another new high on Tuesday at 118.49 — and then closed the week at 116.37, back under the February line (116.54) it had cleared just last Friday. Cleared, extended, un-cleared, inside five sessions. Financials closed 0.38% under its August 14 record — one green day from reclaiming it, the closest of the four sectors this letter tracks as the tape’s deciders.

Was the sector week global, or one region carrying the average? The house Sector Engine decomposes each of the eleven sectors into its four regional legs, and this week’s answer is: not global at all. Tech was green in three of four regions and red only in Europe (−2.9%); Asia-Pac DM was the greenest column on the board (communications +3.5%, financials +3.4%, tech +2.8%); and the sharpest single split sits in energy — the global cut fell 2.3% while Europe’s energy rose 1.8%, because the global vehicle is where the US barrel lives. Europe’s green cells this week were staples and energy: the defensive local bid underneath the euro’s give-back.

The Global Compass

Regions: the third breadth flip in four weeks. Broad in July, narrow into August 15, broad on August 22, narrow now — with the corridor and the periphery exchanging the lead each time, on a one-week cadence, while the spread compresses. Emerging beat developed a second week (VWO +0.56% against VEA −0.49%), but the composition flipped: last week the EM bid was China and the periphery while the corridor rested; this week it is the corridor again — Taiwan, Korea — with China soft. The read this letter has carried: the AI-supply-chain bid is cyclical inside a broadening market. The new evidence: the cycle length has shortened to a week, and neither side of it is going anywhere. That is what sideways looks like from the inside.

Sectors: risk-on everywhere except Europe. The engine’s cyclical-defensive spreads give the rotation a regime reading by region: the US +0.5% (both sides red on the week, cyclicals less so), Asia-Pac DM +1.1%, EM +0.7% — and Europe −0.4%, the only region where the defensives out-held the cyclicals. A week the hard assets were sold and the growth sectors caught the bid still read risk-on in three regions of four; the exception is the continent whose currency gave the week back.

Sectors: the leaders’ bench keeps clearing lines and losing them. Three weeks of materials read led, lagged, led-to-a-new-high; this week adds made-another-high-and-closed-back-under-the-old-one. Health care went leader to laggard on the same one-week cadence as everything else. The two constants: energy remains its own story (the barrel, −3.67% this week, +87.5% on the year), and the growth sectors — tech, comms, financials — caught the rotation this week without any of them making a new high. A board where the laggards keep leading and the leaders keep resting is a board that is churning, not trending.

Stay home vs go global — the US view. America won the week: SPY +0.47%, VT +0.15%, VEU −0.30% — the second stay-home week in three. The year still reads the other way: +16.1% against +14.1% against +12.8%, ex-US ahead by 3.3 points, from four. Two readings, both honest: the trend is intact, and it is being sanded down a half-point at a time. The weekly closes on VEU’s new board — 86.08 above, 85.23 below — will say which one is the signal.

Stay home vs go global — the Europe view: the mask reversed. Last week the dollar wrapper rose while every European index fell, because the euro was bid. This week the exact inverse: the European fund fell 0.80% while the DAX gained 1.66% and the Euro Stoxx 50 closed green — because the euro gave it back. The hedged wrapper — the same equities, euro stripped — gained 0.77% against the unhedged fund’s −0.80%. Same lesson, opposite sign, one week apart: a dollar-listed country fund is equity plus currency, and this week the equity was the better half. The exception to everything: Germany. EWG closed Friday at a new 52-week high — green in both currencies — while France was the worst big-Europe line in both (EWQ −1.70%, the CAC −0.98%), in the same week France still borrowed dearer than Italy at the long end. The continent’s two core markets are now pointing in opposite directions, and the bond market agrees with the order. And the five-year chart adds the structural version of the same lesson: over the full window the hedged wrapper is up 62.9% against the dollar wrapper’s 53.2% — across half a decade, the euro has been a cost to the dollar-based holder of Europe, week-to-week masks notwithstanding. Both wrappers sit at the top rails of their multi-year channels.

Stay home vs go global — the Asia view: the corridor answered. Last week’s question was whether the sidecar was the top of the run or the rest inside it. The week answered: Taiwan led the entire regional board, Japan closed green, and Korea delivered the weekly close above 180 this letter asked for — with Tuesday’s 170.05 invalidation line never approached. The corridor that was the bottom four a week ago is the top of the table. The asterisks: the KOSPI’s own week was red in won, and the corridor’s US-listed wrappers were paid partly by Asian currencies. The re-rating question from July is now answered as far as price can answer it — the July low held, the sidecar low held, the line is cleared on a weekly close. What remains open is only whether it holds above it.

The engine’s Asia AI spreads put numbers on the corridor’s internal order: Taiwan over Korea +2.4% on the week — logic leading memory — and Korea itself +2.3% over global semis. The corridor’s country wrappers beat the semis complex even as the memory vehicle sat under its line all week: the same divergence, measured three ways.

Stay tech vs go broad. Mixed, for the first time in three weeks — which is itself the sideways signature. The Nasdaq 100 +0.42% against the S&P’s +0.47%: a dead heat. Global tech +0.82% against the world’s +0.15%: tech ahead. Technology the second-best US sector; the semis the worst tech lines; software the best. Tech did not lead this week and did not lag it — it rotated internally, silicon to software, and the aggregate cancelled out.

Momentum vs defensive — both ends made the same mistake. International min-vol closed through its February high on Tuesday — 94.94 against 94.87 — and faded to 93.80 by Friday, −0.88% on the week. Global min-vol printed a new high the same day (127.66) and kept two cents of it. International momentum never threatened its failed August high at all: 53.32, −1.17%, a third week below the breakout it took and lost. So the defensive end keeps making highs and not holding them, and the aggressive end keeps not making them — the same postponement shape as the world index itself, expressed as a factor pair. On the year momentum still leads min-vol +11.2% against +8.8%; the regime is intact and the week, again, went against it.

One more pair, gone quiet. EAFE value −0.58% against EAFE growth −0.54% — a dead heat this week after two weeks of value leading. On the year value keeps the argument, +14.5% against +9.7%. Last week: value with min-vol, a rotation toward cheap and quiet. This week both factor pairs flattened out entirely — which in a week of violent group rotation means the rotation ran through groups, not styles. The money changed neighborhoods, not risk appetite.

The Closelook letters — where this one sits. The house thesis, compressed: the stock market is a growing system at the aggregate level in which most constituents slowly fade while a small group massively outperforms — and that group changes dynamically; it never stays static. Own the aggregate, know the current winner group, watch for the rotation. Right now the winner group is the AI stack, and the live question is which of its layers — building, operating, using — earns the next leg. 2 · The State

The mechanism, named: sideways with the rotor running. Put the two weeks side by side. Every board this letter builds — regions, US sectors, global sectors, tech, cross-asset — fully inverted from last week to this one, the second consecutive full inversion. The regional spread compressed to under seven points. Both factor pairs went flat. The world index printed a new record close on Tuesday, a new record print on Friday, and finished the week down a third of a percent, its third straight week of triggering marks in both directions and resolving nothing on the weekly close. A market in which everything rotates and nothing travels is not directionless by accident — it is a market that has genuinely not decided, and is burning energy in place while it waits. The honest name for it is sideways; the honest observation is that sideways at this rotation speed does not usually last long.

What did choose: the two quiet tells, both, in the same direction. The bond market first. IEF spent the middle of the week above the reclaim line — 93.51 on Tuesday, comfortably through 93.17 — and closed Friday at 92.85: the third consecutive failed weekly reclaim, each failure from a higher midweek push than the last. TLT still holds its own floor at 81.2 (82.88, +1.01% — the board’s best line). The structure this letter’s Thursday companion named stands: the long bond holds, the belly keeps refusing, and the house’s bond veto over the equity read stays engaged. Then the yen. Dollar-yen rose every single session of the week and closed at 160.01, the first weekly close through the 159.5 wire — after four weeks of refusal and one week of break-and-reverse. The falsifier at 158.83 was never approached. A level that held for a month, failed to break once, and then broke on a straight five-session climb is not noise; it is the carry loop repricing. Two tells, one direction: the funding side of this bull market got more expensive this week, quietly, while the equity side spun in place.

The podium turned hawkish, and the hard assets heard it. Kevin Warsh’s first Jackson Hole keynote as chair, Friday morning: a vow on the 2% target, prices-first framing, and the bet that AI will aid labor supply rather than hollow it. Hammack, separately, called for hikes; the July minutes’ three dissents already leaned that way. The reading the previous edition flagged as the week’s central tension — hard assets priced for an easing cycle against a central bank leaning hawkish — resolved this week in the hawks’ favor: gold fell 3.4% with Friday’s keynote the sharpest session, the miners fell near four percent that day, oil and silver gave back four to six days of gains, and the dollar rose a full percent. Gold spot peaked Monday at 4,680 and closed Friday at 4,459 — within $59 of the 4,400 falsifier the diary carries, without breaking it. The wave count survives; the week’s leg of it does not.

One session, not a week — and a pattern with a memory inside it. The keynote landed Friday morning: the direction it showed had exactly one session to play out, which is the honest limit on everything written about it here. But inside that one session, the tape produced something this letter has seen before. The old-guard megacaps caught the bid against the day’s trend — Amazon +3.7%, Apple +2.2%, Alphabet +2.1%, Microsoft +2.0% — while Nvidia fell 4.6% and the broad tape sold its beats. Mag-7-ex-chips outperformance on a hawkish day is what previous rate-hike stretches looked like: when the discount rate leans up, the market treats the balance-sheet giants — self-funding, cash-rich, duration-light in their financing — as the defensive growth asset, and the capital-hungry end of the same trade as the casualty. One Friday is one Friday. It is also the exact rhyme.

The two hard-asset charts, read the house way. Gold: the impulse out of the consolidation stalled mid-air — a $220 retreat from Monday’s high that stopped just short of the line that would end the count. 4,400 remains the falsifier, now $59 below the market instead of comfortably beneath it. Bitcoin: the coin spent the entire week inside the 77,000–83,000 resistance zone — highs of 81,235 Tuesday and 81,347 Friday, a close at 77,830, the zone’s floor. Two pushes into the middle of the band, two fades, no exit in either direction. One hedge is standing at its falsifier; the other is standing in its zone. Both are exactly where a sideways market would leave them.

Seoul: the aftermath, and the certificate with an asterisk. The buyback session’s low was never revisited. The fund walked 173.64 → 180.15 → 179.18 → 182.14 and closed the week at 180.20 — through the line, on the close that counts, with Friday’s high at 183.46. The KOSPI itself, though, fell 1.79% in won: the dollar confirmation was written mostly by the currency. The structural read from two weeks ago — breakout, consolidation above the broken channel, completed double bottom, resistance at 180 — now has its confirmation candle. What it does not yet have is a week held above the line, and the won now shares custody of that outcome with the equities.

Europe, two machines, one week on. The voting machine reversed: Paris red again (−0.98%, a 8,320 print on Thursday), but Frankfurt +1.66%, Madrid +0.40%, the Euro Stoxx +0.36% — and the euro fell, so the dollar wrappers showed the opposite (VGK −0.80% off Tuesday’s record 93.19). The weighing machine barely moved and therefore said the most: France 4.117%, Italy 4.113% — the inversion held a second week, by four tenths of a basis point. The gold ledger from last week’s edition still frames it: every leg down in gold now works the other way, mechanically weakening the net position of the gold-holding sovereigns — a −3.4% gold week is, at the margin, a worse week for the Italy side of that ledger than the France side, and the spread narrowed accordingly. Meanwhile Japan’s 30-year printed another era high at 4.125% in the same five sessions the yen broke its wire — the pressure on the sovereign board moved from the Atlantic to the Pacific this week. The board’s own composite agrees in level and disagrees in direction: SPI +0.35, long-end-led still, but cooling from +0.42 — because the US long end rallied into the buyback window while Japan’s sold. One sovereign complex exhaling, another inhaling.

The macro print. Nvidia’s Wednesday report is Sunday’s property in detail; its geography belongs here. Revenue of $96 billion against a $92 billion consensus — an eleventh consecutive double beat — and a fiscal-2028 outlook the CEO framed as supply-capped: demand above 70% growth, shipping capacity at 70%. The corridor traded it exactly the way this sideways tape trades everything: paid Thursday (+8.7%), half-refunded Friday (−4.6%). And the rest of Thursday night’s beats — a beat-and-raise from the backup vendor, double beats across the software names — were sold outright in Friday daylight. The bar has moved: beats no longer clear it. A market that will not pay for good prints is the same market that will not hold its own record closes; section 6 says what follows from that if it persists.

Hold both halves. The equity boards rotated in place for a second week and resolved nothing; the funding tells — the belly of the US curve, the yen, Japan’s long end — all hardened in the same direction. Sideways is the tape’s answer. It is not the macro’s.

The structural read — the wave count, five years up. Zoom out and the three-week stall changes character. From the October 2022 low the house count on the world ex-US reads waves 1 and 2 complete and wave 3 still progressing — price riding the upper half of a four-year channel, with the record shelf at 85.8–86.3 sitting inside an advance whose projection runs higher. On this count, the postponement is a pause in a third wave, not a topping structure — which is the structural version of the September base case in section 4: consolidation would be normal, and anything better is constructive. The count keeps its own falsifier: it fails at the channel, not at the record shelf — the section-4 ladder marks where that argument would begin. Probability, not prophecy.

3 · The Outlook

The three-index read — the money went back into the thesis, and picked its lightest layer. We read the three together because they are three stages of one spend: capex (Rubin Build-Out, what gets built), opex (Agentic Ecosystem, what it costs to run), applications (Agentic Winners, what gets sold on top).

Applications +4.68% on the week — all nine of its sub-indices green — and now −0.12% on the year: one ordinary week from going green for the first time since January. Opex +1.59% and +60.9%. Capex −1.77% and +87.1%. The order of the last two weeks holds: money keeps leaving the building layer and arriving in the selling layer. What changed is the control group.

The control group flipped — and that is the week’s most important internal. Last week HALO — our growth index carrying no AI thesis — closed flat while capex and opex fell seven and six percent: an AI unwind, not a growth unwind. This week HALO fell 2.25% while applications rose 4.68% and opex rose 1.59%. The mirror image: an AI bid inside a growth sell. Put the two weeks together and the shape is not “risk on, risk off” — it is money oscillating between the AI stack and everything else on the same one-week cadence as the regional and sector boards, with the application layer the only place that was bought in both. Inside HALO the week was broad and red: longevity — last week’s best — fell 3.2%, speculative −7.4%, space −7.3%; only Asia-Pacific and payments closed green.

Read the three windows together, because the disagreement is still the signal. On the year capex leads and it is not close: +87.1% against +60.9% against −0.12%. On the month the inversion has completed: applications +20.4%, opex +13.4%, capex +5.9%. On the week, the month’s order again. Every short window now points the same way — down-stack, toward the layer that sells — while the year still belongs to the layer that builds. This is what a leadership handoff looks like while it is still deniable.

The correction lows, re-measured. Applications — which bottomed first, on July 23 — is now +32.3% off its low, extending from +26.4% a week ago. Capex, off its July 29 low, slipped to +12.6% from +14.7%; opex improved to +17.0%. The spring pattern — the index that bottoms first goes on to lead — has now had its candidate confirmed for four consecutive weeks. Probability, not prophecy.

The structural line kept moving the tilt’s way. Applications closed 3.05% below its January high — from 7.4% below a week ago; it recovered more than half its remaining gap in one week. Opex sits 5.8% below its August 13 high. Capex remains 22.4% below June — the only layer whose peak is receding rather than approaching. The tilt this letter announced three weeks ago toward the lighter layers was half-wrong last week; this week it was fully right.

Inside capex: the fab floor stayed heavy, the design lane lit up. The best line in the buildout was EDA & chip IP, +5.98% — the design-software lane, the same one Friday’s chart pick rode — with design +3.55% and chip architects +2.34% behind it: the software of the buildout caught the software bid. The bottom is unchanged in character: DC construction −6.69%, storage −6.18%, fab subsystems −5.15%, testing & metrology −5.04%. And the sharpest single reversal on any board: HBM memory, last week’s only green sub-index at +3.78%, fell 4.01% into the bottom five — in the week Korea’s fund confirmed its breakout. The corridor’s wrappers and the corridor’s business diverged this week; one of them is early.

Inside opex: the security stack got paid. Identity, trust & governance +13.66% — the best sub-index in the entire four-family system — on the week the identity vendor’s print landed a double beat with raised guidance; operations & observability +5.84%, govern & secure +5.74%, agentic security +3.72%. The bottom: compute operators −4.02%, foundation models −3.40% (still +723% on the year), substrate −3.01%. The layer that runs AI split internally the same way tech did: the code got bought, the compute got sold.

Inside applications: everything, everywhere. All nine sub-indices green — control plane +7.87%, enterprise +5.84%, application leaders +5.51%, and megacap gateway +3.38%, green again after two red weeks, still the only sub-index positive on the year (+10.6%). No rotation inside the layer this week; the whole layer was bought. Asia’s constituents led at +6.47%.

The regime gauge. The Money Temperature instrument board sits at 57, four points warmer than a week ago, the second consecutive warming week — still the transition band, but moving. Equities went sideways, hard assets fell, and the gauge warmed anyway: the appetite the board is reading is the rotation itself — money moving, not money leaving.

1 · This Week’s Action

The global view. The ex-US world index closed the week at 85.69, up 0.01% — unchanged to the cent — and the flattest number on this page is hiding the busiest one. On Monday it closed 85.85, a new record close, with an intraday print at 86.22 that took out the record print this letter carried as the last unbroken mark. On Tuesday it closed 84.43, under the 85.23 line the same letter had named as the falsifier. Both levels triggered inside one week; by Friday it was back between them. The all-world index closed 160.77, down 0.91%; the S&P lost 1.37%, the Nasdaq 100 2.41%.

The year has not changed its mind either. VEU +16.5% for 2026, VT +14.0%, the S&P +12.3% — ex-US leads owning America by four points now rather than last week’s two and a half, because the week’s order went back to the one the year has kept: the ex-US cut beat the all-world cut, which beat America. Last Saturday’s “carrying America helped” lasted exactly one week.

Korea is where the week happened again — in the other direction. On Wednesday in Seoul the KOSPI fell 5.8% on the close and the exchange activated its sidecar, halting program sell orders; Samsung fell 7.8%, SK hynix 9.8%. On Thursday it rose 5.9% — SK hynix +12.7% on a 40-trillion-won buyback-and-cancellation announcement, the largest ever by a Korean listed company, Samsung +9.5%. In dollar terms the Korea fund closed Monday at 185.10 — through the 180 line this letter named as the most consequential on the book, with a high of 190.11 — then Tuesday at 170.05, eight percent lower in one session, then recovered to 178.34 on Friday: −0.78% on the week, back under the line, still +83.4% on the year.

Behind it the whole regional board inverted. Last week’s top four — Korea +8.2%, Taiwan +3.9%, the Netherlands +3.5%, Japan +1.4% — are this week’s bottom four: Japan −3.09%, the Netherlands −3.00%, Taiwan −2.59%, Korea −0.78%. Last week’s two worst lines, China and Brazil, sit in this week’s top five: Hong Kong +4.29%, Brazil +3.33%, Mexico +3.16%, New Zealand +2.89%, China +2.78%. Twenty-one of thirty-five funds closed green — broader than last week’s one-corridor table — and the spread from best to worst compressed to seven points from twelve. Emerging beat developed: VWO +0.57% against VEA −0.22%.

The cross-asset backdrop. The bitcoin fund gained 22.59% — the strongest line on any board this week — and is back to −12.0% on the year from −28.2% seven days ago. Copper miners +10.37%, silver +7.25%, oil +6.35% (now +94.7% for 2026), gold +5.45% to 423.36. Every hard asset on the board was bought and every equity index on it was sold: the Nasdaq top-30 −2.94%, QQQ −2.41%, the top-20 −1.74%, the S&P −1.37%. The dollar lost 0.75%. IEF −0.24% to 92.82; TLT flat at 82.05.

The US sectors. Three of eleven closed green, and the three are the same set the global cut produced: health care +4.33%, energy +2.79%, materials +1.90%. The bottom three are the buildout pair and its neighbour — technology −3.53%, utilities −3.48%, industrials −3.36%. Chips and the power to run them fell together. Sunday’s letter owns the tape and its levels; the geography of it is that the three sectors that rose are the three that own physical things.

The tech ETFs. Last week’s table, inverted. The four lines that led seven days ago all reversed: WTAI +4.69% became −4.43%, cloud +4.18% became −1.30%, data-centre REITs +3.60% became −3.44%, quantum +3.40% became −5.17%. Semis were the worst of the board — XSD −8.46%, fabless −6.15%, SMH −4.66% — and every one of them still sits between +45% and +55% on the year. The five green lines are a list of what was not tech last week: crypto equities +9.68% (with the coin), ARKK +6.30%, fintech +2.95%, lithium +1.83%, uranium +1.56%. Software, −0.68%, held — the semis-down, software-up split the desk named on Friday’s tape.

The global sectors. Materials +4.86% led — and closed at 116.71, through the February high this letter flagged last week as the one laggard still to clear. Health care +4.34%, energy +3.19%. At the other end global tech −2.70% (139.46, 6.9% below its June peak), industrials −2.75% and financials −1.21% — both of last week’s new-high sectors gave it back the sessions after they set them, 206.84 to 201.16 and 135.07 to 133.44. Utilities −2.05%, consumer discretionary −0.98% (still the year’s laggard at −2.19%).

The Global Compass

Regions: the corridor gave way, the periphery came back. Last week this board recorded breadth collapsing into one supply-chain corridor while the periphery went quiet and the two big non-AI emerging markets went backwards. This week is the exact inverse: the corridor is the bottom of the table, twenty-one of thirty-five lines are green, and China and Brazil lead. Broadening in July, narrowing last week, broadening again now. The read is the one this letter has been circling: the AI-supply-chain bid is cyclical inside a broadening market — and when it rests, the rest of the world does not fall with it. It rises.

Sectors: materials answered, energy held, tech handed back. Seven days ago: energy answered at +5.67%, materials was the second-worst line at −1.50%, and this letter wrote that a metals bid that leads one week and lags the next “was a move, not a regime”. Three weeks on the sequence reads led, lagged, led to a new high — materials +4.86% and through February, with copper miners +10.37% underneath it. A move with a new high behind it is more than a move. Energy +3.19% held; tech −2.70% handed back.

Stay home vs go global — the US view. One reading this week, not two. On the week: VEU +0.01%, VT −0.91%, SPY −1.37% — the ex-US cut beat America by 1.4 points in a down week. On the year: +16.5%, +14.0%, +12.3%. Last week the ex-US trade “lost the argument about this particular week”; this week it won it back, and the year’s lead widened. That is what a trend does when the counter-week passes.

Stay home vs go global — the Europe view: the currency mask. The European fund closed 92.72, up 0.38%, a new 52-week closing high — in a week Paris fell 1.76%, Frankfurt 1.15%, Madrid 0.97% and the Euro Stoxx 50 1.18%, and Paris ran seven straight red sessions before Friday’s +0.37% reset. The currency-hedged wrapper — the same equities with the euro stripped out — lost 1.60%. The UK fund +1.41% to its own new high. A dollar-based holder of Europe never saw the week Europeans had; the euro absorbed it. Last week this letter’s standing view was that the bid is a position in a chain, not a continent. This week’s version: Europe’s dollar wrapper is bid because the euro is bid, not because the equities are. Read the hedged line next to the unhedged one before calling Europe strong.

Stay home vs go global — the Asia view: the corridor rested, violently. Japan −3.09% (−3.93% in yen), Taiwan −2.59%, Korea −0.78% with an eight-percent down session inside it; China +2.78%, Hong Kong +4.29%. Last week’s question was whether July ended the re-rating or merely rested it, and this letter wrote that the week “voted rest — emphatically, and narrowly”. This week the rest arrived as a sidecar. The Korea fund sits 19% below its June high and the KOSPI 24% below its own; the July lows sit well below Tuesday’s 170. The question is unchanged. The air pocket inside it is new.

Stay tech vs go broad. Broad beat tech in both cuts this week: the Nasdaq 100 −2.41% against the S&P’s −1.37%, global tech −2.70% against the world’s −0.91%, technology the worst US sector, five green lines in twenty-one on the tech board. Last week was “broadening and leadership at once, with a hole where the largest names sit”. This week the hole widened and the leadership left.

Momentum vs defensive — the global cut, and the answer to last week’s test. Last Saturday international momentum sat a fifth of one percent under its June high and this letter wrote that it needed a close through to confirm. On Monday it closed 54.64 — through 54.35. By Friday it closed 53.95, −0.55% on the week, back below the old high. A breakout tested, taken, and failed inside five sessions. At the other end international min-vol +1.04% to 94.63 — a quarter of one percent under its February peak — and global min-vol closed at a new high, 127.21. So the defensive end made a high and the aggressive end failed one: the reverse of last week’s “both ends rising” barbell, and the same shape the US pair printed (Sunday’s letter owns that one). On the year momentum still leads min-vol, +12.5% against +9.7% — the regime is not over. The week went against it.

One more pair, still pointing the other way. EAFE value +0.32% against EAFE growth −0.83% on the week, and on the year value leads +15.2% against +10.3%. Last week outside America belonged to value and momentum at once; this week it belonged to value and min-vol. Value with momentum is a bull broadening; value with min-vol is a rotation toward what is cheap and quiet. One week does not make the second a regime. It does say which way the first one bends under pressure.

The Closelook letters — where this one sits. 2 · The State

The mechanism, named: a record that lasted a day. Last Saturday this letter called Thursday’s 85.71 “a level taken on paper and an open question in practice”, and set two marks to settle it: a weekly close above 85.74 to confirm, a close back under 85.23 to falsify. Monday answered the first — 85.85 at the close, 86.22 at the high, both records. Tuesday answered the second — 84.43, below the support. The week then spent three sessions inside a 1.8-point range and closed at 85.69: above the old record close, below the new one. A market that triggers both its confirmation and its falsifier in forty-eight hours and then declines to choose has not broken out and has not failed. It has postponed.

The hard-asset bid is the engine this week, and it has a mechanism. On Wednesday the Treasury doubled its long-end buybacks — from $2 billion to $4 billion per operation across the 10-to-30-year sectors, September 9 through November 4 — funded with bills. Yields fell on the announcement and reversed back up through it within a session: the 30-year was back at 5.23% by Thursday midday and 5.25% by Friday morning, the 10-year at 4.70%, and by Friday the Treasury Secretary was talking about larger buybacks and a fiscal plan. Gold went through 4,400 the same day and kept going — GLD +5.45% on the week, futures above 4,600 by Friday morning; the bitcoin fund +22.59%; copper miners +10.37%, silver +7.25%, oil +6.35%. Two assets that share nothing as instruments moved together on one reading: the entity that issues duration is retiring it, and will keep reaching for the tool. The Fed’s own minutes, released the same afternoon, leaned the other way — “many participants” saw scope for higher rates, and the July hold drew three dissents for a hike. A hard-asset bid priced the way an easing cycle is usually priced, against a central bank leaning hawkish, is the week’s central tension.

The two hard-asset charts, read the house way. Gold: the next wave up may be unfolding — the move through 4,400 on the buyback day and the follow-through to 4,600 is the shape an impulse takes out of a consolidation, and the falsifier the diary has held, a break below 4,400, is now below the market rather than above it. Bitcoin: the year-long down channel is broken, and the coin sits at the resistance zone between 77,000 and 83,000 that the diary has carried for weeks — Friday’s high of 79,464 is inside it, not through it. One hedge has cleared its line; the other is standing at it. Probability, not prophecy.

Seoul: the sidecar and the buyback. The Korea fund went through 180 on Monday, to 185.10 with a 190.11 high. On Wednesday in Seoul the KOSPI fell 5.8%, the exchange halted program selling, Samsung lost 7.8% and SK hynix 9.8%; the fund closed that US session at 170.05, eight percent lower. On Thursday the index rose 5.9% and SK hynix 12.7% on a 40-trillion-won buyback and cancellation — the same instrument the Treasury reached for the same night, at a different scale. Friday: 178.34, −0.78% on the week. Last week’s single most consequential level on the book was taken on Monday and lost by Tuesday, and the weekly close that confirms it did not arrive. “Whether a five-day vertical run takes a first rest” was last week’s question. It took one, in a session, at eight percent.

Europe, two machines. Thursday’s Pulse put it as the voting machine and the weighing machine, and the week’s finals kept the frame. The voting machine: Paris seven straight red sessions, Madrid seven, the Euro Stoxx 50 five, Frankfurt four; on the week the CAC −1.76%, the DAX −1.15%, the IBEX −0.97%, the Euro Stoxx −1.18%, the hedged wrapper −1.60%. The dollar wrapper +0.38% to a new high, because the euro was bid. The weighing machine: the long end. On the house’s new G7 sovereign board, France’s 10-year at 4.13% trades above Italy’s at 4.09% — the risk ranking that held for the whole post-crisis era, inverted without an announcement. The UK 30-year 5.81%, the US 30-year 5.275%, and Japan’s 30-year at 4.065% — the highest of the era, and the line that moved most on Friday. The board’s equal-weight 30-year sits at 4.659%, the 10s30s curve at 67 basis points; the pressure composite reads +0.42, long-end-led — term premium and fiscal supply, not rate expectations.

The ledger behind the ranking. Count the gold and the ranking stops looking strange. Italy carries about 135% of GDP gross and roughly 122% after deducting the Banca d’Italia’s 2,452 tonnes — recently worth near €285 billion; France about 113% gross and 104.7% on its own published net measure, which does not consolidate the central bank’s nearly identical 2,437 tonnes; Japan 233% gross and about 133% net on the IMF’s ledger, with roughly 88% of it held at home and the foreign share of long JGBs nearer 6%. Every leg higher in gold mechanically strengthens the net position of the gold-holding sovereigns — which is one reason the gold bull and the France-over-Italy print are on the same page this week, and why France occupies the board more than Italy does.

Both quiet tells, again — and one of them broke. IEF reclaimed 93.17 on Wednesday on the buyback, closed 93.38, and gave it back: 92.82 on Friday, a second consecutive failed weekly reclaim. Dollar-yen, which had refused 159.5 for four straight weeks, broke it on Tuesday — 159.63 at the close, 159.77 at the high — and reversed: 158.18 on Wednesday, 158.91 on Friday, eight pips above the 158.83 line the house set mid-week as the first falsifier. A break that cannot hold a day is a different kind of tell from a refusal: the level is no longer a ceiling, but the far side of it was not a floor either.

The macro print. Walmart beat on revenue and earnings on Thursday, raised its sales and operating-income outlook, guided full-year earnings under the street, printed US comparable sales of 2.6% against the 3.5% expected — and fell 9.15%. Sunday’s letter owns that print and what it says about the consumer. Its geography belongs here: the same barrel that has the energy sector +42% on the year is the force draining the shopper Walmart just reported on. Oil +6.35% on the week, Brent up five straight sessions into Wednesday, the Middle East wires doing the work.

Hold both halves. The world index postponed its decision; the hard assets made theirs. The bond market dissented a second week; the yen broke and came back. Europe rose in one currency and fell in another.

The structural read — Korea’s chart, one week on. Last week: a clean breakout, consolidation above the broken channel line, a completed double bottom, a sharp run to major resistance at 180. This week the chart added a candle that matters: through 180 on Monday to 185, a 190 high, then an eight-percent session back to 170, then a recovery to 178. The structure is not broken — Tuesday’s low sits well above the 30 July low, and the fund ended the week a quarter of a point under the line rather than far beneath it. But “the chart has earned the benefit of the doubt; it has not yet been given the confirmation” is now true with an air pocket inside it. A weekly close above 180 is still the confirmation. A close under 170.05 would say the sidecar was the top of the run, not the rest in it.

3 · The Outlook

The three-index read — the lightest layer rose, the heavy layers bled. We read the three together because they are three stages of one spend: capex (Rubin Build-Out, what gets built), opex (Agentic Ecosystem, what it costs to run), applications (Agentic Winners, what gets sold on top).

Applications +2.66% on the week, −4.6% on the year. Opex −6.46% and +58.4%. Capex −7.27% and +90.5%. Last week the middle stage led at +7.5%; this week it lost 6.5%, the buildout lost 7.3%, and the only index that rose is the one that sells on top of both. Money came out of building and running this week and stayed in selling — which is the direction the whole thesis says the money eventually travels, arriving in the least flattering way.

Read the three windows together, because the disagreement is the signal. On the year capex leads and it is not close: +90.5% against opex’s +58.4% and applications’ −4.6%. On the month the order inverts further than last week — applications +26.4%, opex +14.3%, capex −3.8% — the buildout is now negative over a month. On the week the order is the month’s order. Steady relative strength in the application layer across every short window; a dominant year and a fading quarter in the buildout; the operating layer in between, and this week closer to the buildout than to the applications.

The correction lows, re-measured. Capex and opex both bottomed on 29 July and are now +14.7% and +15.2% off those lows — a week ago they were +23.6% and +23.1%; more than a third of the recovery came out in five sessions. Applications bottomed on 23 July and is +26.4% off its low, from +31.2% — the smallest give-back of the three, in the index that refused the others’ later low. The pattern from the spring — the index that bottoms first goes on to lead — keeps its candidate. Probability, not prophecy.

The structural line moved against the tilt — half of it. Last week: opex and applications had both cleared their summer highs, capex sat 13.7% below its June peak. This week capex is 21.0% below that peak; opex is 7.3% below a high it set last Thursday, the 13th; applications is 7.4% below its January high and still above the summer one. The tilt this letter announced toward the two lighter layers got the applications half right this week and the opex half wrong: the layer it tilted away from fell 7.3%, the layer it tilted toward fell 6.5%, the lightest rose. The tape has not overturned the argument. It has taken back a third of the advance that confirmed it.

Inside capex: memory held, the fab floor did not. One sub-index green of twenty-four: HBM Memory +3.78%, +178% on the year — what Korea exports, at the top of the table again in the week Korea crashed, with SK hynix’s buyback underneath it. Storage −4.16% after last week’s +21%. The bottom is the fab floor: wafer processing −11.25%, testing and metrology −10.66%, foundry −10.35%, fab subsystems −9.88%. US constituents −8.61%, Japan −6.05%, Europe −7.14% — no region hid.

Inside opex: the names that made 2026 led the way down. Foundation Models −11.02% against +753% on the year — last week they “did nothing in the week their infrastructure was bought”; this week they were the worst line. Substrate −9.29%, edge −9.22%, compute operators −9.19%, runtime −8.25%. The best was operations and observability at −3.70%, then data and memory −3.88%. Europe’s constituents −11.09%.

Inside applications: buying what it sold, selling what it owned — again. Application Leaders +6.05%, Enterprise +4.11%, Control Plane +2.81% — the three that are most negative on the year led the week. Megacap Gateway −2.47%, the only sub-index positive for 2026 at +6.9%, red for a second week. The applications layer spent a second week rotating out of its one winner into its four losers.

The control group. HALO — our growth index carrying no AI thesis — closed the week flat, +0.01%. Against capex −7.3% and opex −6.5%, that settles what kind of week this was: an AI unwind, not a growth unwind — the mirror image of last week’s “an AI bid, not a growth bid”. Inside it longevity and healthspan +5.53%, circular economy +3.61%, better food +3.02%, nuclear +2.80%; space and satellite −8.02%, autonomous defense and drones −7.01% after being last week’s best, energy transition −6.41%. The regime gauge. The Money Temperature instrument board sits at 53, two points warmer than a week ago, still the middle of its range and still labelled transition. Equities fell and the gauge warmed; the hard-asset bid is risk appetite by another name, and the board read it as such.

1 · This Week’s Action

The global view. The ex-US world index closed the week at 85.68, up 0.54%; the all-world index at 162.25, up 0.59%. Two flat numbers — and on Thursday the first of them printed 85.71, taking out the record close this letter has been marking since June.

The year underneath those numbers has not changed its mind. VEU is +16.5% for 2026, VT +15.0%, the S&P +13.9%. Owning everything outside America still leads owning America; owning the whole world sits between the two. But read the week rather than the year and the order inverts — VT beat VEU. Including America helped this week, which is the first thing this ratio has done in America’s favour in some time, and it is worth marking before it is explained away.

Korea is where the week actually happened. Seoul gained 8.22% in dollar terms — the strongest single-region week on this board all year, and now +84.9% for 2026. It entered a bull market on Thursday and ran a fourth day on Friday, more than 22% above its 30 July low.

Behind it, Taiwan +3.86% (+68.5% on the year) and — the board’s genuine surprise — the Netherlands +3.47%, Europe’s single-country lithography proxy, third on a thirty-five-fund table. Then Japan +1.35%. At the other end: China −3.54% and Brazil −3.99%, the two large non-AI emerging markets, falling in the same five sessions Korea ran.

Twelve points from best to worst, while the world index moved half a percent. The average did not describe a quiet week. It concealed a violent one.

The cross-asset backdrop. Oil was the mover: USO +7.31%, taking back nearly all of last week’s 8.7% fall, and now +83.1% on the year — the single strongest line on this board in 2026. Silver added 1.70%, gold 0.76% after rejecting 4,400 a second time. Against that, copper miners lost 2.65% and bitcoin’s fund lost 3.18%, leaving it −28.2% on the year while every equity index it is compared to sits green.

The bond end went the wrong way for the equity story: TLT −0.87%, closing at 82.04 within five cents of its 52-week low, and IEF −0.14% at 93.04. The dollar barely moved, +0.14%.

The US sectors. Energy ran away with it at +7.67%, and the honest reason is the barrel rather than a thesis — crude round-tripped, and the equities went with it. Utilities +1.61% and communications +1.53% followed. Only two of eleven closed red, and they were the demand-facing ends: materials −0.61% and discretionary −1.38%.

The tech ETFs. The AI-infrastructure cut led — WTAI +4.69%, cloud +4.18%, data-centre REITs +3.60%, quantum +3.40%. Software managed +1.35% and remains −1.5% on the year, the board’s reminder that the software de-rating has not been repaired by a good fortnight. Semis added just +0.88% despite sitting +63.2% for 2026.

The bottom is the tell: fabless semis −1.44% and small-cap semis −0.07%, both red in a green group, both up more than 55% on the year. The names that ran hardest into this week did the least in it.

The global sectors. The same crude bounce, one layer out: global energy +5.67%, two points behind the American cut. Global tech +1.75% followed, ahead of the world’s +0.59% but far short of the US tech tape — an American move wearing a global label.

Then a flat middle — industrials +0.78%, financials +0.30%, utilities +0.22%, healthcare +0.13% — and two red lines that both matter. Global materials −1.50% reverses last week’s headline directly: seven days ago materials seized the month outright on the metals bid, and this week handed it back. Global consumer discretionary −1.59% was the board’s worst, matching the US table’s own worst line. Discretionary weakest in both cuts, in a week of two cool inflation prints, is the demand signal Friday’s Michigan number then confirmed.

The Global Compass

Regions: the leaders narrowed rather than broadened. Last week this board printed twenty-six of twenty-nine funds green and we called it the broadest participation since spring. This week inverted it: breadth collapsed into one corridor, the periphery went quiet, and the two big non-AI emerging markets went backwards. One week of concentration does not undo a month of broadening — but the broadening stopped paying, and that is the opposite of last week’s read.

Sectors: energy answered, materials gave it all back. Last week recorded global tech retaking the year’s lead from energy, with materials seizing the month on the metals bid. Five sessions later energy has answered at +5.67% globally and +7.67% in the US, and materials is the second-worst line at −1.50%. A metals bid that leads one week and lags the next was a move, not a regime.

Stay home vs go global — the US view. Both readings belong on the page because they disagree. On the week: VEU +0.54%, VT +0.59%, SPY +0.40% — the ex-US cut beat America, but the all-world cut beat them both, so carrying America helped. On the year: VEU +16.5%, VT +15.0%, SPY +13.9% — the ex-US case is intact and leads by two and a half points. The honest summary is that the ex-US trade is winning 2026 and lost the argument about this particular week, which is what a real trend looks like from close range.

Stay home vs go global — the Europe view. The bloc managed +0.33% against the world’s +0.59% — participation without leadership, unchanged for three years at ratio level. But the Netherlands printed +3.47%. Europe did not join this week’s bid; one Dutch supply-chain position did. That is the same sentence Korea and China are writing at the two ends of the table, and it is the sharpest version of this letter’s standing view: the bid is not a continent, it is a position in a chain, wherever that chain happens to run.

Stay home vs go global — the Asia view. The regional re-rating resumed, in one country. Korea’s +8.2% arrived without Japan (+1.4%), without China (−3.5%), and only partly with Taiwan (+3.9%). Last week’s question was whether July ended the re-rating or merely rested it. This week voted rest — emphatically, and narrowly. It gets to keep voting.

Stay tech vs go broad. Tech participated without the defaults: the Nasdaq 100 added 1.11% against the S&P’s 0.40%, while inside the tech board the year’s biggest winners were its weakest lines. Broadening and leadership at once, with a hole where the largest names sit.

Momentum vs defensive — the global cut. The US has run on momentum over low volatility all year, at the 95th percentile of that spread. Outside America the same factor pair now exists on this board, and it says something more interesting. International momentum added 1.29% on the week and is +13.1% on the year; international min-vol lost 0.63% and is +8.6%. Momentum leads by 1.9 points on the week and 4.5 on the year — so the momentum regime is not an American artefact.

But read where each one sits rather than how each one moved. Momentum closed at 54.25 against a 22 June high of 54.35 — a fifth of one percent below it. That is a breakout being tested, not a breakout completed; it needs a close through next week to confirm.

And the defensive end is not rolling over while momentum tests. Global min-vol closed Friday at a new high, though the strictly ex-US cut of it remains 1.3% below its February peak — the difference is America, which is the same story VT told against VEU at the top of this letter. Both ends of the factor barbell rising at once is a bull broadening: a market where the aggressive end leads and the defensive end still makes highs is not a narrow bid wearing a broad costume. It is the real thing, with the caveat that the defensive half of it is being carried by the market this letter does not own.

One more pair the board carries, pointing the other way. EAFE growth added 0.44% against EAFE value’s −0.35% on the week — but on the year value leads growth outside America, +14.8% against +11.3%, which is the reverse of the US. Outside America 2026 has belonged to value and momentum simultaneously. Those two usually travel in opposite directions, and when they do not, it is worth noticing.

The Closelook letters — where this one sits. 2 · The State

The mechanism, named: a record taken in silence. Last Saturday this letter left a number on the board — VEU’s record close at 85.23 from 22 June, the record intraday print at 85.74, and Friday one cent short. On Thursday the index closed 85.71. The record is taken, four cents under the all-time print, in a week the S&P moved four tenths of a percent.

But it cleared by a hair and closed below itself. Thursday’s 85.71 beat the old record close by 48 cents — six tenths of one percent. Friday gave three back to 85.68. A breakout that clears by half a percent and finishes below its own weekly high is a level taken on paper and an open question in practice.

The memory bid is the engine, and it has a postcode. Korea +8.2%, Taiwan +3.9%, the Netherlands +3.5% — three of the top five regional lines are the same supply chain in three jurisdictions, while China and Brazil fall. Inside our own capex index the identical sort appears: Storage +21.1%, HBM Memory +15.3% at the top, EDA & Chip IP −1.3% at the bottom. Two boards, built from different instruments, describing one trade.

Oil, the other half of last week’s sentence. Seven days ago this letter recorded the barrel losing 8.7% on expectations that the Iran war was ending in fact rather than in communiqués. This week it took nearly all of it back, +7.31%, and closed the year at +83.1% — the strongest line on the cross-asset board in 2026. Hold both halves honestly: one diplomatic week did not unwind a structural bid, and one bounce does not restore it. The barrel has now round-tripped a full fortnight and settled almost exactly where it started, which is its own kind of answer.

And both quiet tells turned on Friday. IEF broke 93.17 on Monday, reclaimed it Thursday on the cool PPI print, then closed the week at 93.04 — below. The weekly close is the only close that settles it, so the break stands and the reclaim failed. Dollar-yen closed 159.35, refusing 159.5 a fourth straight week, through two cool inflation prints that should have made the level easy.

The macro print was the wrong shape. Retail sales −0.6% against +0.1% expected, ex-autos −0.3% against +0.2%; Michigan sentiment 51.0 against 54.5, with one-year inflation expectations up to 4.3%. Weak demand with firming expectations is the first stagflation-shaped print of this run, and it landed the same day the world index took its record.

Hold both halves. The index cleared its line. The bond market and the currency market spent the week declining to agree.

The structural read — Korea’s chart is further along than its week. The Korea fund is in the book, and the pattern it has drawn this year is the cleanest on the regional board. A clean breakout first. Then consolidation above the descending trend-channel line — the part that matters, because holding above a broken channel is what separates a genuine change of trend from a bounce inside a downtrend. Then, as the double bottom completed, the sharp move up and the break.

That sequence is textbook, and it is why this letter has treated Korea as structural rather than tactical since the July low.

But it is now sitting at major resistance around 180, and Friday closed 179.74 — under it by a quarter of a point after an 8.2% week. That level is the whole question. Break it and the year’s +84.9% is a trend continuing; fail it and everything since 30 July was a mean-reversion trade that ran further than most. The chart has earned the benefit of the doubt. It has not yet been given the confirmation.

3 · The Outlook

The three-index read — the middle stage led. We read the three together because they are three stages of one spend: capex (Rubin Build-Out, what gets built), opex (Agentic Ecosystem, what it costs to run), applications (Agentic Winners, what gets sold on top).

Opex +7.5% on the week, +69.4% on the year. Capex +4.9% and +107.4%. Applications +3.3% and −7.0%. Money still goes into the buildout — the year is unambiguous — but the fastest-moving claim this week was on running the thing rather than building it, which is the direction the whole thesis says the money eventually travels.

Read the three windows together, because they disagree, and the disagreement is the signal. On the year capex leads and it is not close: +107.4% against opex’s +69.4% and applications’ −7.0%. On the month the order inverts — opex +18.0%, applications +14.8%, capex +4.8% — which is the relative outperformance of the application layer that has been building since July. On the week opex led again. Steady growth in the operating layer across every window; a laggard year and a strong month in applications; a dominant year and a flat month in the buildout.

The correction lows say the same thing earlier. Capex and opex both bottomed on 29 July and are +23.6% and +23.1% off those lows. Applications never made that low: it bottomed on 25 June, five weeks earlier, and is +31.2% off it. An index that declines to confirm the others’ low, and then leads the recovery off it, is showing relative strength in the only way that is measurable rather than rhetorical.

And we have seen this exact behaviour before, from the other side. In the spring downturn the roles were reversed: capex and opex bottomed together on 5 February while applications kept falling until 10 April — nine weeks behind. The index that bottomed first that time was Rubin, and Rubin went on to lead the year by a distance, +107.4% and counting. This time it is the applications layer that refused the later low. The pattern does not guarantee the sequel — but the last index to do this went on to own the year, and that is worth stating before the fact rather than after. Probability, not prophecy.

And the structural line settles it. Opex and applications have both cleared their summer highs — the operating layer by 7.3% above its 1 June peak, the applications layer by 5.6% above its own. Capex has not: Rubin sits 13.7% below its 22 June high. Last Saturday this letter announced a tilt toward the opex and application layers and cited the build layer as seventeen percent below its own high. Four weeks of recovery later that gap is 13.7% — narrowing, but the two lighter layers have made new highs while the heaviest has not. The tilt announced before it was executed is being confirmed by the tape rather than by the argument.

Inside capex: the physical layer paid, the design layer charged. Storage +21.1% led the entire table and is +357% on the year; HBM Memory +15.3% (+168%). At the other end EDA & Chip IP −1.3%, the weakest of twenty-four. What Korea exports sits at the top; what sells into everyone equally sits at the bottom.

Inside opex: everything green, and the winner stood still. Edge & Distribution +12.8%, Data & Memory +12.3%, Substrate +11.4%, Compute Operators +11.1%. Then the tail: Foundation Models +1.9% against +858% on the year, Runtime & API Gateways +0.6% against +155%. The two names that made 2026 did nothing in the week their infrastructure was bought.

Inside applications: the inversion runs the other way. Application Leaders +4.9%, Enterprise (B2B) +3.6%, Control Plane +3.5%, Endpoints +3.4%, Consumer +2.7% — every one still negative on the year. The only sector up in 2026 is Megacap Gateway at +9.7%, and it was the only one red this week at −1.6%. The applications layer spent the week buying what it had spent the year selling.

The control group. HALO — our growth index carrying no AI thesis — gained 0.97%. Against opex at +7.5%, that settles what kind of week this was: an AI bid, not a growth bid. Inside it only Autonomous Defense & Drones (+5.9%) kept pace, while Energy Transition −2.0% and Destination Economy −2.5% were the clearest laggards anywhere in the house. The regime gauge. The Money Temperature instrument board sits at a composite of 51 — the middle of its range, and cooler than the equity tape’s mood would suggest after two cool inflation prints and a record in the world index. Read it plainly: this is not a chase, and it is not early either. It is the reading where rotations get funded — and where first mistakes get funded too.

Last Saturday this letter ended on a deliberate fork: if the supply chain was still offered with no deadline in sight, the crash story was distribution in disguise — if it firmed, July’s damage would be filed as positioning, absorbed. The week answered, and then it kept answering.

Roughly three-quarters of the world’s stock indices closed the week green. The total-world index finished at an all-time high. Every layer of the AI trade — the builders, the operators, the applications — rose seven percent or more in the same five sessions, something that has not happened since this letter began scoring them separately.

And the leadership of the whole board was not a stock market at all: copper miners gained eleven percent, silver ten, gold seven. Only two things on the cross-asset board fell — the dollar, slightly, and oil, by almost nine percent.

A week in which bonds are steady, metals are flying, oil is collapsing, and the world’s equity index prints a record is not a story about earnings, although the earnings were extraordinary. It is a story about the price of money: on Friday the US reported the first negative payroll print of the cycle, and the market concluded — provisionally, loudly — that the rate rise it has feared all summer is not coming. This letter is about what the world’s money did with that conclusion.

1 · This Week’s Action

The cross-asset backdrop. Read the board top-down this week, because the top is the message: copper miners +11.6%, silver +9.8%, gold +7.3% — the metals complex led every equity index on the board, and it did so in a week when the dollar fell only a third of a percent and long bonds barely moved (TLT +0.6%, IEF +0.2%). That combination — metals up hard, bonds steady, dollar flat — is not an inflation scare and it is not a flight to safety. It is the market pricing an easier path for money, with leverage.

Below the metals, the equity stack in order: the Nasdaq’s top tier +5.5%, the Nasdaq 100 +5.1%, the S&P +3.5%, bitcoin +3.3%. And at the bottom, alone with the dollar: oil, −8.7% on the week — the year’s +87% organizing fact meeting the possibility that its war premium is finally expiring. One board, one sentence: everything was bought except the barrel.

The global sectors. Nine of twelve rows green, and the two ends of the board tell one story between them. On top, global materials +6.9% — the metals bid wearing a sector costume, with the gold miners’ +21% week buried inside it — followed by global tech +6.2%, the AI complex’s broad reflation.

At the bottom, a coherent red block: energy −3.8% following the barrel down, utilities −0.8% and REITs −0.5% — the yield-proxy defensives serving as the funding source in a week when everything offensive was bid. Between them, a long green middle: industrials +3.5%, consumer discretionary +2.9%, telecom +2.6%, healthcare +2.0%. When the only losers on a twelve-row board are the barrel’s sector and the two bond-proxies, the board is telling you which way the discount-rate wind blew.

The regions. Twenty-six of twenty-nine regional funds closed the week green — the broadest weekly participation this board has printed since the spring. The leaders are the AI supply chain, re-bought: Taiwan +6.8%, Korea +5.7%, world small-caps +5.4%, Japan +4.9%, Indonesia +4.4% — and growth beat value across the developed world (EAFE growth +3.9% against EAFE value +1.7%). The red column is short and specific: Brazil −3.6%, Argentina −2.3%, Hong Kong −1.6%.

One caveat this letter will now carry permanently under this board: these are US-listed funds priced in dollars at the New York close, and for Asian markets that clock can differ sharply from the local one in a violent week — see the Korea paragraph below, where the local index and the dollar wrapper disagree by ten percentage points about the same five days.

Korea and China, the two markets arguing with themselves. Read in local terms, the week’s worst headline index on earth was the KOSPI, −5.1% — digestion after the limit-up reopening, concentrated in the very large-cap memory names that led the year. But underneath it, Korea’s broader board went the other way: the KOSDAQ gained 11.0% — small and mid caps sprinting while the flagship index fell.

China printed the same split along a different axis: onshore A-share tech +5.5% (with the broad A-share market +3.8%) against Hong Kong-listed China in the red — the Hang Seng −0.8%, the large-cap H-shares and the internet platforms flat to down.

Two countries, one pattern, and it is the week’s global signature: the domestic, broader, less-crowded board was bought; the internationally owned flagship names were sold. Keep that signature — it reappears at every scale on this letter’s map, and the US letter will show you the same anatomy inside the semiconductor complex tomorrow.

The Global Compass

The same four relative-strength questions, answered the same way, every Saturday.

Regions: the year’s leaders rejoined the month’s. For three weeks this board showed an inversion — the year belonging to the supply chain (Korea, Taiwan), the month to everyone else. This week the inversion began to close from both ends: Taiwan and Korea’s dollar wrappers led the week again while the periphery — Poland, Indonesia, the small-cap world — kept its month-scale gains. A market where last month’s laggards and this year’s leaders rise together is what “broad” actually looks like on a ranking board.

Sectors: energy lost the year’s crown in one week. Energy entered the week owning both clocks — first on the year, first on the month. Five sessions later it owns neither: global tech has retaken the year’s lead (+34% YTD against energy’s +28%), and materials seized the month outright (+8.8%) with the metals bid inside it. A ten-point relative swing between the year’s two leading sectors in one week is the rotation ledger this board kept all July — out of tech, into energy — running in reverse, at speed. Tech is no longer even red on the month.

Stay home vs go global — the US view. After four consecutive weekly ticks against America, the ratio ticked back: the S&P’s +3.5% edged the ex-US benchmark’s +2.9%. One week does not end a streak’s meaning — the ex-US case this year was never “America falls behind every week,” it was “the gap stops widening.” Both sides of that statement held: the US led the week, and the world index still closed at a record with the ratio far below its old shelf.

Stay home vs go global — the Europe view. Unchanged verdict: the three-year downtrend in Europe-relative-to-world is intact, and a solid European week (France +2.9%, Germany +2.7%, the euro-zone large caps +3.0%) still lagged the world index by half a point. Europe participates; it does not lead. This letter keeps owning it through the world index rather than instead of it.

Stay home vs go global — the Asia view. The red line — Asia ex-Japan relative to world — put in its first up-week since the July give-back began: the supply-chain re-rating leg is attempting to resume after its round trip from 100 to 114 to 103. Japan’s dark line did what it has done for three years: nothing at the ratio level, +4.9% in absolute terms. The Asia view’s whole purpose this month is one question: was July the end of the regional re-rating, or its first rest? This week voted rest. It gets to keep voting.

Stay tech vs go broad. Two weeks ago this ratio broke below its 50-day average, and we called it the equal-weight bulls’ broadening signal. This week global tech gained 6.2% against the world’s 3.5%, and the ratio snapped back toward the average — and here is the part that matters: the broadening survived anyway. Small caps, the periphery, the KOSDAQ, the equal-weight cuts all outran their flagship indices in the same week tech led the sectors. Tech leading is not the opposite of broadening when the average stock keeps pace. That combination — leadership and participation — is the rarest state on this board, and it is the state the week closed in.

2 · The State

The mechanism, named: the market fired the rate rise. Friday morning the US reported payrolls of minus 23,000 against a consensus near plus 80,000 — the first negative print of this cycle, below even the most pessimistic house estimate on the street. The composition made it worse than the headline: government payrolls fell 53,000 while private hiring, at plus 30,000, ran at less than half its expected pace; the unemployment rate held at 4.1% only because participation slipped; wage growth, at +0.1% on the month and +3.2% on the year, threatened nothing.

Within the hour, the intermediate Treasury fund reclaimed the two-year trendline it had been breaking all week — the line this publication’s daily editions have tracked for five sessions as “the bond veto” on the equity charts. The close settled it: the veto died. (The level-by-level scoring of that death belongs to tomorrow’s US letter; the map consequence belongs here.)

A labor market this soft, with wages this quiet, takes the central-bank rate rise that hung over the summer off the table for the year — if the inflation prints cooperate. That conditional is the whole architecture of next week: the market has already voted; the CPI gets to veto the veto’s death.

The metals complex is the receipt. How do you know the market truly traded the no-hike conclusion, rather than just enjoying a soft-landing Friday? You look at what led. Copper miners +11.6%, silver +9.8%, gold +7.3%, the gold miners +21.3% — the leveraged, rate-sensitive, hard-asset end of the board outran every stock index on earth, while the dollar barely moved and bonds barely moved.

Gold in particular kept doing what we documented on Wednesday: trading as a risk asset, correlated with the Nasdaq, bought with leverage — its 90-day correlation with the tech index sits above +0.5 when a true haven would sit near zero or below (the full mechanics are this week’s Knowledge Corner). And copper — the metal the AI buildout physically consumes, the one sitting under this letter’s constraint-sector thesis — led the entire complex.

The money is not hiding from something. It is front-running the price of money going down, and buying the things a cheaper-money, still-building world consumes.

Oil, the other half of the same sentence. The barrel lost 8.7% in five sessions — the sharpest weekly fall since the year’s rally began, on rising expectation that the Iran war may finally be ending in fact rather than in communiqués. Hold both halves of the energy picture honestly: oil remains up massively on the year, and one diplomatic week does not unwind a structural bid.

But the direction matters for everything else on the map — because the summer’s inflation anxiety was substantially an oil-price anxiety, and a falling barrel is disinflation the CPI has not printed yet. The market spent Friday connecting exactly those dots: soft labor, falling oil, quiet wages — and priced the hike away. Energy equities (−3.8% globally) paid for the privilege.

The earnings floor under all of it. None of this happened in a vacuum — it happened in the final week of the strongest US reporting season in years. With the June-quarter season now past its peak, blended S&P 500 earnings growth stands near 47% year over year against expectations of roughly 29% when the season began — driven by enormous upside surprises from the megacaps, with analysts raising forecasts into the season rather than trimming them, which is itself unusual.

And the house caveat travels with the number, every time it appears: strip the largest outliers — Alphabet and Amazon, whose results carry exceptional non-operating investment gains — and the growth rate compresses back toward the high twenties. Both numbers are true. The 47% tells you why the tape could absorb a negative payroll print and rally; the ex-megacap 29% tells you the aggregate is concentrated and the average company’s quarter, while strong, is not a moonshot.

The June-quarter comps are now mostly done; the second leg — the July-quarter enders, the enterprise-software cohort among them — begins next week, and it lands in tomorrow’s letters’ territory.

The structural read — the count, upgraded. Last Saturday this letter drew a decision line under the ex-US index: the rising channel line from the April 2025 low — hold it and wave 3 continues, break it and an extended rest begins. The week resolved the branch upward, emphatically. VEU closed Friday at 85.22 — one cent under its all-time closing high (85.23, set June 22), with only the June intraday mark at 85.74 above it.

The working count from the October 2022 low now reads: waves 1 and 2 complete by late 2023, and the long third wave subdividing — its first leg carrying to the June top, its second the spring 2025 pullback, and the index now inside the third wave of that third wave, the segment of a trend that historically does the most work in the least time. The chart below carries the full map, with the fourth and fifth waves ghosted above.

And the confirmation did not wait for VEU: the total-world index closed the week at an all-time high, 161.30 — the aggregate this letter’s core thesis owns broke out first, with the ex-US half one cent from joining it. The breakout question is next week’s business; the count says the trend that would power it is already in its strongest segment.

3 · The Outlook

The four-index read — all layers paid, for the first time. Since this letter began scoring the AI trade’s layers separately, the story has been rotation: money leaving one layer to fund the next, the ladder inverting week by week — last week the applications gained eight percent while the builders fell three and a half. This week broke the pattern in the only direction nobody positioned for: everything was bid. Rubin, the build-out layer, +7.1%. The Agentic Ecosystem — the operating layer — +8.9%. The Agentic Winners — the applications — +8.0%. HALO, the broad growth basket, +5.3%. Euro-AI +4.7%. Five baskets, five different theses, one week, all up between five and nine percent.

The house referee ratios barely moved in consequence — the use-against-build line sits at 1.41, a week-over-week tick of less than one percent — because a handoff gauge goes quiet precisely when nothing is being handed off: both sides rising together is not rotation, it is expansion.

Whether that expansion is the start of the broad leg — the one the wave counts on both sides of the Atlantic now sketch — or a one-week truce in the rotation war is the question the letters will score next Saturday. The regime gauge. The Money Temperature instrument board warmed from neutral to roughly the low sixties this week — the first warm reading after three neutral weeks — with the US legs individually hot (the S&P instrument at 87, the Nasdaq at 79) while gold (58), the ex-US world (69) and bitcoin (51) sit warm-to-neutral. Read it plainly: the tape is no longer cool enough to call any of this early, and not yet uniformly hot enough to call it a chase. Rotations get funded here; so do first mistakes.

For two letters running, the stress in this book came from Asia: first the Tokyo leverage unwind, then a Chinese model that claims to design chips. This week the direction of travel reversed. The market-implied odds of a September Fed hike went from roughly one-in-five to above eighty percent in a single week, spot crude traded through $100, and the US semiconductor complex closed below the support band it had held since spring — on the same day Intel delivered its fastest revenue growth since 2011 and was sold 8% for it.

And the ex-US map? Taiwan finished the week green, Korea’s decline shrank from double digits to one and a half points, the SK Hynix debut ended the week where it started, and the all-world ex-US benchmark outperformed both the S&P and the Nasdaq. This letter is about what it means when the test moves from the supplier’s side of the AI trade to the buyer’s side.

1 · This Week’s Action

The cross-asset backdrop. Oil again — USO +10.4% on the week, the second consecutive double-digit week, now +97.6% year-to-date. Copper miners joined (COPX +5.6%), silver held its bid (SLV +2.7%), and that real-asset shelf sat on top of a board whose bottom half tells the real story: the mega-cap concentrates led the equity decline again (QQQ −2.6%, QTOP −3.0%, TOPT −1.9%, against SPY −1.1%) — and this time the bond shelf fell with them (IEF −0.8%, TLT −1.3%).

That is the week’s signature. In the Tokyo-unwind week, Treasuries caught the safety bid; this week they were part of the problem. When stocks and bonds fall together, the market is not repricing growth — it is repricing the discount rate. Gold (+1.1%) and the dollar (+0.7%) both firmed, which is what that regime usually looks like.

The global sectors. Energy led for the third consecutive week (IXC +4.2%, now +32% YTD) — the oil chart is no longer a footnote to this board, it is the board’s organizing fact. Behind it, the same defensive-and-real shelf as last week: materials +1.5%, utilities +1.3%, REITs +1.3%, industrials +1.1%, healthcare and financials modestly green.

The bottom is new, though: not tech, but communication services (−4.2%) and consumer discretionary (−3.6%) — the sectors where Alphabet’s post-print drift and Tesla’s unrescued miss live. Global tech itself closed only −0.8%, a number that hides everything: inside it, semiconductors were cracked on Friday, software gave back an early-week rally, and the orchestration layer had its best day of the season. The aggregate is calm; the interior is violent.

The regions. No washout, no single story — which is itself the story after two weeks of forced selling. Norway led on the oil bid (+3.6%), Hong Kong +1.7%, Taiwan +1.4% — its first green week in three — Spain +1.2%, Argentina +1.1%.

The red column is shallow: Indonesia −2.8%, Malaysia −2.0%, India −1.9%, Korea −1.4% — and Korea’s number deserves a second look, because it was flat through Thursday and took nearly all of its decline in Friday’s US-driven session. The one to frame: VEU closed the week at −0.35%, against −1.1% for the S&P and −2.6% for the Nasdaq. In a stress week manufactured in the US, the ex-US book outperformed the US core across the board.

The Global Compass

New this week, and recurring from here: the Compass — the same four relative-strength questions, answered the same way, every Saturday.

Who leads and lags, at two horizons; and the ratios that decide the biggest allocation questions in this letter: stay home or go global, stay tech or go broad. The Asia-based home-vs-global view — the most heterogeneous one — joins next week.

Regions: the year’s leaders are the month’s laggards. The YTD column still belongs to the AI supply chain — Korea +68%, Taiwan +54% — with Thailand, Norway and Austria behind.

Flip to the one-month column and the same two names sit at the bottom (Korea −21%, Taiwan −7%) while the month’s leaders are the year’s forgotten: China’s large-caps +9%, Norway +8%, Hong Kong +7%, Poland +6%. That inversion is the July story in one picture: the crowded winners digesting, the money staying in the region but rotating down the leaderboard.

Sectors: one sector leads both clocks. Energy is the only sector on the board leading the year (+32%) and the month (+11%) — the oil chart translated into equity leadership. Tech is the mirror: first on the year (+27%), last on the month (−5%).

The month’s quiet strength — financials +6%, REITs +4%, healthcare +3% — is the defensive-and-yield shelf this letter has flagged for three weeks, now visible at the horizon where trends get set.

Stay home vs go global — the US view. The ratio tells a story the S&P’s own chart hides: US leadership over the world peaked in early 2025 and has printed lower highs since. The spring-2026 recovery leg stalled this month below the old shelf, and this week the ratio ticked down again — the rest of the world outperformed America in a stress week America itself produced. One line, one question, updated weekly: is the decade-long stay-home trade resuming, or was the spring bounce the counter-trend?

Stay home vs go global — the Europe view. For a Europe-based reader the same question has a harsher answer: the home-vs-world ratio has been in a downtrend for the full three years of the chart, and every counter-rally — including this spring’s — has been sold. A Europe-only book has structurally lost to a global one, SAP’s week notwithstanding. That is precisely why this letter’s map is built on where the flows land, not where the reader lives.

Stay tech vs go broad. The concentration trade in one line: a three-year structural uptrend that went vertical in May–June — the AI re-rating at global scale — peaked in late June, and has been rolling over since, now back at its 50-day average. Not broken, but no longer leading: the month in which SMH lost 12% while the world index barely moved is exactly this rollover, seen from above. A decisive break of the average would be the broadening signal the equal-weight bulls have waited two years for; a bounce from it would say the concentration regime survived another test.

2 · The State

The engine: a rate repricing, not a growth scare. The week’s driver was Thursday’s flush — tariff-driven inflation prints and Fed commentary pushed the market-implied odds of a September hike from roughly 20% to above 80%, real yields pressed toward 3%, and the Mag7 complex took broad losses.

This is a different animal from the two previous corrections in this letter. Tokyo was positioning; K3 was narrative; this is the discount rate — the one variable that touches every asset on every board above at the same time. Hence bonds red, gold up, dollar up, defensives green: the classic fingerprint.

The print week, read from the flow map. The season’s first full week gets its print-by-print scoring in Sunday’s US letter; what belongs here is the geography of it. The American tape sold its own silicon champions on good news — Intel’s strongest revenue growth since 2011 was met with an 8% decline — while the week’s single best print-reaction on the entire developed-market tape belonged to a European name: SAP, up 9.3% on Friday alone, off a 52-week low, on its claim to the orchestration layer of the agentic enterprise (the full thesis: The Agent Is Not the Product. The Orchestrator Is.). For a letter about where value in the AI economy accrues geographically, that pairing matters: the market spent the week repricing which layer of the stack earns the profit pool — and the layers are not all American, and not all in the index everyone watches.

The silicon crack — located, not mapped. The US semiconductor complex closed the week below the support band it had defended since spring — the first structural crack there since this book’s full add; the level-by-level map and what our book’s contract says about it are the US letter’s territory. What this letter takes from it is the location: the crack happened in the buying market, not the producing one. Taiwan and Korea’s ETFs — the supply chain itself — finished green and nearly flat respectively while the US complex broke. And note what the crack is not: it is not the K3 design-shock scenario — the EDA names were quiet. This was a discount-rate shock finding the most extended complex on the most rate-sensitive tape.

The Asian legs held — scored honestly. Last week’s letter ended with one test: Seoul’s Monday reopen, with the US market front-running a gap-up. The gap-up printed — Korea recovered through midweek, and the SK Hynix ADR rallied from its tested $149 line back toward $170 before Friday’s US flush took it down 8.8% to close at $154.57 — almost exactly flat on the week ($154.03 last Friday). A debut that absorbs a Kioxia collapse one week and a US rate shock the next, and holds its offer line on every close, is building a record. Taiwan’s green week and TSMC’s steadiness (below its 50-day, well above its July low) complete the picture: this week’s stress did not come from the supply chain — it came from the customer’s cost of capital. The two-country thesis was a bystander, not a casualty.

Four structures, one grid. Before the count, the states — because they differ, and the difference is the point. The build-out index is ranging: two months inside a well-defined box, currently at the box floor. The US semiconductor complex is testing: still inside its rising channel from the autumn, but in the channel’s lower half after losing the midline. VEU is resting: flat on its horizontal shelf, capped by nothing more serious than a three-week trendline. Taiwan is correcting: under its June down-line, above its breakout. None of the four is broken; all four are asking their own question. That is a rotation’s chart-book, not a top’s.

The structural read — the count, updated on the chart. The weekly count from the October 2022 low now reads: wave 1 into the early-2023 peak, wave 2 into the late-2023 low, and the long wave 3 as the advance since — with its terminal zone drawn just overhead in the 88–90 area (the high so far: 85.74). After it, the map shows a wave-4 rest — the kind measured in months, with the mid-70s as its natural landing zone — and a fifth wave projecting toward the high 90s. The live question is only where in that sequence this pullback sits: either wave 3 is finishing (one more push toward 88–90 before the rest), or the rest began at 85.74 slightly early. Both branches carry the same portfolio conclusion, which is why we can hold them at once: the multi-year advance is not complete at trend degree, but a months-long consolidation is on the map — before or after one more high. This week’s contribution was behavioral, not structural: through a US-made stress week, the ex-US structure was the calmer one.

3 · The Outlook

The four indices. Last week the ladder sorted by physical exposure — Rubin took −9.3% while the agentic operators finished green. This week the ladder inverted: Rubin +0.4% (+92% YTD) as the build-out complex stabilized after its washout, while AW40, the agentic operators, gave back −3.7% (−23% YTD), the Agentic Ecosystem −2.9% (+38% YTD) and HALO −1.9% (−1% YTD).

Then Friday inverted it again: AW40 rose +2.2% on the orchestrator day while Rubin fell −3.8% with the SOXX break. Read the two moves together and the picture is not “hardware versus software” — it is a market that no longer treats the AI trade as one trade. The rate shock hit the leveraged and the extended; the orchestration repricing paid the control plane; and the Agentic Winners index — whose Control-Plane cohort is the diary’s expression of the orchestration thesis — is where we keep score.

The regime gauge. Money Temperature composite at 50 — up six points from last week’s 44, back to dead-neutral mid-band. The gauge is saying what the regional board says: the forced-selling phase cooled, and no euphoria replaced it. Rotations get funded at 50; chases do not.

4 · What May Lie Ahead

Levels. VEU: the 50-day at 82.98 remains the overhead test, the 80.73–78.77 confluence band (congestion shelf + the trendline through the April 2025/2026 lows) remains the downside tripwire — both untouched this week, both unchanged in meaning. SOXX: the 530–532 band is now overhead; the next support is the primary channel floor around 520, the mid-July washout low — and the down-channel from the June highs still reads corrective (flag-shaped) unless 520 goes. QQQ broke 694 on its third test (closed 684); that level flips to resistance. SPY sits just below its 50-day (~745) with a green Friday and 10 of 11 sectors up — the index-level tape is not broken, the tech-weighted tape is. SK Hynix: $149 remains the line that defines the debut. Korea’s 50-day sits far overhead at ~189 — July’s scar needs months, not weeks.

The calendar turns against the book — now. One more input for the two-month map, and it points the same way as the wave count: seasonality. On VEU’s 17-year calendar, August and September are the only two consecutive months with a negative average — August −1.1% (positive only half the time; the worst prints: −8.5% in 2011, −7.8% in 2015), September −0.4%. The rest of the year is green on average; the recovery columns are October through December. Read it against the structural read above: the fourth-wave rest the chart maps and the calendar’s only soft patch occupy the same two months. Neither is a forecast alone; both pointing at August–September at once is how this letter defines an unfavorable window — for adding, not for holding. And a footnote from the month just closed: July was the seasonally mediocre month for the ex-US book (−2.5% this year) and the seasonally best month for the Nasdaq — which printed its worst July on record instead; that anomaly is the US letter’s story, but its geography belongs here: the seasonal script failed in America, not abroad.

Monday is a verification date — for the other shock. Kimi K3’s open weights and technical report are promised for July 27. That is Monday. The design-shock narrative either becomes reproducible fact or stays a demonstration, and the K3 trilogy (Part I · Part II · Part III) is the framework we will score it against. For this book the question stays the same: does abundant design arrive at Asia’s physical layer as more tape-outs and more wafer starts.

Print season, week two — a demand-side referendum on the Asian slice. The names reporting Wednesday and Thursday — Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, Apple — are, for this book, not stocks: they are the four budgets from which the hyperscaler dollar flows to Asia’s fabs, memory lines and packaging floors. Their capex guides are the demand side of the entire flow map this letter is built on. TSMC has already answered once this season (capex raised to $60–64 billion); this week the customers themselves confirm or cut. Every Asia-linked position in the book is, indirectly, long those four guidance sentences. Cadence prints Monday, one session after the K3 weights drop — the US letter carries that print; this book only needs its echo at the physical layer.

Oil: watch the back of the curve, not the front. Spot traded through $100 this week; the December contract sits near $80. That 20-dollar gap is the market saying temporary — a supply-and-risk premium, not a new price regime. The crisis signal would be the back of the curve rising to meet spot. Until then, the oil chart is an inflation-odds input (see the hike repricing above) rather than a growth-shock input. December near $80 is the line this book watches.

Last week, we showed you that the ex-US rally is six regions wearing a twenty-six-region costume — a concentrated AI-chip bet led by Taiwan and Korea. This week, we follow the money to show why it looks that way: we trace what happens to every $100 the hyperscalers spend, how much of it lands in Asia, and which two buckets within the AI rack account for three-quarters of the bill. The market spent the week drawing the same map — and concluded by taking Korea’s champion to New York.

1 · This Week’s Action

The cross-asset backdrop. The board reads risk-on with a commodity accent. Oil led the week (USO +4.0%, now +57% year-to-date) — the “oil isn’t buying the war” read of recent weeks got at least a partial rebuttal. Bitcoin continued its repair (IBIT +4.2%), and the mega-cap concentrates outran the broad market (TOPT +2.1%, QTOP +1.7%, against SPY +0.8%). On the other side, gold eased 0.8% but held comfortably above the 4,000 belief line, and the long end sold off again (TLT −1.1%) after the hawkish minutes. The rates question is not resolved — it is just not this week’s headline.

The global sectors. Energy led (+3.8%) as oil caught its bid, followed by telecom (+2.3%), tech (+1.3%), and financials (+1.1%) — while every classic defensive closed red: healthcare −2.0%, staples −1.2%, utilities −0.8%. That is a risk-on rotation inside a barely-moving global tape (VT +0.2% on the week).

The regions. The board answers last week’s question — and inverts it. We asked whether participation would broaden beyond the two chip countries. It did, but not the way a trend-follower would have guessed: the periphery led — Brazil +4.0%, Southeast Asia +3.7%, China +3.4%, New Zealand +3.0%, Argentina +2.6% — while Korea rested (EWY −3.4% after its +89% year-to-date run) and Taiwan sat flat. The year-to-date count moved from six regions beating VEU to seven; Poland joined the club. Breadth is broadening at the margin — one week, one region at a time.

2 · The State

The event of the week — the listing. The demand question got answered three times in one week. SK Hynix — the HBM leader and the cheapest large AI name in the world — sold $26.5 billion of ADRs in the largest US listing by a foreign company on record. The book was covered multiple times over. The deal priced at $149, a 2.9% premium to Seoul’s close, where offerings of this size normally price at a discount. And when the ADRs opened on Nasdaq on Friday, the first trades printed near $170 — with an intraday high of $177 — before closing at $168.31, thirteen percent above the offer. The ticker converts from SKHYV to SKHY on Monday.

The tension worth naming. The same week the primary market paid up, the secondary market sold: Micron gave back part of its trillion-dollar week, and the memory complex traded red into the debut. That is not a contradiction — it reads like capital rotating from the expensive expression of the thesis (Micron at ~6.6x forward) into the cheaper new one (SK Hynix at ~4.8x at the offer, ~5.5x after the pop). The Korea discount is not closing by argument; it is closing by arbitrage.

Follow the dollar. The listing is the visible end of a pipeline worth tracing in full. The four large US hyperscalers are heading toward roughly $650–700 billion of combined 2026 capex — Alphabet guides to $180–190 billion, Meta to $125–145 billion, and Microsoft says it is expanding AI capacity by more than 80% while roughly doubling its data-center footprint over two years. Our working estimate for where that money lands: of every $100, $45–55 stays in the US or wherever the data center is built, $10–20 goes to Europe, Mexico and other regions — and $30–40 ultimately accrues to Asian production and suppliers. For the incremental AI-compute dollar the Asian share is higher, around $40–50 of every $100, because the marginal AI dollar contains more GPUs, HBM, advanced packaging, server assembly and cooling — and less land and conventional construction. At a $675 billion midpoint, that implies an Asian revenue pool of roughly $200–270 billion a year, with a central estimate of around $235 billion. This is an economic-value estimate, not a reported accounting number — hyperscalers do not disclose the geography of their capex, and an invoice paid to Nvidia in California ultimately funds wafers in Taiwan and HBM stacks in Korea.

Taiwan is the largest single destination — 13–18% of total capex, $88–122 billion across foundry, advanced packaging, server ODMs, substrates, cooling, and power. Korea’s share is narrower but more concentrated — 7–11%, $47–74 billion — because it flows almost entirely into the single most profitable bucket: memory. Korean producers accounted for nearly 80% of global HBM revenue in the first quarter (SK Hynix 58%, Samsung 21%, per Counterpoint). Japan sits one or two layers upstream — equipment, wafers, photoresists, substrates — collecting its share when TSMC, SK Hynix, and Samsung spend to expand. China’s manufacturing footprint is larger than its profit capture. Malaysia and the rest of Southeast Asia are the China-plus-one winners.

Inside the AI rack. Cut the same $100 differently — not hyperscaler capex, but the AI system itself — and the concentration sharpens further. Our 2026 central case: memory takes $38 of every AI-hardware $100 (HBM alone is $18–25 of complete rack cost), accelerator and host-CPU compute takes $40 (with the design and IP margin staying largely in the US, and TSMC capturing the fabrication and packaging slice), and everything else — networking, power, cooling, boards, assembly — competes for the remaining $22.

Memory and compute now divide roughly three-quarters of the AI-system dollar between them. That is why the economic leverage sits with HBM suppliers, accelerator designers, and advanced-packaging capacity rather than with conventional server assemblers — and why the memory story keeps forcing itself into this letter. Within the Asian pool itself, the two largest slices are advanced logic fabrication with packaging, and memory:

The concentration check, week two. The Vanguard four-slice comparison keeps score on the same story from the top down: VEU (large-cap-tilted, chip-heavy at the top) finished Friday at +14.2% year-to-date against VSS (small-caps, no mega-cap chip names) at +8.5% — the gap widened to 5.7 percentage points from 5 a week ago. The rally is still being carried by exactly the names the flow framework says are collecting the capex dollar.

The two legs against each other. Taiwan compounded steadily all year; Korea went vertical from May. This week the two swapped character — Taiwan flat, Korea digesting. That is what a hand-off inside a theme looks like, not a top.

The structural read. The three-year log view keeps the story honest: a staircase from the 2023 low — +69% over the window — with every correction holding above the prior shelf, including April’s fast flush. VEU trades above both its 50-day (82.6) and 200-day (76.5) averages with RSI at 52: stretched in price, mid-range in momentum. Our chart terminal’s machine wave read (beta) counts the advance as an impulse now in a fifth-wave extension, with invalidation far below at 52.54 — nothing in the structure argues against the trend. The risk at this altitude is breadth and rate path, not pattern.

3 · The Outlook

The four indices. The week told the whipsaw story honestly. Rubin fell 5.6% on Tuesday, recovered 3.9% on Thursday — the first all-green day since Monday — and finished the week at −0.1%: a round trip. The agentic side led into Thursday and then gave back 3.3% on Friday, into the debut, ending the week at +1.4% (AEI). AW40 added +1.7%, HALO lost −2.6%. Year-to-date the ladder reads: Rubin +119%, AEI +47%, HALO +5%, AW40 −21% (equal-weight variants). The barbell swapped sides twice and ended the week close to balance — this is a tug-of-war, not a regime change. Friday’s give-back on the agentic side is the same rotation §2 describes: capital moving toward the cheaper expressions of the same theme.

For weeks, we have described the US tape as narrow — a handful of names carrying a wide index. This week, we widen the lens to the whole world and find the same fingerprint.

The international rally that shows up green on every screen is not broad. It has been a concentrated bet on the AI hardware supply chain, wearing a benchmark’s clothing — and the moment you count the participants rather than read the headline, the concentration is impossible to miss.

The read below holds that this is rotation, not risk-off, and that the concentration is the single most important thing to understand about global equities right now.

1 · This Week’s Action

The cross-asset backdrop. The bellwethers set the tone before equities open. This week, bonds softened as yields firmed (the long end down more than the belly), the dollar drifted lower, gold held, and the risk-seeking corners — bitcoin, silver, copper — pushed higher. A backdrop that leans risk-friendly, with no haven bid anywhere in it.

The tell is what is absent: no scramble for protection, no credit stress, no bid for bonds. The risk assets led, and the safe assets lagged — the signature of repositioning, not de-risking.

The global sectors. Read top to bottom, the global sector board carries the same split we flagged in the US, one level up. Financials led the world on the week; industrials, telecom, and materials followed; global technology finished near the bottom of the green — up, less than one percent, while financials ran four-and-a-half. The defensives and the rate-proxies — staples, utilities, energy, REITs — sat in the red.

The anomaly is the same as in the US: global tech’s flat week hides the strongest trend on the board. Its Weighted Alpha is the highest of any sector and its three-month gain the largest — this is a leader resting, not a leader breaking. The rotation ran from the crowded winner into the laggards, not out of risk.

The regions and factors. Here is the week’s real story, and it is a story about concentration. The board is a sea of green — but read it the way it deserves to be read, and the green is misleading.

Count the participants. Of the twenty-six single-country and regional ETFs on the board, twenty-one finished the year to date positive and five negative — but only six have beaten the ex-US benchmark (VEU, +14.6% YTD): Korea (+95%), Taiwan (+69%), Thailand, Austria, the Netherlands and Japan.

Twenty of twenty-six lag the very index they compose. And the two that carry it — Korea and Taiwan — are the semiconductor economies (Samsung and SK Hynix; TSMC), with the Netherlands (ASML) close behind. The ex-US benchmark’s return, stripped of narrative, is the AI hardware supply chain. Everywhere else — China (−15% YTD), India (−8%), Indonesia (−37%) — is flat to falling. This is not a broad international bull. It is the US concentration story, translated into regions.

2 · The State

The global market map. The single structural read of global equities right now is concentration. The broad, democratic slices of the market are lagging the cap-weighted ones — and that gap is the whole story.

The clearest proof sits in one chart. Rebase the four Vanguard slices to a common start and the concentration is visible: the ex-US benchmark (VEU) leads at +15% year to date, but the broad ex-US small-cap fund (VSS) trails at +10% — a five-point gap, with emerging markets (VWO) and even the total-world fund (which contains the US) in between. When the democratic basket of everything trails the cap-weighted index by five points, a handful of large names are doing the work and the average stock is being left behind.

That is the Bessembinder skew — a few winners create the wealth, the median destroys relative value — showing up not in a spreadsheet of individual stocks but on the face of the market itself.

The thesis. The tape is risk-on and rotating, but the leadership is both narrow and unresolved. Two facts sit in tension and we hold both:

• Concentration is the structure. The gains are carried by the AI-chip complex — the same barbell we live on in the US, now visible in which countries win. Own the two right regions and you beat the world; own the average region and you lag it.

• Ex-US leadership is a trend the US briefly out-ran. Measured over the year, the ex-US funds carry the stronger momentum — Weighted Alpha ranks developed-ex-US and all-world-ex-US above the total-world fund, and VEU (+14.6% YTD) has beaten the S&P (+10.2%). But this week the US quietly held serve: the total-world fund (which contains the US) edged the ex-US fund, and the S&P out-ran VEU on the five-day. The international-leadership trade is real on the trend and paused on the week.

• Factors say offense. Inside the ex-US universe, value and growth both out-ran min-vol this week, with the low-volatility factor dead last — the posture of a market repricing, not retreating. But the same skew applies: the median factor tilt still lags the concentrated winner.

The VT/SPY read — international vs US. The co-leadership question resolves cleanly by horizon: year to date, ex-US leads (VEU > S&P); this week, the US led (S&P and total-world > ex-US). A weakening dollar quietly helps the non-US books underneath — a tailwind for the international trend if it holds, a headwind removed if the dollar turns.

The structural read — the ex-US benchmark’s channel. The multi-year picture on the ex-US benchmark (VEU) is a clean ascending channel off the 2025 base, and price now rides the upper rail — the uptrend intact and, if anything, stretched. The read stays constructive while VEU holds the channel; the rising midline and the lower rail are where a pullback gets bought, and a decisive close below the channel is what would flip the trend.

The internals behind the map. The same picture, read through our own indices below: which side of the AI trade — build-out or deployment — is leading, and whether the concentration is broadening or narrowing.

3 · The Outlook

The forward read we hold lightly and reset each week — price tells us before the narrative does. This week the question is whether the concentration broadens or breaks: does the rest of the world’s tape join Taiwan and Korea, or do the two leaders roll over and take the benchmark with them.

The four indices — the clearest read we have. We track this cycle through four functional indices, and they cut the AI trade into its parts.

The build-out side (Rubin) is the semiconductor and infrastructure core — the same complex that is the Taiwan-and-Korea concentration on the regional board. The deployment side — the agentic-opex index (AEI), the agentic winners (AW40) and functional growth (HALO) — is the application layer that runs on it.

Last week the split was clean: the build-out side lagged on the semis’ rest while the deployment indices led — and that is the tell worth flagging. HALO and AW40 are the cohorts that lagged the build-out through the past months of the AI-hardware run; their turning up now is relative-laggard outperformance — a mean-reversion signal, leadership rotating into what had been left behind rather than a new theme. It is the single-stock version of the same broadening we are watching for across regions.

Two scenarios into the seasonally softer late-summer window:

• The broadening one — the world’s laggard regions and the small-cap basket begin to close the gap to Taiwan and Korea, and the rally stops being a two-country story. That is the healthy shape, and the one that would take the concentration risk off the table. It would be the regional echo of what the US cohorts are already doing: if the deployment laggards (HALO, AW40) can turn up against the build-out, the underperforming regions — China, India, Indonesia, the twenty that trail the benchmark — can turn up against the crowded Korea-and-Taiwan leaders. Watch the laggard regions the way we watch HALO and AW40 at home: the first sign of the concentration broadening.

• The narrowing one — the two leaders keep carrying the benchmark alone, the median region keeps lagging, and the index rises on ever-thinner participation. That is the classic late-cycle setup — a rising benchmark that is quietly one trade.

Either way, we expect the earnings season to be the referee. The risk we watch is not price but expectations: the AI-hardware names that are the concentration carry the highest bar of the cycle, and a small miss into a bar that high reprices fast — the same conclusion we reach in this week’s US edition, from the other direction.

The macro frame sits underneath all of it — whether the inflation impulse is cresting or entrenching decides how much multiple the concentrated winners get to keep, and firmer yields this week are a small vote for caution on the long-duration leaders.

The point is not to chase Taiwan and Korea but to watch the breadth: the asymmetry into next quarter lies in whether the world’s other twenty regions turn up to join them, or whether the benchmark keeps rising on two.

(1) This Week's Action: Global Stocks In Retreat Mode

The week spanning from Monday, November 18 to Friday, November 22, 2024, displayed two different sets of stock market behavior.

While global stock markets outside the US were flat on aggregate on the week, the US stock markets headed north. While crypto assets move significantly higher, the Mag-7 turned into the Drag-7.

Strongest Performers

• Bitcoin led with the highest YTD return of 134.4% and the most substantial weekly gain of 10.3%

• The Nasdaq shows the best YTD performance among traditional indices at 26.6%. but was the worst of the four leading stock market indices, adding only 1.7 %.

• Oil had a strong week with a 6.3% gain but remains slightly negative for the year.

Traditional Indices

• All major stock indices show positive weekly gains, ranging from 1.7% to 4.5%.

• The Russell 2000 outperformed other stock indices for the week with a 4.5% gai.n.

• The 10-year Treasury yield remained stable at 4.41% with minimal YTD. movement.

The Dow Jones Global Index rose about 1 % for the week. The index could not break above the downward-sloping upper consolidation channel trendline.

Price action still looks like a consolidation/correction inside a bull market to me and not like the start of a reversal and a significant top. The long-term bull channel is still intact.

The index has lost about 0.5 percent in the month. It has been down 2 percent in the last 30 days. It is up 14,07 % YTD and 20,49 % in a 52-week perspective.

While the odds still favor another rate cut in December in the US, continued US rate cuts in 2025 seem more unlikely. The ECB will likely cut rates more aggressively.

This should continue to strengthen the US Dollar and keep the downward pressure on the Euro.

Looking at the global stock markets, ex, the US, the situation worsens. The chart above shows the Vanguard FTSE All World Ex US ETF. The ETF failed to make an ATH in 2024.

It has declined much more than the Dow Jones Global Index, which is heavily skewed toward the US. The index is sitting on a significant support level. If it breaks, further declines may lie ahead.

(2) Global Stock Markets: Comprehensive Overview Of 36 Global Stock Markets

Argentina, Hungary, Taiwan, Germany (DAX), and India continue to be the five best-performing global stock markets outside the US, taking a one-year perspective.

The table below displays 36 global stock markets. Laggards are Russia, Mexico, South Korea, France, and the German and Dutch midcap indices.

Until two weeks ago, the Russian RTS Index was the only index in the red and the worst-performing one globally, taking a 1-year perspective. As of 22 November 2024, Mexico, South Korea, and France have turned negative, too.

Taking a 5-day view, 17 of the 36 stock markets covered traded up for the week. Argentina was the best performer, followed by South Korea. Russia cratered.

The Nifty Fifty Index in India was up 1.5 % on the week. The Equal Weight Nifty Fifty index is sitting on a critical support level. I expect the market to move higher from here and resume its uptrend.

The same applies to the Nifty Fifty Index itself. I see India as a net beneficiary of the Trump policy.

The Euro Stoxx 50 Index was unable to reach above the consolidation trendline. It sits on the lower bull trend line, which has been developing since the start of the bull in late 2022.

A break below the trendline may indicate that a temporary end of the European bull market is ahead.

The same applies to the MSCI Eurozone ETF. It failed to make an ATH. The ETF has already broken below that bull trend line.

The same also applies to the German MDAX index. A move toward the 26000 to 25000 level seems likely.

The SDAX is negative YTD now. 13300 is a critical support level. A break below the level seems likely to me. The downtrend is firmly intact.

The ASEAN stock markets have moved in the opposite direction to the European markets recently. I expect this to continue. I also see the ASEAN countries as net beneficiaries of the Trump policy shift.

Various ASEAN indices hit the upper trend line and consolidated in the past weeks. The consolidation should be in its final stage or may have ended already. I expect the bull market to resume shortly/or have resumed already.

In contrast to the various ASEAN countries, Japan has trended down since the summer of 2024. I doubt there will be another attempt to reach the 42000 level on the Nikkei index soon.

Chart-wise, the UK stock market looks better to me now. The long-term bullish trend is still intact.

We may see a year-end rally as the consolidation/correction looks relatively complete.

(3) Crazy Crypto

Bitcoin, Ether, and Solana have risen sharply since the Trump election victory. I believe that in the short-term they are due for a pause.

(1) Bitcoin

Bitcoin may have completed five waves up. A move above 100.000 USD may be the short-term top.

I do not see the top of the fifth wave as the top of the Bitcoin bull market, as I expect an extended impulse wave with nine legs to unfold.

I sold all my Microstrategy positions above 500 USD. Options on the IBIT BItcoin fund are a better way to embark on a leveraged Bitcoin trade, in my opinion. I only trade selling options - selling puts to play a move up and selling cally to play a move down.

Ether is still 700 points below the spring 2024 peak. I expect some catch-up to occur. But Ether looks vulnerable compared with Solana.

Solana moved past the spring 2024 highs and reached above the old ATH. I expect Solana to move close to the 300 USD level soon.

The Coin 50 index is close to its ATH. When Bitcoin consolidates, several altcoins should begin to move up considerably.

I am currently monitoring which altcoins may be suitable for a risk-on investment.

(4) The ETF Portfolio: Continued Rebalancing

From now on, I will detail the performance of the four investor portfolios in a weekly post in the Daily Brief section of the newsletter.

This will soon entail real-time trading signals. The next update will be on Monday, November 25.

The ETF portfolio developed nicely during the week. I made three transactions.

I added to the Solana position. I rebought the INQQ Internet India ETF and I bought an initial position in the VanEck Sustainable Future of Food UCITS - a beneficiary of the Trump MAHA policy.

The two Indian ETFs and the Roundhill Weight Loss ETF are the biggest losers. The Bitcoin ETF has been the best performer.

Selling the Gold Miners ETF and replacing it with a Solana ETP proved to be correct. The S&P Capital markets ETF, a recent buy, developed nicely. The Russel Midcap Pure Growth ETF is up more than 15 percent since I bought it.

(5) This Week's ETF Spotlight: VanEck Sustainable Future of Food UCITS

The VanEck Sustainable Future of Food UCITS ETF focuses on companies pioneering sustainable food solutions.

The VanEck Sustainable Future of Food UCITS ETF tracks the MVIS Global Future of Food ESG Index. The MVIS Global Future of Food ESG Index provides access to companies worldwide engaged in developing and producing sustainable food.

The included securities are filtered based on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) criteria.

(1) This Week's Action: Global Stocks In Retreat Mode

The week spanning from Monday, October 28 to Friday, November 01, 2024, displayed severe cracks in the global bull market narrative. The week spanning from Monday, 04 November until Friday, 08 November, displayed stock markets in bifurcation mode and seemed to have healed most of those cracks.

This assessment may have been wrong as the global stock markets resumed their path down in the week spanning from Monday, 11 November until Friday, 15 November.

The Dow Jones Global Index has been in a consolidation mode since the end of September 2024. The long-term bull channel is still intact.

The index lost about 1.6 percent on the week. It has been down 2 percent in the last 30 days. It is up 12,75 % YTD and 20 % in a 52-week perspective.

I expected a break above the trendline to occur this week if the US CPI and PPI showed that inflation was still moderating, kicking off the traditional year-end rally, which may last until the end of January (typical seasonal pattern).

The break-out failed when Chair Powell indicated that the Fed was in no hurry to lower rates and when the inflation figures in the US revealed continued stickiness in the core inflation and super core inflation subsectors.

While the odds still favor another rate cut in December, continued US rate cuts in 2025 seem more unlikely. This strengthened the US Dollar and at least temporarily ended the rally in gold.

Looking at the global stock markets, ex, the US, the situation worsens. The chart above shows the Vanguard FTSE All World Ex US ETF. The ETF failed to make an ATH in 2024.

It has declined much more than the Dow Jones Global Index, which is heavily skewed toward the US. However, the long-term bull channel is still intact.

(2) Global Stock Markets: Comprehensive Overview Of 36 Global Stock Markets

Argentina, Taiwan, Hungary, Taiwan, Germany (DAX), Spain, and India continue to be the seven best-performing global stock markets outside the US, taking a one-year perspective.

The table below displays 36 global stock markets. Laggards are Russia, Mexico, South Korea, and the German and Dutch midcap indices.

Until last week, the Russian RTS Index was the only index in the red and the worst-performing one globally, taking a 1-year perspective. As of 15 November 2024, Mexico, South Korea, and the German MDAX have turned negative, too.

Taking a 5-day (the week after Trump's victory) view, only six of the 36 stock markets covered traded up for the week - Argentina, Norway, Hungary, Spain, Dutch AMX, and Austria.

Most of the biggest Asian stock markets performed miserably. Russia gave back part of the gains recorded in the week before.

The difference between the German DAX, MDAX, and SDAX is striking. The MDAX trades around 26,500, nearly 10,000 points below its 2021 peak. It is trading around the 2017/18 levels.

Using the DAX price index instead of the DAX performance index to compare the performance of the DAX with the major global stock markets, the stellar performance of the DAX companies becomes a bit more muted, too.

The index is 20 percent above the dot.com bubble peaks recorded over 20 years ago.

The DAX Performance Index is one of the best indices globally - the power of reinvesting dividends. Most major indices are price indices, however. So, using the DAX Performance Index for comparison leads to a distorted analysis.

The DAX Net Return Index deducts taxes from performance and is an accurate index for net returns.

The DAX Net Return Index, measured in USD, is best used internationally outside the Eurozone.

While the MDAX lags behind the DAX, the performance of the SDAX measuring small-cap stocks in Germany is even worse. At 5775 points, it is roughly 2,300 points below its 2021 peak.

The Russel 2000 has underperformed the SP 500 in the last few years, but compared with the SDAX, the Russel 2000 performance looks solid.

The dire state of the German economy can also be seen in the performance of the German TECDAX.

It was stellar from the bottom of the GFC until the Covid-19 peak. It has been a miserable performer since then. Trading at around 2,450, it is still more than 600 points below the Covid peak.

Times have changed, and the old German business model has stopped working. Charts and price action do not lie.

(3) Trump Sectors: Hidden Winners, Obvious Losers, And More

Based on this week's market reaction, the following market sectors may be net beneficiaries of the Trump election and have either sound or improving funnymentals and technicals.

3. The related digital asset industries with stocks such as Coinbase, MicroStrategy, crypto miners, and ETFs such as the ones detailed in the table below.

MAHA (make America healthy again) Stocks

1. Clean food stocks such as Sprouts Farmers Market and similar

2. Personalized genetic testing and diagnostics stocks such as Natera

3. Dietary Supplement Industry (GNC Holdings or Vitamin Shoppe)

4. Fitness and Wellness Services (Planet Fitness, Peloton Interactive

Government Efficiency Stocks

Companies specializing in streamlining processes, reducing bureaucracy, and enhancing efficiency through technology could benefit. For example:

• IT consulting firms like Accenture or Deloitte which help organizations optimize their operations.

• Software companies such as Salesforce, ServiceNow, or Oracle which provide tools for workflow automation and efficiency

Tax Beneficiaries

The sectors that pay the highest taxes in the US as a percentage of their economic activity or net worth are:

Manufacturing

• Manufacturing firms pay a significantly higher share of corporate income taxes relative to their net worth and receipts. According to the Urban Institute, manufacturing firms paid about 28% of total corporate income taxes after credits despite accounting for only 15.1% of net worth and 29.4% of business receipts.

Wholesale and Retail Trade

• Wholesale and retail trade companies also pay a high share of taxes. They accounted for about 15.7% of corporate income taxes after credits, which is higher than their share of net worth (4.8%) but relatively in line with their share of business receipts (30.2%)

Finance and Insurance

• While finance and insurance companies have a large share of net worth (57.3%), they pay a relatively lower share of taxes (19.4%) compared to their economic size. However, this sector still contributes significantly to corporate tax revenue.

Key Statistics

• Manufacturing: 28.0% of corporate taxes, 15.1% of net worth, 29.4% of business receipts

• Wholesale and Retail Trade: 15.7% of corporate taxes, 4.8% of net worth, 30.2% of business receipts

• Finance and Insurance: 19.4% of corporate taxes, 57.3% of net worth, 8.5% of business receipts

Cyclical US Industrial Reflation Stocks

Under a second Trump administration, several sectors and stocks could benefit from the proposed policy changes, particularly those related to cyclical US industrial reflation.

Energy and Natural Resources

• Trump's policies favoring domestic energy production, such as rolling back environmental regulations and expanding drilling in the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska, would benefit energy companies.

  • Oilfield services companies: Haliburton, Schlumberger, and other oilfield services providers would likely see increased activity and profits.

  • Natural gas companies: Companies like EQT and CNX Resources could benefit from expanded drilling and pipeline projects

Manufacturing and Industrial Sector

• The proposed reduction in corporate tax rates to 15% for companies producing goods domestically, along with enhanced tax credits and subsidies, would incentivize manufacturing growth.

  • Automotive manufacturers: Companies like General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis could benefit from reduced taxes and potential tariffs on imported vehicles, although they might face challenges from tariffs on components sourced from Mexico

  • Industrial equipment manufacturers: Companies such as Caterpillar and Deere & Company could see increased demand and profitability due to lower taxes and deregulation

• Banks and financial institutions are expected to benefit from Trump's policies, including higher interest rates and deregulation.

  • Bank stocks: Companies like JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo could see improved performance due to higher interest rates and reduced regulatory burdens

Defense and Aerospace

• Trump's support for increased defense spending and a more robust military would benefit defense contractors.

  • Companies like Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and Northrop Grumman could see increased contracts and profitability.

Infrastructure and Construction

• The anticipated boost in domestic manufacturing and infrastructure projects could benefit construction and related services companies.

  • Companies like Fluor Corporation, Jacobs Engineering Group, and Martin Marietta Materials could see increased activity and profits from infrastructure projects.

Cyclical Stocks

(2) Not Sure, Maybe, Neutral, Let’s See

1. Small Cap US Stocks in General: Only if interest rates do not rise too much

2. Taiwan Stocks: The markets anticipate that Taiwan may benefit from the Chinese stimuli. The AI-related and semiconductor-based bull market is in full swing and will continue in 2025 and 2026.

3. Russian Stocks: The markets seem to anticipate a Ukraine-Russia deal brokered by the Trump administration, but who knows?

(3) The Bad

1. European stocks: Trump does not care about Europe. Tariffs will hurt the European exporters, and the Eurozone faces structural problems. Germany is a nightmare on its own. Europe lacks an attractive tech sector in which to invest.

2. Rate-sensitive emerging markets: If bond vigilantes start to threaten the US credit markets and long-term rates go up beyond 4.5 % (and move close to 5 %), this will hurt some emerging countries with debt tied to the US Dollar and US interest rates.

3. Alternative energy (solar, wind, etc.): The losers from the drill baby drill approach

4. Chinese exporters and internationally oriented companies, incl. some Internet: Unless there is a deal (brokered by Elon Musk?), I see these companies as big losers.

(4) The Ugly

Japan

Japan is the only developed market economy with rising interest rates and a monetary policy that is becoming more restrictive. This usually does not bode well for equities.

The stock market may have completed nine waves up and may be in a more significant corrective phase.

United Kingdom

The UK stock market looks toppy to me. It is another European crisis economy.

Last week, the market broke below a vital support line.

I do not see a lot of attractive stock market sectors in the UK.

(4) The ETF Portfolio: Continued Rebalancing

From now on, I will detail the performance of the four investor portfolios in a weekly post in the Daily Brief section of the newsletter.

This will soon entail real-time trading signals. The next update will be on Sunday, November 17.

The ETF portfolio lost value during the week, which is in line with the performance of the key regions to which it has been exposed.

The two Indian ETFs and the Roundhill Weight Loss ETF are the biggest losers. The Bitcoin ETF has been the best performer.

I sold the Gold Miners ETF and replaced the “hedge position” with a Solana ETP.

ETFs to invest in different sectors of the German stock market entail:

(1) GX DAX Germany ETF (DAX)

The Global X DAX Germany ETF seeks to provide investment results that correspond generally to the price and yield performance, before fees and expenses, of the DAX Index.

(2) Germany Ishares MSCI ETF (EWG)

The iShares MSCI Germany ETF seeks to track the investment results of an index composed of German equities. The ETF seeks investment results that correspond generally to the price and yield performance of the MSCI Germany Index.

(3) Germany Franklin FTSE ETF (FLGR)

The Franklin FTSE Germany ETF seeks to provide investment results that closely correspond, before fees and expenses, to the performance of the FTSE Germany Capped Index. FTSE Germany Capped Index is a market-capitalization weighted index representing the performance of large and mid-capitalization German stocks.

(4) Germany Alphadex Fund FT (FGM)

The Fund's objective is to seek investment results that generally correspond to the price and yield of an equity index called the NASDAQ AlphaDEX Germany Index before the Fund's fees and expenses.

(1) This Week's Action: Global Stocks In Bifurcation Mode

The week spanning from Monday, October 28 to Friday, November 01, 2024, displayed severe cracks in the global bull market narrative. The week spanning from Monday, 04 November until Friday, 08 November, displayed stock markets in bifurcation mode and healed most of those cracks.

Three groups of markets could be identified - the good, the bad, and the ugly. Group Good stock markets are beneficiaries of the Trump victory. Group Bad stock markets identified themselves as losers. Group Ugly stock markets were in bad shape before the US election, which did not change after the election result.

The Dow Jones Global Index moved north in the past week - from the 4900 level to 5000 (see above chart, top left).

It broke the very short-term downward channel to the upside (see above chart, top right). It found resistance at the downward-sloping consolidation trendline, which formed in September 2024 and provided resistance to the rise of the index in late October (see above chart, bottom left).

I expect a break above the trendline to occur next week if the US CPI and PPI show that inflation is still moderating (see above chart, bottom left).

This may lead to the traditional year-end rally, which may last until the end of January (typical seasonal pattern).

The index looks like there will be a further extension inside an already extended wave 3 before a more significant consolidation wave 4 is shaping.

The price action since the end of September looks like a consolidation inside an ongoing bull market and not like a topping formation. The long-term bull market channel is fully intact.

(2) Global Stock Markets: Comprehensive Overview Of 36 Global Stock Markets

Argentina, Taiwan, Hungary, Germany (DAX), Spain, and India continue to be the six best-performing global stock markets outside the US, taking a one-year perspective.

The table below displays 36 global stock markets. Laggards are France, Mexico, South Korea, and the German MDAX.

The only index in the red, the worst-performing index globally, taking a 1-year perspective, continues to be the Russian RTS Index.

Taking a 5-day (Trump week) view, the picture changes considerably. Various Chinese stock markets have been the top performers. The Russian stock market also greeted the Trump victory with joy, as did Taiwan stocks.

Laggards have been European stocks as well as those in Indonesia and India. The failure of the ruling coalition distorted price action in Germany.

Inside China, stocks benefiting from more domestic stimulus have been top performers. I expect the second leg of the China bull to manifest now, led by domestically oriented stocks.

The Russian RTS index has been in a multi-year bear market. This may end soon. The markets anticipate a Trump-brokered deal between Ukraine and Russia to occur relatively quickly.

The Indian Nifty Index has been in corrective territory since September 2024. I believe the index may have found a bottom and will start another bull leg soon.

It broke above the short-term downward trend line and found support at the 24000 level.

I will be adding to the current positions starting next week. The first level to buy is at 24000 on the Nifty-Fifty index, and the second and third are at 22800 and 22000.

The Euro Stoxx 50 Index moved lower by about three percent during the past week. It again found support at the critical 2-year trend line.

A heavy resistance zone has formed from 5000 to the spring 2024 tops.

The index may see a new 52-week high, but the move looks like the final move up (for quite some time).

Europe looks like the big loser of the Trump election.

(3) Trump Markets: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Based on the initial market reaction, the following global markets may be net beneficiaries of the Trump election and have either sound or improving funnymentals and technicals.

The Good

1. Domestic Chinese stocks: There will be additional government stimuli to offset the Trump tariffs.

2. Small Cap US stocks: Only if interest rates do not rise too much

3. Taiwan stocks: The markets anticipate that Taiwan may benefit from the Chinese stimuli. The AI-related and semiconductor-based bull market is in full swing and will continue in 2025 and 2026.

4. Russian stocks: The markets seem to anticipate a Ukraine-Russia deal brokered by the Trump administration.

5. Domestic energy stocks: Drill baby drill has been one of the Trump slogans.

The Bad

1. European stocks: Trump does not care about Europe. Tariffs will hurt the European exporters, and the Eurozone faces structural problems. Germany is a nightmare on its own. Europe lacks an attractive tech sector in which to invest.

2. Rate-sensitive emerging markets: If bond vigilantes start to threaten the US credit markets and long-term rates go up beyond 4.5 % (and move close to 5 %), this will hurt some emerging countries with debt tied to the US Dollar and US interest rates.

The Ugly

1. Japan

The stock market may have completed nine waves up and may be in a more significant corrective phase.

2. United Kingdom

The UK stock market looks toppy to me. It is another European crisis economy.

Last week, the market broke below a vital trendline, giving multi-year support.

The UK stock market initially moved up on the Trump election win, only to crater heavily and finish the week in the red.

I do not believe that Donald Trump has any ambition to maintain a special relationship between the UK and the US. The new Labor government turns out to be less friendly to the capital markets.

The economic ties with the EU are only improving slowly. The global trading ambitions of the UK after Brexit turn out to be mostly impossible to achieve.

I do not see a lot of attractive stock market sectors in the UK.

(4) The ETF Portfolio: Some Bigger Changes

The ETF portfolio has increased during the week, reaching an all-time high in mid-October.

The two Indian ETFs and the Roundhill Weight Loss ETF trade in the red. The Bitcoin ETF, the Russel MidCap Pure Growth ETF, and the Global X ETF have been the best performers.

I sold the Chinese Krane Internet ETF and added the S&P Capital Markets ETF SPDR (KCE) and the Russel 2000 Growth Ishares ETF (IWO), which I will detail in the next section.

(5) This Week's ETF Spotlight: Potential Trump Winner ETFs

Financial stocks, small/midcap stocks, and digital asset stocks may be Trump winners.

(1) S&P Capital Markets ETF SPDR (KCE)

The S&P Capital Markets ETF SPDR seeks to provide investment results that, before fees and expenses, correspond generally to the total return performance of the SP Capital Markets Select Industry Index.

The ETF is well diversified. Exposure to regional banks is minimal.

The table below shows a list of 20 ETFs in the segment. KCE is the nu, number two performing ETF.

(2) Russel 2000 Growth Ishares ETF (IWO)

The iShares Russell 2000 Growth ETF seeks to track the investment results of an index composed of small-capitalization U.S. equities that exhibit growth characteristics.

The Fund seeks investment returns that correspond to the performance of the Russell 2000 Growth Index.

The Index measures the performance of the small-capitalization growth sector of the U.S. equity market.

The fund has more than 1000 stocks in the portfolio and is well diversified.

(3) Vaneck Digital Transformation ETF (DAPP)

The VanEck Digital Transformation ETF (DAPP) is a nightmare for value investors.

It contains all the leading crypto miners, leveraged bitcoin proxies, and more that value investors think will soon go to zero. Digital asset enthusiasts like the industry's assortment of A-team and B-team stocks.

Donald Trump is rumored to be very Crypto-friendly. This would be one way to play the trend.

The ETF is only suited for speculative minds. I am not sure yet whether I will add it to the portfolio. I may increase the current Bitcoin ETF position instead.
